The relationship between stress perception and oral health status (스트레스 지각과 구강건강의 관련성)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the factors related to stress perception. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 109 people living in Gimpo city from January 16 to April 15, 2013. The data were analyzed using SPSS window ver. 19.0(IBM CO., Armonk, NY, USA) for t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple linear regression analysis. Results : Men and group of 59 years old tended to have higher stress perception than women and those who over 60 years old, but the results were not statistically significant. Stress perception was higher among the group with systemic dryness and oral dryness(each${\geq}1$) and the group reporting high difficulty in daily living due to oral problem(${\geq}2$)(p<0.05). Especially, the factor that was most correlated to stress perception was systemic dryness(${\beta}$=0.347) followed by problem of daily living for oral problem(${\beta}$=0.278, p<0.01). Conclusions : Systemic dryness and oral problem can increase the level of stress perception, mouth dryness and oral problems are a part of stress responses. Therefore, the regular health checkup must be done and early treatment to reduce stress perception as well as negative aspects caused by stress. It will contribute to the enhancement of public health and life of quality.

Differences in Career Decision Self-Efficacy according to the Motives for Major Selection among Dental Hygiene Students

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to confirm the major motivation for and self-efficacy of career decisions among dental hygiene students and to analyze differences in career decision self-efficacy according to the major motivation. Methods: An online survey was conducted among 194 dental hygiene students. To investigate career decision self-efficacy, 18 questions were posed, including 5 questions on future planning, 4 questions on self-evaluation, 4 questions on job information collection, 3 questions on goal setting, and 2 questions on problem solving. The survey was conducted using a 5-point scale. Results: The motives for choosing a major were a high employment rate (68.6%), a desire to become a professional (36.1%), according to aptitude (27.8%), recommendations by others (26.3%), and according to grades (12.9%). The career decision self-efficacy of the study participants was in the order of self-evaluation factors (3.75 points), problem solving factors a (3.62 points), job information collection factors (3.59 points), future planning factors (3.46 points), goal setting factors (3.44 points) score was high. The career decision self-efficacy scores were higher when the major motivation was "because I want to become a professional" and "because I think I have an aptitude for it." Conclusion: It is necessary to give students who wish to major in dental hygiene an opportunity to consider whether they have an aptitude for it by providing information on not only major subjects but also the duties and roles of dental hygienists. In addition, it is necessary to develop a career education program to help dental hygiene students set their career goals.

The Convergence relation of Critical Thinking Disposition, Problem-Solving Ability and College Life Adaptation of Dental Laboratory Technology Students (치기공과 학생의 비판적 사고성향, 문제해결능력, 대학생활 적응의 융합적 관련성)

  • This study was conducted to identify the convergence relation of critical thinking disposition, problem-solving ability and college life adaptation and to find out the factors that influence college life adaptation. The survey was collected on 172 2nd and 3rd grade students majoring in dental laboratory technology from three-year colleges in Chungbuk and Jeonbuk. The analysis results showed that the critical thinking disposition was 3.50, problem-solving ability of the study subjects was 3.55 and college life adaptation was 3.27. The most influential factor in college life adaptation was critical thinking disposition followed by major satisfaction and college satisfaction in that order. In order to improve the level of college life adaptation of dental laboratory technology students, it is necessary to reform the educational environment and develop a variety of educational program to increase critical thinking, major satisfaction and college satisfaction.

  • Periodic oral examination must be accomplished in elementary and high schools in every year, but many problemes happened to be checked out. So, the author questionnaired problem to school nurses about the periodic oral examination. The obtained results were as follows: 1. It took about 24 seconds per child to examine oral status. 2. It was revealed that school nurses could not be able to accomplish reporting about the children's oral health status. 3. generally speaking, school nurses had affirmative views about the periodic oral examination. 4. It was needed that incremental dental care system was operated for school children. 5. It was concluded that school dental health with man-power problem was dealt on the government level.

Analysis of Difference in Importance and Need for Basic Core Competence of Clinical Dental Hygienists

  • Background: The objective of this study is to investigate the needs and importance of basic core competencies required for future society by dental hygienists' viewpoints who are working in the clinical practices and to provide the fundamental data to develop the educational programs based on the competencies in the 21st century so as to enhance their working capability. Methods: A total of 38 questionnaires were used in this study, 3 questionnaires on the general characteristics (age, service years, main job functions) and those in 11 sub-factors of basic core competencies including 4 questionnaires on creativity, 3 on collaboration, 3 on communication, 3 on interpersonal relationship, 3 on problem-solving, 4 on resource control, 4 on self-control and development, 2 on vocational ethics, 3 on knowledge information utilization, 3 on global mind, and 3 on emotional intelligence. Self-reported survey was conducted in the dental hygienists who were working in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province and a total of 195 data were analyzed. Results: Vocational ethics, communication, and collaboration showed the highest on both importance and needs with 4.49 points and 4.34; 4.41 and 4.28; and 4.39 and 4.22, respectively, while global mind showed the lowest with 3.51 and 3.59. Upon Importance-Performance Analysis, 7 items were defined to require maintain the status including vocational ethics, communication, collaboration, interpersonal relationship, self-control, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving while 4 items with lower priority were resource control and development, knowledge information utilization, creativity, and global mind. Conclusion: Based on this study results that suggested the basic core competencies of dental hygienists in alignment with their jobs in the future society, competitive dental hygienists should be developed with the educational programs applied with these competencies.

Dental hygienist's job recognition and vocational competency reinforcement (치과위생사 직업인식과 직무역량 강화방안)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the qualities and problems to be solved to strengthen the vocational competency of dental hygienists and to identify the work to be institutionally established. Methods: From April 1 to May 30, 2019, a total of 325 people participated (152 registered dental hygienists: RDH, 173 students of dental hygiene: SDH) in this study. The survey items were as follows: "job awareness" (6 items), "problem to be solved to strengthen vocational competency" (5 items), "qualities to be equipped to strengthen"competency" (9 items), and "practical work to be institutionally established" (4 items). Results: RDH and SDH had the highest perception of professionalism (3.68, 3.99 points), and low remuneration against work (4.21, 4.18 points) was perceived as the most important problem to be solved. The qualities for competency reinforcement showed the highest results in expertise knowledge (4.68, 4.64 points) and vocation for job (3.76, 4.09 points). Practical work to be established institutionally appeared as follows: X-ray film reading, dental hygiene diagnosis, periodontal pocket measurement, and periodontal pockets (<6 mm) treatment. Conclusions: This study is expected to be actively used to strengthen the vocational competency among dental hygienists, construct work autonomy, and rationalize and legalize practical work.

Dental accidents and malpractice disputes survey (치과의사의 설문을 통해 본 치과의료사고 및 분쟁)

  • The dental accidents and disputes among Korean dentists have been on the increase with time. The main purpose of this study is to figure out the actual status of the dental accidents and malpractice disputes based on a questionnaire survey. The findings showed that 64.8% of respondents had been experienced the dental accidents, and 52.9% of respondents had been locked into the disputes. Within 5 years from the start of dental practice, the nearly half of the dentists responded the experience of the dental accidents and disputes. The amount of compensation for dental accidents and disputes wereindentalimplant, prosthodontics, and oral surgery treatments in descending order. The highest incident type was wrong process/treatment/procedure problem in clinical process/procedure.

Behavior management for dental patients with special needs (행동조절을 통한 장애인 환자 치료)

  • Individuals with special needs include those with behavioral issues, developmental disorders, cognitive disorders, congenital or genetic disorders, or systemic disease. These conditions may place them at increased risk for oral diseases. Dental management of patients with special needs require in-depth understanding of the background of disability and available behavioral guidance theories. Therefore dental team members need more training in the theory and practice of behavior management principles, which might lead to a clinical experience that is more respectful of the dignity and independence of patients with special needs. The dental professional should be flexible to modify the behavior management approach according to the individual patients needs. Also a family/care-giver centered approach based on their preferences and concerns, the patient's challenging behaviors, and related medical problem can serve to improve the treatment planning and oral health management of dental patients with special needs. This article focuses on uncooperative behavior and behavior management, which help practicing dentists to understand their role in the care of patients with special needs.

Efficacy of dental local anesthetics: A review

  • The objective of this review was to investigate the efficacy of dental local anesthetics, as it is well known among clinicians that local anesthesia may be challenging in some circumstances. Therefore, the focus of this review was on the efficacy of the products used in dental local anesthesia. In a Pubmed database literature search conducted, a total of 8646 articles were found to be related to dental local anesthetics. After having applied the inclusion criteria (human research, performed in the last 10 years, written in English language, and focus on dental local anesthetics) and having assessed the quality of the papers, 30 were deemed eligible for inclusion in this review. The conclusion of this review is that none of the dental local anesthetic amides provide 100% anesthesia. The problem appears to be more pronounced when mandibular teeth are attempted to be anaesthetized and especially if there is irreversible pulpitis involved. The authors conclude that this finding suggest exploration of more efficient techniques to administer dental local anesthesia, especially in the mandible, to establish a 100% efficacy, is needed.

Effect of self-leadership on stress coping in dental hygiene students (일부 치위생과 학생들의 셀프리더십이 스트레스 대처방식에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : This study examined the stress-coping methods used by Dental Hygiene students according to their degree of self-leadership to provide basic data for students' self-leadership training programs. Methods : Dental Hygiene students in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do were surveyed to measure their self-leadership in six categories-self-expectation, rehearsal, goal-setting, self-compensation, self-criticism, and constructive thinking-sand, in four categories-sproblem-centered coping, social support coping, emotional coping, and wishful thinking coping-son a scale of 1 through 5. Results : The findings of the study were as follows: The overall average score of self-leadership was 3.34 and the scores for each subfactor were 3.82 for self-compensation, 3.57 for self-expectation, 3.44 for rehearsal, 3.42 for goal-setting, 3.30 for self-criticism, and 3.12 for constructive thinking. The overall average score of stress-coping was 3.29 out of 5 and the scores for active coping were 3.14 for problem-centered coping and 3.38 for social support coping and for passive coping were 3.69 for wishful thinking coping and 2.95 for emotional coping. Self-leadership showed significant difference in terms of satisfaction with major and motivation for application. The six sub-factors of self-leadership and problem-centered coping and wishful thinking coping, the sub-factors of stress-coping, had significant correlations. Self-compensation and constructive thinking were significant factors of self-leadership that affect stress-coping. Conclusions : Based on the above findings, it was found that Dental Hygiene students' self-leadership is related to the use of efficient stress-coping. Therefore, it would be necessary to develop and apply educational approaches to improve their self-leadership so they can efficiently cope with various stressors that they will face after finding jobs.
