Microwave Synthesis of Chiral N-Benzyl-2-methyl-2H-benzo[b][1,4]oxazin/thiazin-3(4H)-ones via Smiles Rearrangement and their Biological Evaluation

  • Optically active N-benzyl-2-methyl-2H-benzo[b][1,4]oxazin-3(4H)-ones and N-benzyl-2-methyl-2H-benzo[b][1,4]thiazin-3(4H)-ones with potential synthetic and pharmacological interest were prepared via Smiles rearrangement in conventional as well as microwave irradiation conditions in one-pot from inexpensive (S)-2-chloropropionic acid. Most of the compounds displayed good inhibition against Gram positive bacteria and fungi in the antibiotic test.

  • This study aims to present an improved model of the organizational structure for national university libraries in Korea. The results of this study are as follows : 1. A small scale library serving to a population of less than 15,000 should be organized with a staff of 50-60 persons, 3 departments and 10-13 sections (3 departments and 9-12 sections of central library + 1 section of branch library) 2. A medium scale library serving to 15,000-25,000 population should be organized with a staff of 80-120 persons, an associate librarian, 5-6 departments and 18-21 sections (4-5 departments and 15-18 sections of central library + 1 department and 3 sections of branch library) 3. A large scale library serving to a population of over 25,000 should be organized with a staff of 140-170 persons, an associate librarian, 7-8 departments and 25-28 sections (5-6 department and 20-21 sections of central library + 2 departments and 6 sections of branch libraries)

  • Primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection can manifest with a broad spectrum of neurological complications. There are only rare reports of Guillain-$Barr{\acute{e}}$ syndrome (GBS) supervening on meningitis in patients with primary EBV infection. Clear evidence of central nervous system infection makes it difficult for the clinicians to consider a diagnosis of GBS. We present a patient with GBS supervening on meningitis in primary EBV infection.

  • The rapid change in the university environment due to the decrease in the school-age population calls for enhancing the competitiveness of China-related departments. In this paper, the university's competitiveness and dropout rate were studied in combination with various factors such as geographical location of Chinese-related departments set up at national universities, convergence with other departments, competition rate for entrance exams, scholarships, and employment rate that have a comprehensive impact on student satisfaction. In particular, the dropout rate presented research results that could help universities strengthen their competitiveness in China-related departments, such as by differentiating customized academic strategies according to the atmosphere of elimination through multiple regression analysis and quantile analysis. We hope this thesis will be the basis for policymaking and judgment in China-related departments.

  • Trichuris trichiura, commonly referred to as a whipworm, has a worldwide distribution, particularly among countries with warm, humid climates. In Korea, trichuriasis was a highly prevalent soil-transmitted helminthiasis until the 1970s. However, the nationwide prevalence decreased to 0.02% in 2004 as a result of national control activities and improvement in the socioeconomic status of Koreans. Most infected individuals have no distinct symptoms, if lightly infected. The diagnosis is typically confirmed by detection of T. trichiura eggs on examination of a stool sample; few reports have described detection of the parasite during colonoscopy. Recently, we managed 4 patients with trichuriasis who were diagnosed by detection of the parasite on colonoscopy, and we reviewed the literature on the colonoscopic diagnosis of T. trichiura in Korea. We suggest that colonoscopy might be a useful diagnostic tool, especially when infected by only a few male worms with no eggs in the stool.

  • A 38-year-old man, who was diagnosed nasopharyngeal carcinoma (stage T4N2Mx) had rapidly growing lower neck mass (at level IV area) with local inflammation sign during concurrent chemoradiotherapy. After we performed Color Doppler sonography and fine needle aspiration biopsy of the neck mass, we differentiated neck soft tissue infection from tumor extension. Size of the mass decreased after antibiotics therapy. It was difficult to differentiate neck infection from tumor progression during treatment in naspharyngeal carcinoma.

  • Poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis (PSGN) is one of the most well-known and important infectious renal diseases resulting from a prior infection with group A ${\beta}$-hemolytic streptococcus. The typical clinical characteristics of the disease reflect acute onset with gross hematuria, edema, hypertension and moderate proteinuria after the antecedent streptococcal infection. In children, usually PSGN is healed spontaneously but if it combines with fast progressing glomerulonephritis, it would be developed to chronic renal failure. Therefore, it is important to make a fast diagnosis and treatment by simple tools to predict the course and the prognosis of disease. Sonography is a simple tool for diagnosis but there is no typical renal sonographic finding in PSGN, so it is difficult to predict the course and the prognosis of disease by sonographic findings. In comparison between two cases of renal sonographic findings in PSGN, a patient who showed more increased echogenicity in more extended area of renal sonography had the severe results of renal pathology, prolonged treatment period and low serum C3 level. Here, we report the different findings of renal sonography and pathology depending on the degree of severity between two patients. Thus, it is necessary to gather more information from further studies to make a consensus about the relationship between the renal sonography and the prognosis of disease in PSGN.

  • Fraley's syndrome is a disorder of vascular impression on the renal infundibulum which is associated with unexplained disabling flank pain, painless microscopic hematuria, and urinary tract infection. We experienced one case of Fraley's syndrome in a 12-year-old girl whose chief complaint was persistent microscopic hematuria. We report this case with a brief review of related literatures. Kinesin Superfamily KIF5 Proteins Bind to ${\beta}III$ Spectrin

  • The kinesin proteins (KIFs) make up a large superfamily of molecular motors that transport cargo such as vesicles, protein complexes, and organelles. KIF5 is a heterotetrameric motor that conveys vesicles and plays an important role in neuronal function. Here, we used the yeast two-hybrid system to identify the neuronal protein(s) that interacts with the tail region of KIF5 and found a specific interaction with ${\beta}III$ spectrin. The amino acid residues between 1394 and 1774 of ${\beta}III$ spectrin were required for the interaction with KIF5C. ${\beta}III$ spectrin also bound to the tail region of neuronal KIF5A and ubiquitous KIF5B but not to other kinesin family members in the yeast two-hybrid assay. In addition, these proteins showed specific interactions, confirmed by GST pull-down assay and co-immunoprecipitation. ${\beta}III$ spectrin interacted with GST-KIF5 fusion proteins, but not with GST alone. An antibody to ${\beta}III$ spectrin specifically co-immunoprecipitated KIF5s associated with ${\beta}III$ spectrin from mouse brain extracts. These results suggest that KTF5 motor proteins transport vesicles or organelles that are coated with ${\beta}III$ spectrin.
