  • This study seeks to probe the effects of attitude toward the elderly and knowledge of dementia on attitude toward dementia of care workers who work in nursing homes in Korea and Japan. Furthermore, this paper compares and analyzes whether there's a difference between Korea and Japan in terms of factors that determine the attitude toward dementia. Data were collected from 320 careworkers in korea and 350 careworkers in japan. The collected data has been analyzed by t-test and multiple regression analysis. The following results were found. First, as a result of comparing the level of attitude toward the elderly, as well as knowledge and attitude toward dementia, no meaningful difference was found in terms of knowledge of the dementia, but for attitude toward the disease and toward the elderly, the care workers in Japan were generally found to be more positive. Next, in terms of factors that determine the attitude toward the dementia, first, a careful examination of variables that influence the attitude towards the dementia found that the knowledge of dementia in Korea is (β=.305 p<0.001) and the attitude towards the elderly in Japan is (β=.348 p<0.001). Second, attitude toward the elderly and knowledge of the dementia was found to be a variable that influences attitude toward the dementia, both in Korea and Japan.

  • This study is a cross-sectional survey study aimed at collecting basic data for the development of a program to cultivate a positive attitude toward dementia among people caring for dementia patients. For this study, data were collected from March 1 to March 7, 2022 as a structured questionnaire, and 232 study participants were in their 20s to 60s. The collected data were derived from chi-square test, t-test, and simple regression analysis using the spss 18.0 program. As a result of the analysis, women had higher treatment knowledge for dementia than men, men had higher attitudes toward dementia than women (p<0.01), and people living with dementia patients had higher attitudes than those who gave birth (p<0.01). Attitudes toward dementia were more positive in the family than those with dementia patients (p<0.01). Dementia-related knowledge consists of disease knowledge, treatment knowledge, and nursing knowledge, of which only positive dementia attitude affects dementia treatment knowledge (t=5.29, p<0.01). Based on these results, it is suggested that the provision of accurate knowledge about dementia treatment should be planned first as a nursing program for dementia patients.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate compassion competence and its mediating effects on the relationship between attitudes toward dementia and care behavior among caregivers of older adults with dementia in nursing homes. Methods: 211 participants were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Data were collected from February 1st to May 24th, 2023, through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis and the bootstrapping method. Results: The mean score for care behavior was 3.67±0.97 (range 1~5). Caring behaviors were significantly associated with attitudes toward dementia (r=.76, p<.001) and compassion competence (r=.75, p<.001). Using Baron and Kenny's approach and PROCESS Macro model 4, care behavior was directly affected by dementia attitude (β=.76, p<.001). Compassion competence (β=.66, p<.001) was directly affected by dementia attitude. The partial mediating effects of compassion competence (β=.47, p<.001, 95% confidence interval 0.10~0.23) on the impact of dementia attitude on care behavior was confirmed. Conclusion: The results suggest that compassion competence should be considered when developing nursing interventions to enhance dementia-related attitudes and improve care behavior among caregivers of older adults with dementia.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate levels of dementia knowledge, dementia attitude, and physical activities and whether dementia knowledge and dementia attitude affect physical activities in old-old elderly who had high risk of dementia. A descriptive study design was used. Participants were 218 old-old elderly above 75 years at 9 elderly welfare facilities in K county from June 1 to 30 in 2016. Collected data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, hierarchical regression using SPSS WIN 18.0 program. The mean scores of dementia knowledge, dementia attitude, and physical activity of participants were low, there were positive correlations between dementia knowledge and dementia attitude (r=.380, p<.001), and physical activities (r=.211, p=.002), and between dementia attitude and physical activities (r=.380, p<.001). The significant predictors of physical activities were dementia attitude (${\beta}=.271$, p<.001), gender (${\beta}=.207$, p=.003) and education level (${\beta}=.184$, p=.023). These variables explained 28.8% of physical activities. In conclusion, we need to develop a customized multifactorial physical activity program with considering dementia knowledge and dementia attitude especially for old-old elderly women with low education level.

  • Purpose: This study was a descriptive study to identify the factors affecting the dementia prevention behavior of elders in rural communities. Methods: The participants in this study were 125 elders aged 60 or older who lived in Eup or Myeon areas of P city. For data analysis, SPSS/WIN 22.0 was used to perform descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and linear multiple regression and mediated effects. Results: Scores for dementia recognition, dementia attitude and dementia prevention behavior averaged 5.6±2.50 points in the 0~11 range, 38.8±4.59 in 14~56 and 20.2±3.59 in 10~30 respectively. Dementia recognition (a), dementia attitude (b), dementia prevention behavior (c) and the number of chronic diseases of the elders (d) were positively or negatively correlated with each other (rab=.29, p<.01; rbc=.26, p<.01; rac=.36, p<.01; rad=-.29, p<.01; rcd=.19, p<.05). Factors affecting dementia prevention behavior were dementia recognition, dementia attitude, and degree of dementia interest. When the number of chronic diseases affects dementia prevention behavior, dementia recognition has a mediating effect. Conclusion: In order to prevent dementia among elders in rural areas, appropriate management of chronic diseases and provision of appropriate dementia-related education and information to enhance dementia recognition should be provided.
