Densification Behavior of Rhenium Alloy using Master Sintering Curve

  • This study investigated the densification behavior of rhenium alloys including W-25 wt.%Re and Re-2W-1Ta (pure Re) during sintering. The dilatometry experiments were carried out to obtain the in-situ shrinkage in $H_2$ atmosphere. The measured data was analyzed through shrinkage, strain rate and relative density, and then symmetrically treated to construct the linearized form of master sintering curve (MSC) and MSC as a well-known and straightforward approach to describe the densification behavior during sintering. The densification behaviors for each material were analyzed in many respects including apparent activation energy, densification parameter, and densification ratio. MSC with a minimal set of preliminary experiments can make the densification behavior to be characterized and predicted as well as provide guideline to sinter cycle design. Considering the results of linearized form and MSC, it was confirmed that the W-25 wt.%Re compared to Pure Re is more easily densified at the relatively low temperature.

Effect of Particle Size on Zirconia Gel-Casting Process

  • The fabrication process of zirconia gel-casting was studied to obtain dense zirconia on a large scale or with complicated shapes. As an experimental parameter, two different particle sizes ($0.1{\mu}m$ and $0.7{\mu}m$) of zirconia powder were applied to the gel-casting process. The viscosity behavior of slurries incorporating 40 vol% of zirconia powder was examined as a function of the dispersant content and the solid load to determine the optimum dispersion conditions. In addition, the gelation time with an initiator, the de-binding behavior, and the main factors affecting densification were examined. The densification of the gel-casted zirconia green body depended on the mixing ratio between the monomer and the dimer and on the zirconia particle size. A green body with a small particle size of $0.1{\mu}m$ showed less densification, with a relative density of 93%. This may be due to the excess number of bubbles created through interactions between the larger particle surface and polymer additives during the ball-milling process.

탄소 소재 치밀화 공정의 밀도향상을 위한 최적 조건 설정 (Finding Optimal Conditions for the Densification Process of Carbon Materials)

  • Recently, the material industry in the world has started appreciating the value of new materials that can overcome the limitation of steel material. In particular, new materials are expected to play a very important role in the future industry, demonstrating superior performance compared to steel in lightweight materials and ability to maintain in high temperature environments. Carbon materials have recently increased in value due to excellent physical properties such as high strength and ultra lightweight compared to steel. However, they have not overcome the limitation of productivity and price. The carbon materials are classified into various composites depending on the purpose of use and the performance required. Typical composites include carbon-glass, carbon-carbon, and carbon-plastic composites. Among them, carbon-carbon composite technology is a necessary technology in aviation and space, and can be manufactured with high investment cost and technology. In this paper, in order to find the optimal conditions to achieve productivity improvement and cost reduction of carbon material densification process, the correlation between each process parameters and results of densification is first analyzed. The main process parameters of the densification process are selected by analyzing the correlation results. And then a certain linear relationship between major process variables and density of carbon materials is derived by performing a regression analysis based on the historical production result data. Using the derived casualty, the optimal management range of major process variables is suggested. Effective process operation through optimal management of variables will have a great effect on productivity improvement and manufacturing cost reduction by shortening the lead time.

An advanced single-particle model for C3S hydration - validating the statistical independence of model parameters

  • An advanced continuum-based multi-physical single particle model was recently introduce for the hydration of tricalcium silicate ($C_3S$). In this model, the dissolution and the precipitation events are modeled as two different yet simultaneous chemical reactions. Product precipitation involves a nucleation and growth mechanism wherein nucleation is assumed to happen only at the surface of the unreacted core and product growth is characterized via a two-step densification mechanism having rapid growth of a low density initial product followed by slow densification. Although this modeling strategy has been shown to nicely mimic all stages of $C_3S$ hydration - dissolution, dormancy (induction), the onset of rapid hydration, the transition to slow hydration and prolonged reaction - the major criticism is that many adjustable parameters are required. If formulated correctly, however, the model parameters are shown here to be statistically independent and significant.

마그네시아의 소결과 미세구조에 미치는 $TiO_2$의 영향 (Influence of $TiO_2$ on Sintering and Microstructure of Magnesia)

  • The influence of TiO2 addition on the sintering and microstructure of magnesia ceramics was studied. An excess amount of TiO2 over the solid solubility limit reacted with magnesia to form Mg2TiO4 compound above 130$0^{\circ}C$. The deviation of lattice parameter of MgO was estimated to be under 0.2% when existence of TiO2 in MgO. The addition of TiO2 markedly promoted the densification of MgO at comparatively low temperature and the sintered density of about 98% of the theorectical was obtained at 150$0^{\circ}C$, 2h. The densification was mainly governed by grain growth of MgO and the effect of Mg2TiO4 existing as a second phase on depression of grain growth of MgO was not exhibited.

가중측점망 조정법의 적용에 관한 연구 (An Investigation on Densification by Modified Weighted Station Approach)

  • 실용성과를 갱신하기 위하여 새로운 측지망을 국가 기준점망에 결합하는 문제는 조정원점의 선택방법에 따라 조정결과가 바뀌는 측지망의 독특한 특성 때문에 경험적인 최선의 방법을 채용해 오고 있다. 이 논문에서는 기지점의 좌표를 가상의 측점량으로 고려하여 미지점으로 취급하는 가중측점망(Weighted Station Parameter Network) 방식을 적용하고자 하였으며, 기설 기준점의 공분산 행렬을 사용하는 대신에 대각선 요소만을 고려하는 개선된 방법을 제안하였다. 기설삼각망의 측정량이 미지인 국내의 측지망에서는 개선된 방법이 변동점 검출과 결합조정에 효과적으로 적용될 수 있음을 보여주고 있으며, 작업규정과 테스트망에 대한 분석을 통하여 기설 2등 삼각점의 정확도는 ${\pm}16^{{\prime}{\prime}}$(${\pm}0.08m$)의 정확도를 갖는 것으로 평가되었다. 또한 정밀 2차 기준점망을 1, 2등 삼각점에 결합할 경우에 ${\pm}2.3^{{\prime}{\prime}}$의 정확도를 확보할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

화학기상침투법 반응로 내부 유동에 따른 탄소/탄소 복합재 밀도화 (Effects of the Gas Flow Inside a CVI Reactor on the Densification of a C/C Composite)

  • 본 논문에서는 화학기상침투법(CVI) 공정으로 제작되는 탄소/탄소 복합재의 밀도화 과정을 수치해석적으로 연구하였다. 이를 위해 선행 연구에서 개발된 전산유체역학 모델과 반응로 내 주요 화학 반응 모델을 연계한 다중물리 수치해석 모델을 이용하여, 섬유 프리폼의 밀도와 공극률 변화를 다양한 측면에서 분석하였다. 특히 프리폼 주변 기체 유동의 형태에 따른 밀도화 변화를 알기 위해, 특정 형상의 구조물을 프리폼 주변에 배치시켜 유동을 변화시킨 후 프리폼의 밀도화를 계산하였다. 총 4가지 다른 형태의 구조물로 해석한 결과 프리폼 주변의 유동 형태 및 속도 분포를 구조물 형상으로 제어할 수 있었으며, 프리폼의 평균 밀도를 높이거나 밀도 편차를 감소시키는 것이 가능함을 확인하였다. 본 연구에서는 실제 산업 현장에서 사용되는 반응로와 공정 조건을 모델로 이용하였다.

녹색발광 β-SiAlON:Eu 세라믹 플레이트 형광체의 치밀화 소결 (The High Density Sintering of Green-emitting β-SiAlON:Eu Ceramic Plate Phosphor)

  • $Eu^{2+}$-doped $\beta$-SiAlONs ($Si_{6-z}Al_zO_zN_{8-z}:Eu_y$) are recognized as promising phosphor materials to build an white LED for lighting application due to its excellent absorption/emission efficiency in the long wave length region. In this research, the fabrication of $\beta$-SiAlON:Eu plate phosphor by sintering was investigated with fixed Eu content(y) and varied composition of the host lattice(z). The addition of the activator $Eu_2O_3$ lead to enhanced densification by forming the transient liquid phase. The refinement of a composition by the calculated lattice parameter indicated that the measured composition of the fabricated specimens is nearly same to that of designed one. The single phase $\beta$-SiAlON:Eu plate with relative density of 96.4% was achieved by addition of 2 wt% CaO, which implies the possibility of full densification by adjusting the processing variables.

Effect of the Processing Parameters on the Densification and Strength of 2D SiC Fiber-SiC Matrix Composites Fabricated by Slurry Infiltration and Stacking Process

  • 2D SiC fiber-SiC (SiC/SiC) composites were fabricated via slurry infiltration and a stacking process. The effects of the additive composition and content in SiC slurries and the effect of the sintering time on the sintered density and strength of SiC/SiC composites were investigated. A slurry containing $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3-MgO$ (AYM) additives led to a higher strength compared to a slurry containing $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3-CaO$ (AYC) additives. The sintered density increased as the sintering time increased and showed a maximum (>98%) at 4 h. In contrast, the flexural strength increased as the sintering time increased and showed a maximum (615 MPa) at 6 h. The relative density and flexural strength increased as the additive content increased.

중성자 회절법에 의한 Ni-W 합금 소결체의 격자상수 측정 (Estimation of a Lattice Parameter of Sintered Ni-W Alloy Rods by a Neutron Diffraction Method)

  • Ni-W(1-5 at.%) alloy rods were made by powder metallurgy process including powder mixing, compacting and subsequent sintering. Ni and W powder of appropriate compositions were mixed by a ball milling and isostatically pressed in a rubber mold into a rod. The compacted rods were sintered at $1000^{\circ}C-1150^{\circ}C$ at a reduced atmosphere for densification. The lattice parameters of Ni-W alloys were estimated by a high resolution neutron powder diffractometer. All sintered rods were found to have a face centered cubic structure without any impurity phase, but the diffraction peak locations were linearly shifted with increasing W content. The lattice parameter of a pure Ni rod was $3.5238{\AA}$ which is consistent with the value reported in JCPDS data. The lattice parameter of N-W alloy rods increased by $0.004{\AA}$ for 1 atomic % of W, which indicates the formation of a Ni-W solid solution due to the substitution of nickel atoms by tungsten atoms of larger size.
