  • In this paper, we investigated the liquid crystal(LC) alignment and generation of pretilt angle by using photo-alignment techniques on two kinds of polyimide(PI) surface, It was found that the uniform alignment for nematic(N) LC is obtained in a cell with slanted UV light irradiation on PI surface without side chain. We successfully observed that the pretilt angle of NLC is generated about $3^{\circ}$ with an incident angle of 70 degree on the PI surface without side chain. It is considered that the pretilt angle generation in NLC is attributed to interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces.

  • Several characteristic results of physical and optical properties of paper treated by UV light were obtained in the previous papers(Kim et al. 1988). In this paper, folding endurance and brightness of paper prepared by spraying photostabilizer were examined in order to elucidate photodegradation phenomena, UV light absorber and radical scavenger were most effective in preventing of folding endurance decrease. These results may be indicated that depolymerization of cellulose and hemicellulose chains leading to degradation of paper mechanical properties mainly caused by radical reaction. Ineffective hydroperoxide decomposer may be explained because of auto-oxidation reactions before forming stable compound from hydroperoxide.

  • The sonochemical process has been applied as a treatment method to investigate its effect on the decomposition of humic substances (HS). The reaction kinetics and mechanisms in the process of sonochemical treatment for humic substances in wastewater have also been discussed. It was observed that the metal ions such Fe(II) and Mn(II) showed catalytic effects, while Al(III), Ca(II), and Mg(II) had inhibitory effects on the decomposition of humic substances in sonochemical reaction with hydrogen peroxide. Experimental results also showed factors such as hydrogen peroxide dose affected the formation of disinfection by-products. Two trihalomethanes, chloroform and dichlorobromomethane were formed as major disinfection by-products during chlorination. The depolymerization and the radical reaction of HS radicals appear to occur simultaneously. The final step of the reaction is the conversion of organic acids to carbon dioxide.

  • It is important to know the mechanism of cell membrane fluctuation because it can be readout for the nanomechanical interaction between cytoskeleton and plasma membrane. Traditional techniques, however, have drawbacks such as probe contact with the cell surface, complicate analysis, and limit spatial and temporal resolution. In this study, we developed a new system for non-contact measurement of nano-scale localized-cell surface dynamics using modified-scanning ion-conductance microscopy. With 2 nm resolution, we determined that endothelial cells have local membrane fluctuations of ~20 nm, actin depolymerization causes increase in fluctuation amplitude, and ATP depletion abolishes all membrane fluctuations.

  • Agar-agar extracted from red algae was used as a surface sizing material for paper after filtering, bleaching, and viscosity adjustment by oxidative depolymerization. Oxidized starches from corn and tapioca were compared to agar-based surface size in the respects of paper surface modification, strength improvement, and printability. Agar-based surface size showed high strength improvement and good printability as much as starch-based ones except film forming ability, which may be improved by adding additives, and demonstrated its great potential to be used as inexpensive and high quality surface size in future.

  • Lactide was produced from oligomeric PLA by back-biting reaction of the OH end groups. For optimization of the reaction conditions, the effects of temperature, pressure, PLA molecular weight, and catalyst type on the lactide synthesis were examined. The fraction of D,L-lactide decreased with increasing temperature. Among the various Sn-based catalysts, the D,L-lactide fraction was maximized when SnO was used. A higher yield with lower racemization was observed at lower pressure. The conversion of PLA was maximized at an oligomeric PLA molecular weight of ca. 1380. The yield of lactide increased but the fraction of D,L-lactide decreased with increasing molecular weight. The highest conversion with the lowest racemization degree was obtained at a catalyst concentration of 0.1 wt%. The lactide was more sensitive to racemization because of the entropic effect.

  • In the manufacture of precipitated sulfur calcium pentasulfide ($CaS_{5}$, train product) and calcium thiosulfate ($CaS_{2}O_{3}$, by-product) are decomposed simultaneously by hydrochloricacid into coarse (not being uniform) particle-size products. To improve this drawback, calcium thiosulfate was prepared directly without making calcium pentasulfide and obtained $S_{6}$ by the acid-decomposition. In the conversion of hexatomic sulfur to octatomic sulfur, the polymerization and the depolymerization were observed by using purification method. The conversion of $S_{6}$ to $S_{8}$ is proceeded by two steps. The first step reaction is affected by impurities (especially $SO_{2}$ and $H_{2}S$), Hexatomic sulfur is inert to triethylamine for the time being by purification, and thereafter a slow conversion to polymeric and then to octatomic sulfur occurs. Instead of calcium pentasulfide, the acid decomposition of calcium thiosulfate has several advantages; uniformity of particle-size of product, increase of yield, and simplicity of procedure.

  • A low-molecular-weight poly(lactic acid) was synthesized through the condensation reaction of L-lactic acid. The effects that the catalyst and temperature have on the reaction rate were studied to determine the optimum reaction conditions. The reaction kinetics increased with temperature up to $210^{\circ}C$, but no further increase was observed above this temperature. Among a few selective catalysts, sulfuric acid was the most effective because it maximized the polymerization reaction rate. Reduction of the pressure was another important factor that enhanced this reactions kinetics.

  • The carrageenan-degrading marine bacterium Vibrio sp. strain NJ-2 was isolated from rotten red algae, and κ-carrageenase with high activity was purified from the culture supernatant. The purified enzyme with molecular mass of 33 kDa showed the maximal activity of 937 U/mg at 40℃ and pH 8.0. It maintained 80% of total activity below 40℃ and between pH 6.0 and 10.0. The kinetics experiment showed the Km and Vmax values were 2.54 g/ml and 138.89 mmol/min/mg, respectively. The thin layer chromatography and ESI-MS analysis of hydrolysates indicated that the enzyme can endolytically depolymerize the κ-carrageenan into oligosaccharides with degrees of depolymerization of 2-8. Owing to its high activity, it could be a valuable tool to produce κ-carrageenan oligosaccharides with various biological activities.
