  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the association between body mass index (BMI) and any type of clinical dementia. Methods: Participants were 60,321 people over 60 years of age enrolled in the Seoul Dementia Management Project in 2011. K-MMSE was used to classify participants as having a cognitive impairment and the Clinical Dementia Rating or DSM-IV by psychiatrists or neurologists to determine whether participants were in the dementia group or the non-dementia group. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and binary logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: In the univariate analysis, age, education level, living with spouse, BMI, alcohol consumption, and exercise were significantly associated with dementia. In multivariable analysis, increasing age was positively associated with dementia, and educational level was negatively associated with dementia. The exercise group had a lower prevalence of dementia than the non-exercise group. The odds ratio of dementia in the over-weight and obese groups compared to the normal group was 0.85 (95% CI 0.60, 0.98) and 0.64 (95%CI 0.46, 0.75), respectively. Conclusion: Results indicate that dementia is negatively associated with increasing BMI in people aged 60 years or older, but a prospective cohort study is needed to elucidate the causal effect relationship between BMI and dementia.

  • This study aims to obtain information about the ADL and I-ADL functions of people with dementia living in the community and nursing care facilities regarding their dementia stages for the purpose of supporting occupational therapists working in dementia care centers. The information was collected from 100 people with dementia living in the community and 100 people with dementia staying in care facilities from October 1 to November 20, 2015. 15 facilities participated in this study, including nursing homes, day care centers, health centers, geriatric hospitals and metropolitan dementia centers. All of the assessors were trained in the use of the instruments, ADCS-ADL, S-IADL, S-ADL and MMSE-K, by the researcher before conducting any evaluations or interviews. In order to compare the differences in the levels of ADL according to the dementia stage, an analysis was made via the post-hoc test after conducting a one-way ANOVA. An analysis of the residence type and dementia stage was made through the independent t-test. The comparison of the level of ADL between the people with dementia living in the community and those living in nursing homes showed differences in the moderate level of dementia for all items of the I-ADL and ADL (p<.01). The post-hoc test showed that there is a difference among the minimum, mild, and moderate levels. When the differences in ADL according to the residence type were examined, there were no significant differences in any of the stages (p>.05). Considering these results, it may be critical to identify the changes in the I-ADL rather than those in the ADL for the outcome index when conducting future intervention studies on dementia.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the three-dimensional hand-related dimensions of elderly women aged 70 to 84 years and to characterize them to develop safety gloves for dementia patients. The 3D data from the 8th Human Size Survey of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Size Korea, were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 program. The straight thumb length was longer in elderly women aged 70-74 than in those aged 80-84. To analyze the hand type of elderly women, four factors were categorized: hand and finger horizontal factor, hand vertical factor, finger digit V thickness factor, and finger length factor. Elderly women's hand types were categorized as 'long hands and thin fingers', 'thick hands with long fingers', and 'short hands and thick little fingers'. Elderly women aged 70-74 years and 80-84 years were analyzed as having the most 'long hands and thin fingers' type, while older women aged 75-79 years were analyzed as having the most 'thick hands and long fingers' type. It is known that the fingers get thicker and the size of hands increase as age advances, but by the age 80, there is a change in the size of hands again. In future research, it would be worth expanding to other age groups to explore differences between age groups and to develop safety gloves for real-world dementia patients based on the hand types analyzed.

  • Objective : In this article, we overviewed clinical Korean Medicine studies on dementia by analyzing papers published in Korea from 2010 to 2019. Methods : We explored research articles on dementia from 5 Korean research databases using the keyword 'dementia' and 'Korean Medicine'. We included original articles and reviews of clinical Korean Medicine and excluded single case study and experiment article of animal model. Then we analyzed them according to the published year, journal type, and research topics. Results & Conclusions : Research topics were classified into 'research trend', 'treatment', 'prevention', 'evaluation', 'medical expenses', 'collaborative practice' and 'others'. The largest number of articles were published in 2011(24.4%). 'Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry' was the journal with the most published articles(46.3%). In research topics, the analyses of research trend accounted for the largest portion(39.0%) and the articles about treatment for dementia or evaluation index in Korean medicine had the second largest proportion(14.6%). We hope that various researches for therapeutic effects, mechanisms and preventive effects of Korean Medicine in dementia would be conducted for future study.

Data was collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS/PC Win 10.0 Result: The major findings of the study are as follows. 1) the mean score on physical environment was $3.55{\pm}0.47$, and on psychosocial environment, $3.55{\pm}3.08$. 2) the mean score on disturbing behaviors showed that nonaggressive psychomotor behavior was the highest, and aggressive psychomotor behavior was the lowest. 3) the disturbing behaviors. in 5 the domains correlated with the environment and influencing factors included environment, family, level of dementia and level of ADL. Conclusion: Both the present physical environment and psychosocial environment influence the type of disturbing behavior in elderly people with dementia. Therefore, nursing can reduce the disturbing behaviors through maintenance of both the psychosocial environment and the physical environment. Furthermore, nurses must consider disturbing behaviors of elderly people with dementia by being aware of the level of dementia and ADL.

  • This pilot study examined the contribution of citizen science approach to the datification of factors influencing the progress of cognitive health of the older adults. Newspapers were reviewed and FGIs of field workers at a Day Care Center gathered relevant data from citizen. Two questions were put forward; whether new factors are drawn from citizen knowledge; if yes, whether they represent a new type of data. 'Aesal', personality of the older adults with dementia is noted as a new dementia affecting factor. The data on personality also present a new challenge for scientific measurement. The relationship between personality or psychology of the older adults and the risk of getting dementia has been a research field for a long time, yet the impact of personality on the progress of dementia has not been examined scientifically. Because of communication difficulties with the older adults with dementia, new types of indicators and new ways of measurements thus need to be developed.

  • Due to aging society, the prevalence of dementia is continually increasing and, thereby, causing a serious issue. Although Long Term Care Insurance is provided on a national level, it is not available for the elderly with dementia who do not satisfy the requirements. As the use of smartphones becomes widespread, this study investigated an application that can help disease management of the elderly with the early-stage (mild) dementia and communication among the family members based on analysis of the functions found in currently-available applications and survey among the relevant subjects. As a research method, based on review of the relevant theoretical studies, the service environment of applications available for the elderly with mild dementia was analyzed. Through this analysis, it found out that there is no application for the eldery with mild dementia. On the basis of the results, this study proposed a direction for design planning of an application included many functions like managements of taking medicine, physical activity, brain activity, information on dementia and notes. for dementia management aimed to help the patients with mild dementia manage the disease on their own. If this type of services are expanded in addition to the systemic support from the government, the data collected from these applications can contribute to improving management of mild dementia.
