Although many studies on the cytotoxicity of the dental cast base metal alloys and their components have been carried out, the results are rather conflicting because of the different type of cells used and the various experimental procedures taken. Recently a number of scientists have claimed that it would be preferable to focus on the use of cells from relevant specific location of the human bodies. Consequently, the primary cultured oral keratinocyte derived from oral mucous along with nickel chloride and several of widely used dental cast base metal alloys(two Ni-Cr alloys and one Co-Cr alloy)in domestic were selected for this study, from which 1) The amounts of released metal ions were determined using atomic absorption spectrometry, 2) The cytotoxicity of nickel chloride and dental cast base metal alloys was evaluated via MTT assay, and finally, 3) The amounts of released metal ions and the cytotoxicity of nickel chloride were correlated with the cytotoxicity of dental cast base metal alloys And, the results were summarized as follows; 1. Nickel ion from Ni-Cr alloys and Cobalt ion from Co-Cr alloys resulted in maximum releasing rate during first 2h hours, followed by a decrease in releasing rate with time. Chromium ion were found to be minimal in all alloys. 2. In cytotoxic test. with $40{\mu}M,\;80{\mu}M$ of nickel chloride, there were observed an increase in the relative cell number compared to control samples after 24 hours. With $160{\mu}M$, there was found to be no difference in the relative cell number with control, except that 48 hour showed a increase in relative cell number. With $320{\mu}M$, the relative cell number remained constant and decreased after 48 hours, and with $640{\mu}M$, a continuing decrease in relative cell number was observed throughout test period. 3 The sensitivity of primary cultured oral epithelium to nickel was lower compared to the cells used in other studies. 4. CB-80 Soft and Regalloy showed no cytotoxicity to primary cultured oral epithelium and New crown resulted in a slight cytotoxicity. In conclusion, it was shown that the primary cultured oral keratinocytes could be applied successfully as testing cells in cytotoxicity test. Futhermore, the dental cast base metal alloys used in this study were found to be biocompatible.
Purpose: Dental casting Co-Cr-Mo based alloys of five kinds of ingot type and two kinds of shot type were analyzed the melting processes with heating time of high frequency induction centrifugal casting machine using infrared thermal image analyzer. Methods: When Co-Cr-Mo based alloys were put about 30g/charge in the ceramic crucible of high frequency induction centrifugal casting machine and heat, Infrared thermal image analyzer and IR thermometer indicated these alloys in the crucible were set and operated. Results: The melting temperatures of alloys measuring infrared thermal image analyzer were deviated ${\pm}10^{\circ}C$ compared to those of manufacturing company. On the other hand, the melting time of alloys were differently appeared with the shape of alloys(ingot and shot type). Conclusion: The melting temperatures of dental Co-Cr-Mo based alloys were measured the degree of $1,360{\sim}1410^{\circ}C$ and the heating time with the alloys of ingot and shot type were deviated ${\pm}10sec$.
Research advances in dental implantology have led to the development of several different types of materials and it is anticipated that continued research will lead to advanced dental implant materials. Currently used pure titanium has relatively low hardness and strength which may limit its ability to resist functional loads as a dental implant. Ti-6Al-4V also has potential problems such as corrosion resistance. osseointegration properties and neurologic disorder due to aluminium and vanadium, known as highly toxic elements, contained in Ti-6Al-4V. Newly developed titanium based alloys(Ti-20Zr-3Nb-3Ta-0.2Pd-1In, Ti-20Zr-3Nb-3Ta-0.2Pd) which do not contain toxic metallic components were designed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) with alloy design techniques using Zr, Nb, Ta, Pd, and In which are known as non-toxic elements. Biocompatibility and osseointegration properties of these newly designed alloys were evaluated after implantation in rabbit femur for 3 months. The conclusions were as follows : 1. Mechanical properties of the new designed Ti based alloys(Ti-20Zr-3Nb-3Ta-0.2Pd-1In, Ti-20Zr-3Nb-3Ta-0.2Pd) demonstrated close hardness and tensile strength values to Ti-6Al-4V. 2. New desinged experimental alloys showed stable corrosion resistance similar to the pure Ti but better than Ti-6Al-4V. However, the corrosion rate was higher for the new alloys. 3. Cell culture test showed that the new alloys have similar cell response compared with pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V with no cell adverse reaction. 4. New designed alloys showed similar bone-metal contact ratio and osseointegration properties compared to pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V after 3 months implantation in rabbit femur. 5. Four different surface treatments of the metals did not show any statistical difference of the cell growth and bone-metal contact ratio.
Purpose. The aim of this study is to compare the hardness according to the conditions of metal alloys. Moreover, the correlation between the cast crown hardness before and after wear testing and the degree of wear for each dental alloy was assessed. Materials and Methods. Cast crowns of three metal alloys (Co-Cr, gold, and Ni-Cr alloys) opposing smooth-surface monolithic zirconia were used. The Vickers microhardness of the ingot (which did not undergo wear testing) and the cast crown before and after wear testing were measured for each alloy. Two-way ANOVA and Scheffé tests were used to compare the measured hardness values. Moreover, the Pearson correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the relationship between the surface hardness and the wear of the cast crown (α=.05). Results. There was no significant difference in the hardness before and after wear testing for the gold alloy (P>.05); however, the hardness of the worn surface of the cast crown increased compared to that of the cast crown before the wear tests of Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys (P<.05). Furthermore, there was no correlation between the wear and hardness of the cast crown before and after wear testing for all three metal alloys (P>.05). Conclusion. There was a significant difference in hardness between dental alloys under the same conditions. No correlation existed between the surface hardness of the cast crown before and after wear testing and the wear of the cast crown.

In order to investigate ion release and biocompatibility of Ti-6Al-4V dental alloy by electrochemical corrosion test and MTT assay, commercial Ti-6Al-4V alloy rod (99.99% Ti, USA, Co) were used in the study. The microstructure of the alloys was examined by optical microscopy (OM), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), MTT assay, and corrosion test. From the polarization curves, very low current densities were obtained for Ti-6Al-4V alloys, indicating a formation of stable passive layer.

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate alloys spectrophotometrically including yttrium of nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) alloys, which are used as substitutes for the regulation of beryllium and provide helpful improvements in Ni-Cr alloys. Methods: Four groups of specimens (ZN, ZY, SN and EM) were prepared for analysis. Color parameters were measured with a spectrophotometer, and color difference (∆E*) was calculated. The t-test and one-way analysis of variance test were used to determine significant difference, and the Tukey test was used to identify where the differences were. To measure the spectroscopic reflectivity, the spectroscopic reflectance was measured and converted into CIE L*, a*, b* color system. Results: The ∆E* value of each metal ceramic group after opaque firing of Ni-Cr alloy with and without yttrium was <2, and the total group color difference (∆E*) was below 1 in the dentin ceramic all experimental group. However, the a* and b* values of the metal ceramic groups were higher than that in the lithium disilicate all ceramic group, and the chroma was higher than the natural tooth. The brightness of all experimental groups was similar to that of the shade guide sample. Conclusion: Yttrium added to Ni-Cr alloys showed similar CIE L*, a*, b* values to Ni-Cr alloys that did not contain yttrium, indicating that yttrium had no effect on color in metallic ceramic systems.
Pure Ti as well as Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibit excellent properties for dental implant applications. However, for a better biocompatibility it seems important to avoid in the composition the presence of V due to the toxic effects of V ion release. Thus Al and V free and composed of non-toxic element such as Nb, Zr alloys as biomaterials have been developed. Especially, Zr contains to same family in periodic table as Ti. The addition of Zr to Ti alloy has an excellent mechanical properties, good corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. In this study, the electrochemical characteristics of Ti-Zr alloys for biomaterials have been investigated using by electrochemical methods. Methods: Ti-Zr(10, 20, 30 and 40 wt%) alloys were prepared by arc melting and homogenized for 24 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. Phase constitutions and microstructure of the specimens were characterized by XRD, OM and SEM. The corrosion properties of the specimens were examined through potentiodynamic test (potential range of -1500 ~ 2000 mV), potentiostatic test (const. potential of 300 mV) in artificial saliva solution by potentiostat (EG&G Co, PARSTAT 2273. USA).
Purpose: Dental casting #Gr I (Co-25Cr-5Mo-3Sn-1Mn-1Si), #Gr II (Co-25Cr-5Mo-5Cu-1Mn -1Si) and #Gr III (Co-25Cr-5Mo-3Sn-5Cu-1Mn-1Si) master alloys of granule type were manufactured the same as manufacturing processes for dental casting Ni-Cr and Co-Cr-Mo based alloys of ingot type. These alloys were analyzed melting processes with heating time of high frequency induction centrifugal casting machine using infrared thermal image analyzer. Methods: These alloys were manufactured such as; alloy design, the first master alloy manufatured using vacuum arc casting machine, melting metal setting in crucible, melting in VIM, pouring in the mold of bar type, cutting the gate and runner bar and polishing. These alloys were put about 30g/charge in the ceramic crucible of high frequency induction centrifugal casting machine and heat, Infrared thermal image analyzer indicated alloys in the crucible were set and operated. Results: The melting temperatures of these alloys measuring infrared thermal image analyzer were decreased in comparison with remanium$^{(R)}$ GM 800+, vera PDI$^{TM}$, Biosil$^{(R)}$ f, WISIL$^{(R)}$ M type V, Ticonium 2000 alloys of ingot type and vera PDS$^{TM}$(Aabadent, USA), Regalloy alloys of shot type. Conclusion: Co-Cr-Mo based alloy in addition to Sn(#Gr I alloy) were decreased the melting temperature with heating time of high frequency induction centrifugal casting machine using infrared thermal image analyzer.
The aim of this study was to compare wear resistance of resin denture teeth opposing various restorative materials. The wear resistance of conventional acrylic resin teeth(Trubyte Biotone) and three high-strength resin teeth(Bioform IPN, Endura, SR-Orthosit-PE) opposing different restorative materials(gold alloys, dental porcelain, composite resin) was compared. Wear tests were conducted with a sliding-induced wear testing apparatus which applied 100,000 strokes to the specimen in a mesio-distal direction under conditions of 100 stroke/min and constant loading of 1Kgf/tooth. Wear resistance of the resin denture teeth was evaluated by the following criteria : 1) wear depth, 2) weight loss, and 3) SEM observation. Results were as follows. 1. When opposed to gold alloys and composite resin, high-strength resin teeth showed superior wear resistance compared to acrylic resin teeth. But, in cases opposing dental porcelain, differences between the wear of the high-strength and acrylic resin teeth were not statistically significant (p<0.05). 2. When comparing wear resistance among high-strength resin teeth, opposing gold alloys, Endura was slightly more resistant and while in cases opposing dental porcelain, SR-Orthosit-PE was showed to be slightly resistant(p<0.05). 3. The wear of high-strength resin teeth was greater by 5 to 7 times when opposing porcelain and 2 to 3 times when opposing composite resin compared to gold alloys(p<0.05). 4. SEM observations of the wear surface showed that wear of resin teeth opposing gold alloys is a fatigue type of wear and wear of resin teeth opposing dental porcelain is fatigue and abrasion type of wear. Trubyte Biotone showed more severe fatigue type of wear than high-strength resin teeth. In conclusion, the use of dental porcelain should seriously be considered as restorative material in cases opposing resin denture teeth and improvement seems to be needed on resin teeth in the areas of wear resistance.
Purpose: The grindability of binary Ti-X%Zr(X=10,20,40) alloys in order to develop a Ti alloy with better machinability than unalloyed titanium has been evaluated. Methods: Experimental Ti-Zr alloys were made in an argon-arc melting furnace. Slabs of experimental alloys were ground using a SiC abrasive wheel on an electric handpiece at circumferential speeds(12000,18000,25000 or 30000rpm) by applying a force(200gr). Grinding rate was evaluated by measuring the amount of metal volume removed after grinding for 1 minute and the volume ratio of metal removed compared to the wheel material lost, which was calculated from the diameter loss (grinding ratio). Experimental datas were compared to those for cp Ti(commercially pure titanium) and Ti-6%Al-4%V alloy were used controls. Results: It was observed that the grindability of Ti-Zr alloys increased with an increase in the Zr concentration. More, they are higher than cp Ti, particularly the Ti-20%Zr alloy exhibited the highest grindability at all circumferential speeds. There was significant difference in the grinding rate and grinding ratio between Ti-20%Zr alloy and cp Ti at any speed(p<0.05). Conclusion: By alloying with Zr, the Ti exhibited better grindability at all circumferential speeds. the Ti-20%Zr alloy has a great potential for use as a dental machining alloy.
