  • In recent years, significant advances in computers and communication technologies have made multimedia services feasible. As a result, various queueing models and cost models on architecture and data placement for multimedia server have been proposed. However, most of these models do not evaluate dependability of systems. In the design phase of a system, simulation is an important experimental means for performance and dependability analysis. Fault injection simulation has been used in evaluation of dependability metric. In this paper, we develop fault injection simulation model to analyze dependability of parallel video servers. In addition, we evaluate reliability and MTTF(Mean Time To Failure) of systems by using the simulator.

  • Nowadays worldwide leading companies try to establish more efficient and comprehensive management system for getting high quality, reliability and safety. In this paper, we investigate standards for quality management, dependability management and risk management. We also suggest an integrated and comprehensive system of quality(ISO/TS16949), dependability (IEC60300)and risk(JIS Q2001). The evaluation method on the performance of dependability management systems are developed and applied for the semiconductor equipment company.

  • The most important non-functional requirements for dependability of any Embedded Real-Time Safety Systems are safety, availability and reliability requirements. System architecture plays the primary role in achieving these requirements. Compliance with these non-functional requirements should be ensured early in the development cycle with appropriate considerations during architectural design. In this paper, we present an application of system architecture modeling for quantitative assessment of system dependability. We use probabilistic model checker (PRISM), for dependability analysis of the DTMC model derived from system architecture model. In general, the model checking techniques do not scale well for analyzing large systems, because of prohibitively large state space. It limits the use of model checking techniques in analyzing the systems of practical interest. We propose abstraction based compositional analysis methodology to circumvent this limitation. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology has been demonstrated using the case study involving the dependability analysis of safety system of a large Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR).

  • Dependability-critical systems, such as digital instrumentation and control systems in nuclear power plants, necessitate engineering techniques and tools to provide assurances of their safety and reliability. Determining system reliability at the architectural design phase is important since it may guide design decisions and provide crucial information for trade-off analysis and estimating system cost. Despite this, reliability and system engineering remain separate disciplines and engineering processes by which the dependability analysis results may not represent the designed system. In this article we provide an overview and application of our approach to build architecture-based, dynamic system models for dependability-critical systems and then automatically generate dynamic fault trees (DFT) for comprehensive, tool-supported reliability analysis. Specifically, we use the Architectural Analysis and Design Language (AADL) to model the structural, behavioral and failure aspects of the system in a composite architecture model. From the AADL model, we seek to derive the DFT(s) and use Galileo's automated reliability analyses to estimate system reliability. This approach alleviates the dependability engineering - systems engineering knowledge expertise gap, integrates the dependability and system engineering design and development processes and enables a more formal, automated and consistent DFT construction. We illustrate this work using an example based on a dynamic digital feed-water control system for a nuclear reactor.

  • We consider some dependability management systems(IEC300, NASA AHB5300.1 and DIN VDE 0801) with reference on IEC300. Part I of IEC300(IEC300-1) covers the essential features of a comprehensive dependability programme for the planning, organization, direction, and control of resources to produce products which will be reliable and maintainable. We consider the contents of IEC300-1; scope, normative references, definitions, management responsibilities, product or project independent programme elements and project specific programme elements.

  • The paper reviews Cronbaha's coefficient to measure a single source of error. On the contrary to classical measurement theory, the generalizability study can be used in the social survey design to calculate Generalizability Index (GI) and Dependability Index (DI) for measuring multiple sources of errors of behavior evaluation. The study proposes application guidelines to implement R:($A{\times}B$) mixed models that are composed of random factor and fixed factor.

  • Environmental factors for automotive consist of temperature, humidity, vibration(sine & random), gas, an electrical load and so on. These environmental factors are impressed in a automotive. Dependability is essential requirement in many electronic parts. Among components of automotive, the connector connecting electrical signals is one of the most important parts. Automotive -connector is inspected according to each manufacturer's test standard in which dependability should be considered. This paper aims to verify that current test standard is suitable for dependability, and present an inductive life test for automotive connector based on the field data in use-condition.

  • As a general rule for evaluating dependability of a system, reliability is commonly considered which barely rays attention to the system behavior, however the estimation is based on the assumption of a fault-frost system, which may be impracticable and inaccurate especially for complicated system. This paper introduces a security and dependability integrated approach to analyze the availability of a fault-active system both from dependability and security points of view. Two fault modes involved are discussed about the impairment to the system reliance. The approach can be well applied to estimate and quantify the attribute of system robustness with the help of Markov chain process, which is good at solving status related problem. The comparison result between dual system and IEC61850-based almighty backup system is shown to sup-port the suggested approach.

  • Intrusion tolerant technology is the technology to guarantee the Quality of service for certain amount time from the attacks which cannot be defended by the previous information security technologies. It increases the availability and confidentiality of the system by minimizing the damage from the attacks. And the fundamental components of the intrusion tolerant technology are voting and GMP(Group Management Protocol). In this paper, we present a new scheme to analyze the voting dependability and corrupt member detection dependability, which is very critical in GMP. Based on this scheme, we can make a new security policy and the methodology of analyzing the dependability itself also can be applicable to the other field.

  • Corporations are faced with the key strategic task of adopting a comprehensive management system of a new paradigm in order to enhance their products' quality, safety, and reliability, as well as to minimize the cost of quality. The purpose of this paper is to present a methodology that can be used by corporations to ensure a product's reliability, safety, and maintainability, with minimal costs, by measuring dependability levels and conducting DEA analysis. The methodology will be a way for corporations to adopt an optimal dependability management system based on a quality management system of ISO 9001:2000 standards.
