Statement of problem : Resin cements were used widely on all ceramic crowns, but the influence of resin cements on biocells was not understood clearly. Purpose : This study was investigated to evaluate the biocompatibility of resin cements for all-ceramic crowns. Material and Method : The resin cements used in this study were Panavia F (Kuraray Co., Ltd. Japan), Variolink II (Vivadent Ets., Schann / Liechtenstein), and Bistite II (Bistite dual cure resin cement-clear Tokuyama Soda Co. Japan). The viability of normal human oral keratocytes, gingival fibroblast, and gingival fibroblast immortalized by Human Papilloma virus 16 was measured in vitro for evaluation of cytotoxicity on resin cements, and the response of pulp tissue was analyzed and evaluated with light microscope after application of cements at cutting edge of incisors. Results : The normal human oral keratocytes was the most sensitive to toxicity of resin cement, and toxicity of cements was higher in Bistite II than in Variolink II. The cell viability of immortalized gingival fibroblast did not affected by type of cement and cultivation period, but there was a tendency that cytotoxicity in Bistite II was higher than in Variolink II. The cell viability of gingival fibroblast was similar to that of immortalized gingival fibroblast regardless of cement type, but Bistite II showed more toxic than others after 5 days cultivation. The responses of pulp tissue according to cement type were similar after 2 days cultivation, but revealed high toxicity in Bistite II after 10 days cultivation. Conclusion : Variolink II was more biocompatible than any other resin cements used in this study.
The author has studied comparatively the sealing quality of polycarboxylate cement, one of the newest dental cement systems, and zinc oxide eugenol cement by means of penetration of 2% methylene blue solution through the root apex of human teeth in 72 cases as time elapsed. Followings are the results obtained from this study. 1) In all groups, there was no increase in penetration related to increased time of immersion in the dye. 2) In polycarboxylate cement groups, there was a significant difference in depth of dye penetration of each tooth, but in zinc oxide eugenol cement group, there was a slight difference. 3) The depth of dye penetration of zinc oxide eugenol cement group is slightly lower than that of poly carboxylate cement groups. 4) In polycarboxylate cement groups, Carbolit cement group showed comparatively lower grade of dye penetration than Carbo cement group.

The antimicrobial action of various dental cements evaluated against common micro-organisms most frequenty found within the components of the normal bacterial flora of oral cavity. They include Streptococcus mutans (2 strains), Lactobacillus acidophilus, Actinomyces viscosus, and Streptococcus sanguis. The test was done by the use of brain heart infusion (BHI) agar plates. A standard mix of each cement was made and placed on the plates which were seeded with a standard culture of microorganisms. After incubation, the halo of bacterial growth inhibition around the cement was identified and its size was measured. Some of the cements tested had obvious antibacterial effect. The cements listed in decreasing order of effectiveness are 1) zinc phosphate and oxyphosphate, 2) silicate, 3) zinc oxide-eugenol, 4) calcium hydroxide, and 5) carboxylate.
The autor studied skin reactions and their incidences among 130 dental students and dentists to 2% Iidocaine HCI, 2% procaine HCI, direct resin, plaster of paris, zinc oxide-eugenol cement, and adhesive plaster by Patch test. The results of the studies are as follows:
1. Eighteen cases out of 130 revealed slight positive reaction toa 1 or 2 allergens.
2. Lidocaine HCL showed 1 case, procaine HCL 4 cases, direct resin 4 cases, Z.O.E. cement 1 case, adhesive plaster 13 case, and plaster of paris showed none.
3. Two delayed reaction were detected after 48 hours, one of which reacted both lidocaine HCL and direct resin, and the other one was a case of adhesive plaster.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of tooth surface pre-treatment steps on shear bond strength, which is essential for understanding the adhesive cementation process. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Shear bond strengths of different cements with various tooth surface treatments (none, etching, priming, or etching and priming) on enamel and dentin of human teeth were measured using the Swiss shear test design. Three adhesives (Permaflo DC, Panavia F 2.0, and Panavia V5) and one self-adhesive cement (Panavia SA plus) were included in this study. The interface of the cement and the tooth surface with the different pre-treatments was analyzed using SEM. pH values of the cements and primers were measured. RESULTS. The highest bond strength values for all cements were achieved with etching and primer on enamel ($25.6{\pm}5.3-32.3{\pm}10.4MPa$). On dentin, etching and priming produced the highest bond strength values for all cements ($8.6{\pm}2.9-11.7{\pm}3.5MPa$) except for Panavia V5, which achieved significantly higher bond strengths when pre-treated with primer only ($15.3{\pm}4.1MPa$). Shear bond strength values were correlated with the micro-retentive surface topography of enamel and the tag length on dentin except for Panavia V5, which revealed the highest bond strength with primer application only without etching, resulting in short but sturdy tags. CONCLUSION. The highest bond strength can be achieved for Panavia F 2.0, Permaflo DC, and Panavia SA plus when the tooth substrate is previously etched and the respective primer is applied. The new cement Panavia V5 displayed low technique-sensitivity and attained significantly higher adhesion of all tested cements to dentin when only primer was applied.
In identifying bodies that are severely decayed or damaged, methods using fingerprints and various biochemical tests are known to have its limits. To overcome this, forensic odontological method which is based on the analysis of the cranium, tooth and dental restoration is used to enhance the accuracey of individual identification. For this reason, I have come to analysis of the dental materials that exists between the teeth that is perceived to have been previously restored and the one adjacent to it. By analyzing the constituents of gold crown-restored, non-precious metal-restored, gold inlay-restored and amalgam -restored teeth, and adjacent teeth using EDX(energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis) which was invented to analyze very small amount of elements, the nature of the restoration could be predicted and the results obtained were as follows. 1. Some of constitute of gold alloy was extracted from residual cement of gold crown restoration, but that was not extracted from the restored tooth and the one adjacent to it. 2. Some of constituents of non-precious metal alloy was extracted both in the residual cement on the tooth with no-precious metal restoration and in the tooth with the restoration itself. However, none of its constituents were found in the tooth adjacent to it. 3. Some of constituents of gold alloy were found in the residual cement of gold inlay, but they were not found in the restored tooth and the adjacent tooth. 4. Some of constituents of amalgam alloy were found both in tooth restored with amalgam and in the adjacent tooth. From the results obtained above, it is possible to utilize the data obtained from analyizing residual dental materials in a more effective way. This data compensates for the lost data due to any harm done to the restorations prior to individual identification and further enhances the accuracy. Therefore, it could be concluded that this process of analyzing residual dental materials could be beneficial to individual identification in the area of forensic odontoldogy.
PURPOSE. Considering the importance of retention in the success and long-term clinical service of fixed partial dentures (FPDs) as well as the existing controversy regarding the effect of GLUMA desensitizer on the retention of full metal crowns cemented with RelyX U200 self-adhesive cement, this study aimed to assess the effect of GLUMA desensitizer on the retention of full metal crowns cemented using RelyX U200. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In this experimental study, 20 sound human premolars were prepared; a 0.5 mm chamfer finish line was prepared above the cementoenamel junction. The teeth were randomly assigned to two groups: a desensitizer group (n = 10, treated with GLUMA desensitizer) and a control (n = 10, no surface treatment). Full metal crowns were fabricated of base metal alloy and had a ring. All crowns were cemented with RelyX U200 and subjected to retention test by using a universal testing machine. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 and independent t-test. RESULTS. The mean tensile bond strength was significantly higher in the GLUMA desensitizer group ($230.63{\pm}63.8N$) compared to the control group ($164.45{\pm}39.3N$) ($P{\leq}.012$). CONCLUSION. GLUMA desensitizer increases the tensile bond strength of RelyX U200 self-adhesive cement to dentin.
All the faculties at the prosthodontic department in Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital at Gangdong, have been implementing the Top-Down concept of treatment approach since 2006 in which the outcomes of the last prosthetic treatment are predicted in advance during the treatment planning stage of patients with dental tissue defects. Based on the Top-Down concept, this report is also an example of how the final prosthetic treatment was performed in advance before going into implant surgery for the missing teeth. Among the various methods of connecting implant fixture and restoration, the cement-retained method is relatively simple to manufacture restoration without being constrained by the angle of the implants placed, but difficult to remove remaining subgingival excess cement completely, and to detach it being when necessary. In the report, SB-locking method will be introduced which enables an aesthetic implant restoration without either a screw hole or residual excess cement.
