  • In this paper, we propose a transformation based robust adaptation technique that uses the maximum mutual information(MMI) estimation for the objective function and the linear spectral transformation(LST) for adaptation. LST is an adaptation method that deals with environmental noises in the linear spectral domain, so that a small number of parameters can be used for fast adaptation. The proposed technique is called MMI-LST, and evaluated on TIMIT and FFMTIMIT corpora to show that it is advantageous when only a small amount of adaptation speech is used.

  • This paper deals with model reference adaptive system (MRAS) speed estimators based on a secondary flux for linear induction motors (LIMs). The operation of these estimators significantly depends on an adaptation mechanism. Fixed-gain PI controller is the most common adaptation mechanism that may fail to estimate the speed correctly in different conditions, such as variation in machine parameters and noisy environment. Two adaptation mechanisms are proposed to improve LIM drive system performance, particularly at very low speed. The first adaptation mechanism is based on fuzzy theory, and the second is obtained from an LIM mechanical model. Compared with a conventional PI controller, the proposed adaptation mechanisms have low sensitivity to both variations of machine parameters and noise. The optimum parameters of adaptation mechanisms are tuned using an offline method through chaotic optimization algorithm (COA) because no design criterion is given to provide these values. The efficiency of MRAS speed estimator is validated by both numerical simulation and real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) implementations. Results indicate that the proposed adaptation mechanisms improve performance of MRAS speed estimator.

  • This study was designed to investigate the feasibility of utilizing an adaptation for selective elicitation of tactile sensations by means of transcutaneous electrical stimulation. We conducted the first experiment to investigate how the stimulation frequency affected the adaptation. Twenty healthy subjects participated in the second experiment to confirm our proposal that the perception intensity of the low-frequency vibration can be enhanced after a high-frequency adaptation, and vice versa. It was found that (1) a low-frequency stimulation did not adapt the nerve afferents responsible for the high-frequency vibration, (2) a high-frequency stimulation affected the nerve afferents responsible for the low-frequency vibration, but adapted to the pressure sensation more intensely, and (3) more than 62% of the subjects reported a more clear selective sensation after the adaptation had lessened or depressed the unwanted sensation. The observations showed that adaptation of the nerve afferent could be utilized for selective elicitation of tactile sensations.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify effects of self-esteem and health status on adaptation of elderly residents in facilities. Methods: The sample consisted of 151 elderly residents. The data collected from January to April 2010 were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. Using instruments were self-esteem scale (SES) (Rosenberg, 1965), Korean health status measure for the elderly (KoHSME) (Shin et al, 2002), and nursing home adaptation scale (Lee, 2007). Results: The mean scores of self-esteem ($2.90{\pm}0.71$), health status ($2.15{\pm}0.53$) and adaptation ($2.98{\pm}0.44$) of elderly residents in facilities were above the average. Self-esteem was significantly varied according to religion, economic status and living expenses. Health status was significantly different according to age, disease and motivation of getting into the facilities. Adaptation was significantly different according to religion, satisfaction of facilities and decision maker of getting into the facilities. Significant correlations were found between self-esteem, health status and adaptation. Self-esteem and health status were influencing factors of adaptation (22.6%). Conclusion: These findings indicate that perceived self-esteem and health status may be requirements for promoting adaptation of elderly residents in facilities. These results could be utilized in the development of supportive programs for elderly adaptation.

  • This paper presents a method using Maximum-Likelihood Linear Regression (MLLR) adaptation to improve recognition performance of Limabeam algorithm for speech recognition using microphone array. From our investigation on Limabeam algorithm, we can see that the performance of filtering optimization depends strongly on the supporting optimal state sequence and this sequence is created by using Viterbi algorithm trained with HMM model. So we propose an approach using MLLR adaptation for the recognition of speech uttered in a new environment to obtain better optimal state sequence that support for the filtering parameters' optimal step. Experimental results show that the system embedded with MLLR adaptation presents the word correct recognition rate 2% higher than that of original calibrate Limabeam and also present 7% higher than that of Delay and Sum algorithm. The best recognition accuracy of 89.4% is obtained when we use 4 microphones with 5 utterances for adaptation.
