The chemical warfare agents (CWAs) have been developed for offensive or defensive purposes and used as chemical weapons in war and terrorism. The CWAs are exposed to the natural environment, transported through the water system and then eventually contaminate soil and groundwater. Therefore, effective decontamination technology to remediate CWAs are needed. The CWAs are extremely dangerous and prodution is strictly prohibited, therefore, it is difficult to use CWAs even in experimental purpose. In this study, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) was chosen as a model representative CWA because it is a simulant of anti-plant CWAs and one of the major component of agent orange. The optimum degradation conditions such as oxidant:activator ratio were determined. The effects of hydroxylamine and chelating agents such as citric acid (CA), oxalic acid (OA), malic acid (MA), and EDTA addition to increase Fe2+ activation were also investigated. Scavenger experiments using tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) and ethanol confirmed that although both sulfate (SO4•-) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) existed in Fe2+-persulfate system, sulfate radical was the predominant radical. To promote the Fe2+ activator effect, the effect of hydroxylamine as a reducing agent was investigated. In chelating agents assisted Fe2+-persulfate oxidation, the addition of 2 mM of CA and MA enhanced 2,4-D degradation. In contrast, EDTA and OA inhibited the 2,4-D removal due to steric hindrance effect.

This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of adding the microbial inoculants to silage for reducing mycotoxins in rice straw silage. When a single agent of L. plantarum and a mixed agent of L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae were added in rice straw silage contaminated mycotoxins, it had an effect on silage fermentation and fiber degradation as well as mycotoxin reduction. Among the mycotoxins, only ochratoxin A and zearalenone were found in the test sample. Ochratoxin A and zearalenone showed a decreasing trend with the addition of silage inoculants compared to the control groups (38.11±2.22 and 633.67±50.30 ㎍/kg), and there was a significant difference at the mixed agents; 27.78±2.28 and 392.72±25.04 ㎍/kg, respectively (p<0.05). The pH was lower in the single agent and the mixed agent compared to the control (p<0.05). The concentration of lactic acid was higher in the single agent (11.73±0.31 mM) than in the control group (8.18±0.93 mM), and the highest concentration was 16.01±0.88 mM in the mixed agent (p<0.05). Acetic acid and propionic acid were found to be significantly lowered with the addition of silage inoculants (p<0.05). Total VFA was also lower at the addition of silage inoculants than the control group (p<0.05). The rumen in situ dry matter degradation of NDF and ADF was maintained at the highest levels of the mixed agent during the culture period, followed by the single agent and the control group at the lowest level. NDF and ADF degradation showed a significant difference at all time points after 12 and 24 hours of culture, respectively (p<0.05). The study results showed that the silage inoculants had the positive effects on quality increasing of rice straw silage; fermentative charateristics, fiber degradation and mycotoxins reduction. Ochratoxin A and zearalenone were greater reduction by adding bacterial inoculants of silage. Therefore it is considered that L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae will improve the quality and stability with remediation of mycotoxin in silage.
Physicochemical properties of aspalatone (acetylsalicylic acid maltol ester, AM), which has been recently found to have an antithrombotic effect, were studied in terms of solubility, dissolution, partition coefficient (Pc) and stability. The solubility of AM at 37$^{\circ}C$ was about 1.2 mg/ml and the P$_{c}$ value for n-octanol/water and chloroform/water was 11.4 and 382.6, respectively. Dissolution rates of AM at pH 1.2 and 6.8 were more than 80% within 30 min. The degradation of AM followed apparent first-order kinetics, and was dependent on temperature, pH and ionic strength. From the pH-rate profile, the optimal pH was found to be at around 4.0. Half-lives at pH 1.2 and 6.8 were 33.5 and 44.4 hr, respectively. The degradation rate of AM at pH 1.2 was somewhat faster than that of aspirin, but at pH 7.0, the degradation rate of AM was slower than that of aspirin.n.
The limited durability of resin-dentin bonds severely compromises the longevity of composite resin restorations. Resin-dentin bond degradation might occur via degradation of water-rich and resin sparse collagen matrices by host-derived matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). This review article provides overview of current knowledge of the role of MMPs in dentin matrix degradation and four experimental strategies for extending the longevity of resin-dentin bonds. They include: (1) the use of broadspectrum inhibitors of MMPs, (2) the use of cross-linking agents for silencing the activities of MMPs, (3) ethanol wet-bonding with hydrophobic resin, (4) biomimetic remineralization of water-filled collagen matrix. A combination of these strategies will be able to overcome the limitations in resin-dentin adhesion.
This paper presents an efficient speech interactive agent rendering smooth car navigation and Telematics services, by employing embedded automatic speech recognition (ASR), distributed speech recognition (DSR) and text-to-speech (ITS) modules, all while enabling safe driving. A speech interactive agent is essentially a conversational tool providing command and control functions to drivers such' as enabling navigation task, audio/video manipulation, and E-commerce services through natural voice/response interactions between user and interface. While the benefits of automatic speech recognition and speech synthesizer have become well known, involved hardware resources are often limited and internal communication protocols are complex to achieve real time responses. As a result, performance degradation always exists in the embedded H/W system. To implement the speech interactive agent to accommodate the demands of user commands in real time, we propose to optimize the hardware dependent architectural codes for speed-up. In particular, we propose to provide a composite solution through memory reconfiguration and efficient arithmetic operation conversion, as well as invoking an effective out-of-vocabulary rejection algorithm, all made suitable for system operation under limited resources.
In this paper we propose an agent architecture to improve the flexibility of videoconference systems with strategic-INTER knowledge. The proposed architecture achieves more flexibility by selecting dynamically the strategy of QoS (Quality of Service). To select the strategies, the systems have to take into the consideration of the properties of problems occurred on QoS and the status of problem solving process. This architecture is introduced as a part of knowledge base of agent dealing with cooperation between software modules of videoconference systems. We have implemented the architecture and our prototype system shows its capability of flexible problem solving against the QoS degradation, along with other possible problems within the time limitation. We confirmed that the proposed architecture can improve its flexibility of a videoconference system compared to conventional systems.
The purpose of this study was to increase uv-cut ability of cotton, ramie, and rayon fabrics dyed with safflower red colorants. For this purpose, samples treated with uv-cut agent and tannic acid were compared with the untreated samples after ultraviolet(uv)-light exposure in terms of K/S value, color changes(${\Delta}E$), SEM, and tensile strength retention. K/S value rapidly decreased with increasing exposure time, but K/S value of the samples treated with both uv-cut agent and tannic acid decreased less than that of untreated samples. As increasing exposure time, $L^*$ and $b^*$ increased, $a^*$ decreased, and so ${\Delta}E$ increased, indicating less red character and more yellow character in color. This leads to change hue, value and chroma value. But color change of samples treated with both uv-cut agent and tannic acid was less than that of untreated samples. SEM pictures showed a severe degradation by uv exposure in all samples. Tensile strength slowly decreased for 21 days. And after this point, the decreased proceeded more rapidly. Tensile strength retention of the samples treated with uv-cut agent and tannic acid was higher than that of untreated samples.
Iopromide is an X-ray contrast agent that has been detected frequently with high concentration level in surface waters. Structural characterization of degradation products and measurement of degradation efficiency of iopromide by an electron beam irradiation were performed. For the fortified sample with iopromide, electron beam irradiation (UELV-10-10S, klysotrn, 10 MeV, 1 mA and 10 kW) was performed. The chemical structures of I_D_665 and I_D_663, which are degradation products of iopromide, were proposed by interpretation of mass spectra and chromatograms by LC/ESI-MS/MS. The mass fragmentation pathways of mass spectra in tandem mass spectrometry were also proposed. Iopromide was degraded 30.5~98.4% at dose of 0.3~5 kGy, and 97.8~30% in the concentration range $0.5{\sim}100{\mu}g/kg$ at electron beam dose of 0.3 kGy, respectively. Thus, increased degradation efficiency of iopromide by electron beam irradiation was observed with a higher dose of electron beam and lower concentration.
Bovine serum albumin microspheres containing cytarabine were prepared using cross-linking agent, formaldehyde. The shape and the size distribution of them were observed. The shape of them was spherical and the susrface was compact and smooth. The size distribution of them was affected by dispersion forces during emulsfication. The release of cytarabine from albumin microspheres was dependent upon cross-linking time, amount of cross-linking agent and drug/albumin ratio. However, the difference of drug release by the dispersion forces was not great. After release test, the shape of albumin microspheres was nonspherical and the albumin matrix seemed to be a little relaxed. The degradation tests of albumin microspheres by the proteolytic enzyme showed that albumin microspheres were progressively digested according to the cross-linking degree.
Porous carbon from charcoal filled polypropylene composites were prepared and their mechanical properties were evaluated. In preparing the composites, crosslinking agent (sodium benzonate) were used in order to improve the bonding force between matrix and fillers. In this study, the effects of charcoal powder and sodium benzonate concentration on the mechanical properties and interface phenomena on the composites were evaluated. The mechanical properties of composites increased progressively with the decrease of filler loading. In the case of addition of the crosslinking agent into the composite, the mechanical properties were increased and showed maximum value at the 3 wt% concentration of sodium benzonate. According to the result of the TGA, the weight loss of composite according to crosslinking agent was not observed and initial thermal degradation temperature of composite reinforced charcoal was located at $390^{\circ}C$.
