Background: Dental caries in preschool children can cause early loss of teeth, reduced masticatory function, malocclusion, and speech disorders, making oral care for preschool children essential. However, because children have a poor ability to perform oral hygiene by themselves, educational tools that help establish correct oral health behaviors are required. This study evaluated the effect of toothbrushing application for kids on dental plaque removal and toothbrushing interest in preschool children. Methods: Seven 5-year-old children enrolled in a daycare center participated in the evaluation, and the same children participated in the experiment twice a week. The Pokémon Smile application (App) was used as an auxiliary application for tooth brushing, and the degree of dental plaque removal on the tooth surface was evaluated by quantitative light-induced fluorescence-digital imaging. After the experiment, children's toothbrushing preferences were investigated through interviews. Results: The levels of AREA R30 and AREA R70 measured after the children's toothbrushing as usual decreased compared to those before toothbrushing; however, the change was not significant. The levels of AREA R30 and AREA R70 measured after using the Pokémon Smile App were significantly reduced compared to those before toothbrushing. Children's interest in brushing their teeth increased by 28.59% after using the Pokémon Smile App. Conclusion: The toothbrushing application for kids effectively removes dental plaque by helping preschool children brush their teeth. It also increased preschool children's interest in tooth brushing. Therefore, an oral health education application would be useful for children who need to develop correct oral care methods and habits.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the microbial composition of 3 types of oral samples through 16S metagenomic sequencing to determine how to resolve some sampling issues that occur during the collection of sub-gingival plaque samples. Methods: In total, 20 subjects were recruited. In both the healthy and periodontitis groups, samples of saliva and supra-gingival plaque were collected. Additionally, in the periodontitis group, sub-gingival plaque samples were collected from the deepest periodontal pocket. After DNA extraction from each sample, polymerase chain reaction amplification was performed on the V3-V4 hypervariable region on the 16S rRNA gene, followed by metagenomic sequencing and a bioinformatics analysis. Results: When comparing the healthy and periodontitis groups in terms of alpha-diversity, the saliva samples demonstrated much more substantial differences in bacterial diversity than the supra-gingival plaque samples. Moreover, in a comparison between the samples in the case group, the diversity score of the saliva samples was higher than that of the supra-gingival plaque samples, and it was similar to that of the sub-gingival plaque samples. In the beta-diversity analysis, the sub-gingival plaque samples exhibited a clustering pattern similar to that of the periodontitis group. Bacterial relative abundance analysis at the species level indicated lower relative frequencies of bacteria in the healthy group than in the periodontitis group. A statistically significant difference in frequency was observed in the saliva samples for specific pathogenic species (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Prevotella intermedia). The saliva samples exhibited a similar relative richness of bacterial communities to that of sub-gingival plaque samples. Conclusions: In this 16S oral microbiome study, we confirmed that saliva samples had a microbial composition that was more similar to that of sub-gingival plaque samples than to that of supra-gingival plaque samples within the periodontitis group.
Objectives : Since the program about sodium lauryl sulfate that might cause oral dryness and taste change including oral tissue allergy was on the air, the ingredients of D.I.Y dentifrices without sodium lauryl sulfate have been sold in online shopping mall and ordinary people can make the dentifrices easily. But there have not been any reports about the effect of dental plaque removal and preference about D.I.Y dentifrices. Therefore, this study was designed as a pilot study which aimed to investigate the effect of dental plaque removal and prefernece about D.I.Y dentifrices. Methods : 6 subjects were collected to test the effect of dental plaque removal with D.I.Y dentifrices with written consent. They didn't brushed the teeth during 12 hours until the check-up time on the next day. The O'leary index was calculated in baseline, 1 minute, 2 minute, 3 minute after brusing with D.I.Y dentifrices and market dentifrices. The preference about D.I.Y dentifrices through self-administered questionnaire was surveyed in 51 subjects after using D.I.Y dentifrices. Results : 1. The market dentifrices could remove larger amount of dental plaque than D.I.Y dentifrices, but, it wasn't significant. 2. In feeling refreshment, the market dentifrices had more positive answers significantly. 3. In feeling taste change, the market dentifries had more duration of taste change significantly. 4. In feeling oral dryness, the market dentifrices had more duration of oral dryness after toothbrushing. but, it wasn't significant. 5. As a result about reviewing the dental journals about ingredients of D.I.Y dentirices, green tea, sodium carbonate, bamboo salt, propolis had each evidence. But, We could not find out the evidences of calculus adhesion by corn starch, preservative by napri, disinfectant of peppermint. Conclusions : Although we cannot find the difference of the effect of dental plaque removal between D.I.Y dentifrices and market dentifrices, and D.I.Y dentifrices have the merits of decrease of oral dryness and taste change, it was suggested to have another test about stability and safety of D.I.Y dentifrices for safety of the user of D.I.Y dentifrices.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the plaque removal effects of vacuum oral cleaner developed for the patients with limited mobility with those of manual toothbrushes and high pressure injection oral cleaner (dental water jet). Meterials and methods : Thirty human subjects were measured with Patient Hygiene Performance index (PHP index) and O'Leary index before and after the use of toothbrush, high pressure injection oral cleaner and vacuum oral cleaner. These three different oral hygiene methods were conducted with seven-day intermittence. Then the statistical analysis was carried out to define plaque removal rate of three different oral hygiene methods (${\alpha}=.05$). Results : According to the efficacy analysis of plaque removal before and after the oral cleaning using each of three methods, significant reduction in plaque after the treatment compared to the previous state when using toothbrush, high pressure injection oral cleaner, and vacuum oral cleaner was observed (P < 0.001). PHP index of tooth brushing was higher than that of the high pressure injection oral cleaner, while PHP index of vacuum oral cleaner did not show significant difference from either of the other two methods. There was no significance difference in O'Leary index among the three methods. Conclusion : Effect of plaque removal using the vacuum oral cleaner is comparable to that of manual tooth brush or high pressure injection oral cleaner, so it will be helpful for self-oral hygiene care of the patients with limited mobility.
Purpose: Oral hygiene, maintained through plaque control, helps prevent periodontal disease and dental caries. This study was conducted to examine the accuracy of plaque detection with an intraoral scanner(IOS) compared to images captured with an optical camera. Materials and Methods: To examine the effect of color tone, artificial tooth resin samples were stained red, blue, and green, after which images were acquired with a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera and an IOS device. Stained surface ratios were then determined and compared. Additionally, the deviation rate of the IOS relative to the DSLR camera was computed for each color. In the clinical study, following plaque staining with red disclosing solution, the staining was captured by the DSLR and IOS devices, and the stained area on each image was measured. Results: The stained surface ratios did not differ significantly between DSLR and IOS images for any color group. Additionally, the deviation rate did not vary significantly across colors. In the clinical test, the stained plaque appeared slightly lighter in color, and the delineation of the stained areas less distinct, on the IOS compared to the DSLR images. However, the stained surface ratio was significantly higher in the IOS than in the DSLR group. Conclusion: When employing IOS with dental plaque staining, the impact of color was minimal, suggesting that the traditional red stain remains suitable for plaque detection. IOS images appeared relatively blurred and enlarged relative to the true state of the teeth, due to inferior sharpness compared to camera images.
PURPOSE. This study evaluated the availability of multi-directionally forged (MDF) titanium (Ti) as a component of removable partial dentures (RPDs). MDF-Ti remarkably improved the mechanical properties of RPDs due to its ultrafine-grained structure. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The wear resistance, plaque adhesion, and machinability of MDF-Ti were tested. As controls, commercially pure (CP) titanium was used for wear, plaque adhesion, and machinability tests. For wear resistance, the volume losses of the titanium teeth before and after wear tests were evaluated. Plaque adhesion was evaluated by the assay of Streptococcus mutans. In the machinability test, samples were cut and ground by a steel fissure bur and carborundum (SiC) point. An unpaired t-test was employed for the analysis of the significant differences between MDF-Ti and the control in the results for each test. RESULTS. Wear resistance and plaque adherence of MDF-Ti similar to those of CP-Ti (P>.05) were indicated. MDF-Ti exhibited significantly larger volume loss than CP-Ti in all conditions except 100/30,000 g/rpm in machinability tests (P<.05). CONCLUSION. Although the wear resistance and plaque adherence of MDF-Ti were comparable to those of controls, MDF-Ti showed better machinability than did CP-Ti. MDF-Ti could be used as a framework material for RPDs.
Objectives: This study involved a non-equivalent control group, pre-test/post-test measurement experiment to evaluate the efficacy of distributing plaque disclosing agents to healthy adults living in South Korea and promoting its self-application. Methods: O'Leary index, PHP index, oral health behavior intention, and oral care satisfaction were used as research tools. A notice was posted on the bulletin board from September 12 to October 15, 2016, to recruit adults aged 20-50 years. Data were analyzed using SPSS Version 22.0, and frequency analysis, Pearson's chi-squared, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Kruskal-Wallis, and repeated measures ANOVA were performed. Results: The O'Leary index was significantly reduced in the group (p<0.01), and time (p<0.01) after education and width of the decrease had the highest score in the group that received education on plaque disclosing only. They were followed by the group that received education on plaque disclosing and the rolling method, the group that received education on the rolling method alone, and the control group. The PHP index significantly decreased in the group(p<0.01) and time (p<0.01), and the group time (p=0.039) after education, and width of the decrease had the highest score in the group that received education on plaque disclosing and rolling method. They were followed by the group that received education on plaque disclosing alone, the group that received education on the rolling method alone, and the control group. Conclusions: Based on the aforementioned findings, the direct use of plaque disclosing had a marked effect on self-oral care. These results suggest that the self-application of plaque disclosing could be an effective self-care method for improving the oral environment.
The aim of this study was to make a comparison of dental plaque control and reduction of oral malodor according to hardness of detergent food. Subjects are 1 male(5.0%) and 19 females(95. 0%), the average age of 20.8 years old. The study was conducted from March 6 to April 24, 2014. Detergent foods which were selected during this experiment were cucumber, cabbage and tomato. The data were analyzed by using SPSS where the PHP Index, plaque rate, $H_2S$, $(CH_3)_2S$, Oral Gas, Expiration Gas were analyzed by Non-parametric Statistics and it was compared to the results of the compared mean whereas factors of detergent food before and after ingestion were analyzed by paired t-test. With all detergent foods, compared with the degree of control of dental plaque before and after ingestion showed a statistically significant difference between PHP index from cucumber, PHP index and plaque rate from tomato, and plaque rate from cabbage.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the general characteristics of dental patients to their total O'Leary index and individual plaque indexes in a bid to check the oral hygiene state of citizens and evaluate their plaque management ability. The subjects in this study were 288 patients at dental hospitals and clinics in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province. A survey was conducted from September to November 2008. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. Overall, the O'Leary index of the patients investigated stood at 72 percent. By age and gender, the O'Leary index was highest among those in their 30s(83%) and among the women(75%)(p<.05). As to the influence of toothbrushing frequency, the patients who did it twice or more a day had the highest O'Leary index(75%)(p<.001). By the use of oral hygiene supplies, the patients who used oral hygiene supplies had a higher O'Leary index(76%) than the others who didn't(p<.01). 2. As for plaque index for each tooth, 28 percent of their teeth were given zero point, and 52 percent were given one mark. 13 percent were given two marks, and 6.3 percent were given three marks. Thus, the teeth that were given one mark were largest in number(p<.001). 3. As for plaque index for labial posterior mandibular, 43 percent of their teeth were given one point, and 36 percent were given zero mark. 14 percent were given three mark, and 5 percent were given three marks(p<.01). 4. As for plaque index for buccal posterior maxilla, 57 percent of their teeth were given one point, and 20 percent were given zero mark. 16 percent were given two mark, and 6.3 percent were given three marks(p<.01). 5. As for plaque index for lingual posterior mandibular, 56 percent of their teeth were given one point, and 27.8 percent were given zero mark. 9 percent were given three mark and 6 percent were given three mark(p<.001).
