  • Wireless communication systems are inevitable for efficient underwater activities. Because of the poor propagation characteristics of light and electromagnetic waves, acoustic waves are generally used for the underwater wireless communication. Although there are many kinds of information type, visual images take an essential role especially for search and identification activities. For this reason, we developed an acoustic-based underwater image transmission system under a dual use technology project supported by MOCIE (Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy). For the application to complicated and time-varying underwater environments all-digital transmitter and receiver systems are investigated. Array acoustic transducers are used at the receiver, which have the center frequency of 32kHz and the bandwidth of 4kHz. To improve transmission speed and quality, various algorithms and systems are used. The system design techniques will be discussed in detail including image compression/ decompression system, adaptive beam- forming, fast RLS adaptive equalizer, ${\partial}/4$ QPSK (Quadrilateral Phase Shift Keying) modulator/demodulator, and convolution coding/ Viterbi. • The subsystems of two channel correlation radiometer such as RF front-end, IF and LF unit, LO unit, software based I/Q demodulator and complex correlator are characterized and their performance is analyzed in this paper. The limited hardware calibration method and receiver design consideration are discussed. The receiver architecture of 37GHz correlation radiometer is integrated. The designed radiometer employs a single-sideband superheterodyne receiver. The center frequency of the radiometer is 37 GHz and IF center frequency is 1.95 GHz with the equivalent noise bandwidth of 79.6 MHz. The receiver has less than 4.2 dB noise figure which is calculated by the Y-factor method and its gain can be adjusted from 60 dB to 80 dB.

  • We investigate the design of an interpolation filter of a MF-TDMA demodulator which is applied to DVB-RCS. If sampling is not synchronized to the data symbols, timing adjustment in digital receiver must be performed by interpolation. It is impossible that conventional sinc interpolation filter coefficients are actually extended to infinity. We propose a Kaiser window interpolation filter and a sinc interpolation filter using th Kaiser window. Simulation results show that the performance improvement is realized by employing the proposed interpolation filter.

  • We present a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor system for measuring static and high-speed dynamic strains with a resolution of about $5\mu$strain. This sensor system demodulates signals from the FBG sensor utilizing a compensated tunable narrow bandpass filter. We have placed a set of twelve FBGs to concrete specimen and measured its internal stress under various applied load conditions.itions.

  • This paper reports on our development of a dual-mode transceiver for a CMOS high-rate Bluetooth system-onchip solution. The transceiver includes most of the radio building blocks such as an active complex filter, a Gaussian frequency shift keying (GFSK) demodulator, a variable gain amplifier (VGA), a dc offset cancellation circuit, a quadrature local oscillator (LO) generator, and an RF front-end. It is designed for both the normal-rate Bluetooth with an instantaneous bit rate of 1 Mb/s and the high-rate Bluetooth of up to 12 Mb/s. The receiver employs a dualconversion combined with a baseband dual-path architecture for resolving many problems such as flicker noise, dc offset, and power consumption of the dual-mode system. The transceiver requires none of the external image-rejection and intermediate frequency (IF) channel filters by using an LO of 1.6 GHz and the fifth order onchip filters. The chip is fabricated on a $6.5-mm^{2}$ die using a standard $0.25-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. Experimental results show an in-band image-rejection ratio of 40 dB, an IIP3 of -5 dBm, and a sensitivity of -77 dBm for the Bluetooth mode when the losses from the external components are compensated. It consumes 42 mA in receive ${\pi}/4-diffrential$ quadrature phase-shift keying $({\pi}/4-DQPSK)$ mode of 8 Mb/s, 35 mA in receive GFSK mode of 1 Mb/s, and 32 mA in transmit mode from a 2.5-V supply. These results indicate that the architecture and circuits are adaptable to the implementation of a low-cost, multi-mode, high-speed wireless personal area network.

  • In the DVB-S2, which is the technical specification of the second generation digital video broadcasting via satellite, APSK modulation scheme along with LDPC coding schemes are defined. APSK is a multi-lelvel PSK modulation scheme and decoding of LDPC coded signal requires soft decision information. Therefore, the APSK demodulator at the receiver should have capability of estimating soft information. In this paper, we introduce a method to estimate soft information by using simple distance estimation, and show that this method overestimates the soft information. Subsequently, this overestimated soft information leads to performance degradation. In order to overcome this problem, we propose a scaling method to improve the performance at the receiver In addition, we show that the proposed scaling scheme enables us to estimate the soft information with linear order complexity and produce the performance close to the maximum likelihood detection.

  • Visible Light Communication is one of the promising technologies for wireless communication due to the possibility to use existing LED lightening infrastructure to transmit data. LED has the ability to turn on and off very fast enough that our human eyes can't recognize so it can be used to transmit data via visible light along with illumination. But it faces flicker problem due to the brightness discrepancies between '1' and '0' bit patterns inside a data frame. Various run length limited (RLL) coding scheme like Manchester code, 4B6B, 8B10B or VPPM can be used to solve flickering problem. So we propose pseudo Manchester codding which can transmit data without modifying LED modulator and demodulator circuit as well as solve flickering problem.

  • It is difficult to realize adaptive main carrier rejection circuit in feedforward-type LPA(Linear Power Amplifier) because the gain and nonlinear characteristics of power amplifier are changed according to operating frequency, voltage, temperature. Usually, pilot tones are used for adaptive LPA operation. but in this paper, the relative phase, which in obtained through I&Q demodulator using input signals as LO signals and main-path & sub-path signals as RF signals, and the magnitude of main-path & sub-path signals are compared, so main carrier rejection is obtained. The proposed method rejects main carriers by 28.34 ~ 34.66dB (@Po=36.2 ~ 28.2 dBm/tone) with two tones at 877MHz, 882MHz and also rejects main carriers by 31.3dB despite changing condition of operating voltage.

  • An optically controlled silicon MESFET (OPFET) was fabricated by diffusion process to enhance the quantum efficiency, which is the most important optoelectronic device performance usually affected by ion implantation process due to large number of process induced defects. The desired impurity distribution profile and the junction depth were obtained solely with diffusion, and etching processes monitored by atomic force microscope, spreading resistance profiling and C-V measurements. With this approach fabrication induced defects are reduced, leading to significantly improved performance. The fabricated OPFET devices showed proper I-V characteristics with desired pinch-off voltage and threshold voltage for normally-on devices. The peak photoresponsivity was obtained at 620 nm wavelength and the extracted external quantum efficiency from the photoresponse plot was found to be approximately 87.9%. This result is evidence of enhancement of device quantum efficiency fabricated by the diffusion process. It also supports the fact that the diffusion process is an extremely suitable process for fabrication of high performance optoelectronic devices. The maximum gain of OPFET at optical modulated signal was obtained at the frequency of 1 MHz with rise time and fall time approximately of 480 nS. The extracted transconductance shows the possible potential of device speed performance improvements for shorter gate length. The results support the use of a diffusion process for fabrication of high performance optoelectronic devices.
