  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the related factors to dental fear in some adults. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 320 adults in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from April to June, 2013. Except 14 incomplete answers, data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 program. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects(7 questions), dental fear related factor(18 questions), distrust for dentist(15 questions), and distrust for dental hygienist(11 questions). The instrument for dental treatment fear was Dental fear Survey(DFS) adapted from Kleinknecht and partly modified by Choi. Out of 20 questions, 18 questions were reconstructed and score by Likert 5 scale. Higher score means higher dental fear. Cronbach alpha was 0.959 in the study. The distrust for dentist and dental hygienist was adapted from Choi and reconstructed and score by Likert 5 scale. Higher score means higher distrust for dentist and dental hygienist. Cronbach alpha was 0.937 in distrust for dentist and 0.874 in distrust for dental hygienist in the study. Results: Those who experienced dental pain tended to have dental fear. The reasons for dental fear were as follows; bad breath(2.96 out of 5 points, hereafter represented as of 2.96/5), dental caries(2.88/5), missing teeth(2.87/5) and tooth pain(2.77/5). The distrust for the dentist was the main dental fear in the adults. Conclusions: The dental fear was closely related to gender, experience of dental pain, oral symptoms and distrust for the dentist. As the psychological pain in the patients was mainly influenced by the trustful atmosphere, it is necessary to make the patient easy before treatment.

  • A dental ultrasonic surgical instrument, commercially known as a scaler, is a high-value-added advanced technology that is used for tartar removal, implant operations, and gum and jaw bone surgery. In this study, the piezoelectric phenomenon for making linear motion associated with input electrical signals was studied, and the behavior of the ultrasonic vibrator was investigated by using the commercially available finite element program ANSYS(R) for the purpose of designing dental surgery tools. Modal analysis was carried out, and the optimal frequency range was calculated from the analyzed results. The ultrasonic vibrator was then redesigned based on the calculated optimal frequency range. The performance of the system was tested, and consequently, the proposed methodology was proven useful in vibrator design.

  • We developed the numerical analysis program using LabVIEW for the monte-carlo simulation code for OCT signal in dental medium. In calculation, we obtain the two different signals as a function of the probing depth. These two signals are very different in their angular distributions, and the numbers of scattering in dental medium. Signal 2 begins to exceed the signal 1 at a very small probing depth(=60${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$).

  • Moderate to severe dentofacial deformities usually require combined orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery to obtain the most stable result with optimal function and facial esthetics. Accordingly, the orthodontist and oral maxillofacial surgeon must be able to exactly diagnose existing deformities, establish an appropriate treatment plan, and execute the recommended treatment. Especially, to obtain optimal result of the maxillary surgery, model surgery is essential. But, the preoperatively planned position of the maxillary dental arch often cannot be sufficiently achieved during actual surgery, and deviations in the sagittal and vertical dimensions are common. To achieve three dimensional repositioning of the maxilla exactly, several methods have been introduced so far. Recently Model Repositioning Instrument (MRI, SAM, Inc., $M\ddot{u}nchen$, Germany), one of these methods, has been introduced and applied clinically, which is reported as accurate, effective and prompt method for three dimensional repositioning of the maxilla. This article describes an introduction and a clinical application of this MRI.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the characteristics of tooth surface after using Gracy curet and Ultrasonic scaler Methods: In this study, 12 teeth extracted were used. 12 specimens were divided into three groups with the same numbers, which were classified into Control group, Gracy curet use group, and Ultrasonic scaler use group, and after performing instrument operation, we measured the roughness and the loss degree of tooth surface by using SEM. Results: In groups using Gracy curet and Ultrasonic scaler, the roughness and the loss of tooth surface increased significantly(p<0.05). In the roughness of groups using Gracy curet and Ultrasonic scaler, Ultrasonic scaler group was higher in crown, but Gracy curet group was higher in root. As a result of observation through SEM, the roughness and the loss degree increased in order of Control group, Ultrasonic scaler use group, and Gracy curet use group. Conclusions: Taken together above results, both hand instrument and ultrasound equipment create roughness and loss in crown and in root, and hand instruments makes rougher than ultrasonic instruments in root, so it is thought to require thorough and accurate technical application not to damage tooth surface when removing plaque.
