Augmented Reality Technology-based Dental Radiography Simulator for Preclinical Training and Education on Dental Anatomy

  • It is important that students are provided opportunities to practice their skills in acquiring radiographic images. However, these opportunities are currently limited because of the risk of radiation exposure. To overcome this limitation, a new augmented reality-based radiography simulator was developed that enables students to practice radiographic techniques as part of self-directed learning without time and space constraints. Subsequently, cross-sectional images of a manikin phantom head obtained via computed tomography were reconstructed into a three-dimensional object. An image marker that could be recognized by a mobile device and could allow users to practice dental radiography techniques was devised. The three-dimensional object was augmented to the mobile device; consequently, among 106 stored dental radiographs on the device, a radiograph corresponding to specific imaging conditions was opened when users performed radiographic procedures. This technology could improve dental students' understanding of dental anatomy and contribute to improving their competency in acquiring dental radiographs.

  • 증강현실기술에 기반하여, 구강방사선촬영 실습에 활용할 수 있는 새로운 임상시뮬레이터를 개발하였고, 이에 대한 효과를 검증하였다. 이 시뮬레이터를 사용한 실험집단과 기존의 텍스트 형식 교재를 사용한 통제집단으로 구분하여, 국내 치위생학과 학생 217명에 대해 설문조사 및 통계분석을 시행하였다. 증강현실형 시뮬레이터를 사용한 실험집단에서 자아효능감, 학습흥미도, 학습몰입도, 실습만족도가 높게 나타났다. 이를 통해, 증강현실형 치과방사선촬영 시뮬레이터가 구강방사선촬영 실습에 효과적인 학습매체로 활용할 수 있으며, 학습자의 임상실무역량 강화에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

  • 치과병원에서 임상가가 시행하는 임상술기는 환자들의 위험요소를 제거하는데 중요한 요소이다. 대학에서 많은 임상술기 교육이 이루어지고 있지만, 실습실과 기자재의 특수성으로 인한 제약 때문에 반복적인 연습에 한계가 있다. 특히, 치과방사선 촬영은 다양한 구내 촬영법이 존재한다. 이에 대한 숙달은 정확한 방사선 사진 획득에 중요한 요소이기 때문에, 임상전단계에서의 반복 연습은 매우 중요하다. 그러나 최근 원자력법 개정으로 인체의 방사선 피폭량에 제한이 있기 때문에, 반복적인 실습에 어려움이 있어, 임상역량이 약화되고 있다. 이러한 한계점을 극복하기 위해서, 증강현실 기술을 활용하여 시간과 공간의 제약을 받지 않으며, 촬영법에 대한 반복 연습이 가능하고, 자기주도식 학습이 가능한 구내방사선 촬영 임상시뮬레이터를 개발하였다. 이를 통해, 치과위생사의 구내 방사선 촬영 기술을 숙달하고 임상실무역량을 향상하는데 기여하고자 한다.

Evaluation of alveolar crest bone loss via premolar bitewing radiographs: presentation of a new method

  • Purpose: This study aimed to assess the interdental bone level in premolar bitewing radiographs while retracting the cheeks. Methods: Seventy-two horizontal bone defects were created on dried mandibles and maxillae. The distance from the bone level to the cement-enamel junction of premolars was detected by a modified digital caliper (considered the gold standard). The reliability of all radiographs was assessed by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and the validity was compared to the gold standard using the analysis of variance test. P-values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: This study showed that the reliability of radiographs without a cheek simulator and with 0.16 second exposure time was significantly higher than that of the two other groups (ICC=0.96 compared to 0.93 and 0.88, respectively). The results from the radiographs without a cheek simulator and with 0.16 second exposure time were more similar to the gold standard measures than those of the two other groups, although the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Retracting the buccal soft tissue plays an important role in increasing the accuracy of radiographs in detecting the interdental alveolar bone level and produces more accurate results than increasing the exposure time, although it does not have a significant role in reliability of results.
