The high strength AlZnMgCu0.5 alloy is a light metal with good age hardenability, and has a high tensile and yielding strength. Therefore, it can be used for structures requiring high speciple strength. Even though high strength AlZnMgCu alloy has good mechanical properties, it has a lot of problems in TIG and MIG welding processes. Since lots of high heat absorption is introduced into the weldment during TIG and MIG processes, the microstructural variation and hot cracks take place in heat affected zone. Therefore, the mechanical properties of high strength AlZnMgCu0.5 alloy can be degraded in weldment and heat affected zone. Welding process utilizing high density heat source such as electron beam should be developed to reduce pore and hot cracking, whichare usually accompanied by MIG and TIG welding processes. In this work, electron beam welding process were used with or without AlMg4.5Mn as filler material to avoid the degradation of mechanical properties. Mechanical and metallurgical characteristics were also studied in electron beam weldment and heat affected zone. Moreover hot cracking mechanism was also investigated.
In mechanical testing of W-Ni-Pe heavy alloys, the cracks nucleate at W/W interface and propagate through W/ Imatrix interface or through matrix phase together with the cleavage of W grains. The mechanical properties can therefore be improved by control of the interfacial strength and area. In this presentation, some experimental result and techniques on this subject will be reviewed and discussed. The hydrogen embrittlement caused by the hydrogen segregation at interfaces during sintering in an hydrogen atmosphere can be removed by an heat-treattnent in vacuum or in an inert atmosphere. The heat-treatment condition can be estimated by using a diffusion equation for a cylindrical shape. The mechanical properties, in particular the impact property, are degraded by the segregation of non-metallic impurities, such as Sand P. The degradation can be prevented by adding a fourth element, such as La or Ca, active with the non-metallic impurities. The cyclic heat-treatment at usual heat-treattnent tempemture causes the penetration of matrix between W/W grain boundaries and results in remarkable increase in impact energy. This is due to an increase in the area of ductile failure during the impact test. The instability of W/matrix interface casued by addition of Mo or Re can be controlled by using W powders of different size. The increase in the interfacial area in found to be related to the presence of non-equilibrium pure W gmins among W(Mo or Re) solid solution gmins.
REBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes with superior mechanical and electromechanical properties are preferable in applications such as superconducting coils and magnets. The CC tapes should withstand factors that can affect their performance during fabrication and operation of its applications. In coil applications, CC tapes experience different mechanical constraints such as tensile or compressive stresses. Recently, the critical current ($I_c$) degradation of CC tapes used in coil applications due to delamination were already reported. Thermal cycling, coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch among constituent layers, screening current, etc. can induce excessive transverse tensile stresses that might lead to the degradation of $I_c$ in the CC tapes. Also, CC tapes might be subjected to very high magnetic fields that induce strong Lorentz force which possibly affects its performance in coil applications. Hence, investigation on the delamination mechanism of the CC tapes is very important in coiling, cooling, operation and design of prospect applications. In this study, the electromechanical properties of REBCO CC tapes fabricated by reactive co-evaporation by deposition and reaction (RCE-DR) under transversely applied loading were investigated. Delamination strength of the CC tape was determined using the anvil test. The $I_c$ degraded earlier under transverse tensile stress as compared to that under compressive one.
The mechanical properties and durability of concrete pavements may be degraded in extreme situations, resulting in the need for partial repair or total replacement. During the past few decades, there has been a growing body of research on substituting a portion of Portland cement with alternative cementitious materials for improving concrete properties. In this study, two different configurations of powdered and granulated blast furnace slag were implemented, replacing fine aggregates (by 12 wt.%) and Portland cement (by 0, 20, 40, and 60 wt.%) in the making of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) mixes. The specimens were fabricated to investigate the mechanical properties and durability specifications, involving freeze-thaw, salt-scaling, and water absorption resistance. The experimental results indicated that the optimum mechanical properties of RCC mixes could be achieved when 20-40 wt.% of powdered slag was added to concrete mixes containing slag aggregates. Accordingly, the increases in compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths were 45, 50, and 28%, in comparison to the control specimen at the age of 90 days. Also, incorporating 60 wt.% of powdered slag gave rise to the optimum mix plan in terms of freeze-thaw resistance such that a negligible strength degradation was experienced after 300 cycles. In addition, the optimal moisture content of the proposed RCC mixtures was measured to be in the range of 5 to 6.56%. Furthermore, the partial addition of granulated slag was found to be more advantageous than using entirely natural sand in the improvement of the mechanical and durability characteristics of all mixture plans.
In this study, we investigated the effect of thermal aging on mechanical characteristics of Inconel 600 nickel-based alloy. The thermal aging was conducted up to 1000 hours at an atmosphere of $650^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of thermally aged specimens was investigated by an optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). In addition, tensile test (strain rate: 2 mm/min) and micro Vickers hardness test were conducted to evaluate mechanical properties with time. As a result of the experiment, Cr-rich carbide continuously precipitated during thermal aging, leading to the change of the mechanical characteristics and fracture mode. With the increase of aging time, tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness gradually decreased. The fracture mode changed from ductile to brittle with the increase of grain boundary carbide.
In this study, the effect of Nb alloying element on the corrosion fatigue properties of high strength steel is investigated by conducting fatigue experiments under corrosive condition and hydrogen induced condition, potentiodynamic polarization test, tensile test and surface analyses. Nb element is added to enhance the mechanical property of medium carbon steel. This element forms MX-type phases such as carbides and nitrides which are playing an important role in the grain refinement. The grain refinement is one of the effective way to improve mechanical property because both tensile strength and toughness can be improved at the same time. However, MX-type phase precipitates can be a susceptible site to localized corrosion in corrosive environment due to the potential difference between matrix and precipitate. The obtained results showed that Nb-added steel improved corrosion fatigue property by grain refinement. However, it is degraded for hydrogen-induced fatigue property due to Nb, Ti-inclusions acting as a stronger trap.
In most of electrical applications using Bi-2223/Ag HTS tapes, bending and tension stresses are essentially applied to the tape. Therefore, the critical current of the Bi-2223/Ag tape is degraded by increasing the deformation stress, though brittle superconducting filaments are embedded in the reinforced Ag alloy sheath. It is needed to understand bending and tension properties of HTS tapes at room temperature and cryogen to make superconducting magnet, cable and etc. using Bi-2223/Ag HTS tapes. Actually, bending and tension stress applied to the tapes simultaneously, when winding the tapes on former for applications. In this study, the effect of mechanical deformations, bending and tension, on the critical current of Bi-2223/Ag tape was investigated.
The overhead transmission wires operating both at warm temperature and tighten state for a long period of time in a power transmission plant are degraded by air pollution, wind, creep and slip between steel wire and aluminium conductor. The objective of this study is to investigate to investigate the characteristics of fatigue properties with tension and bending loading of a high carbon steel wire. The fatigue behaviors have been carried out by tension-tension, 4 points bending and 3 points bending loading. In the present study, a conventional fatigue strengths between 4 points bending and tension-tension fatigue were determined by Gerber, Sorderberg and Goodmans theory and we investigated S-N diagram for bending and tensile loading.
T. Kanal et al, were studied the superconducting properties in Bi system by mechanical grinding, in which the authors found that the samples ground degraded from the superconducting phases to nonsuperconducting phases. To obtain more information of the practical application in Bi system with high-Tc phase in this paper, these samples mechanically ground and the high-Tc phase properties of grinding powder samples were investigated.
The remaining life estimation for the aged components in power plants as well as chemical plants are very important because mechanical properties of the components are degraded with time of service exposure in the high temperature. Since it is difficult to take specimens from the operating components to evaluate mechanical properties of components, accelerated aging technique are needed to estimate and analyse the material degradation. In the this study, test materials with 4 different degradation levels were prepared by isothermal aging heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. And tensile test, $k_{IC}$ test, hardness test and Scanning Electron Microscope analysis were performed in order to evaluate the degradation of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steels.
