  • In general, thickness of the sublayers under track is designed based on concept of vertical soil reaction value or vertical stiffness. However, this design method cannot take consideration into soil-track interaction under repetitive load, traffic condition and velocity of the train. Furthermore, the reinforced roadbed soils experience complex behavior that cannot be explained by conventional stress-strain relation expressed as soil reaction value k. The reinforced roadbed soils also can produce cumulative permanent deformation under repetitive load caused by train. Therefore new design method for the sublayers under track must be developed that can consider both elastic modulus and permanent deformation. In this study, a new design concept, a rule-of-thumb, is proposed as the form of design monograph that is developed using elastic multi-layer and finite element programs by analyzing stress and deformation in the sublayers with changing the thickness and elastic modulus of the sublayers and also using data obtained from repetitive triaxial test. This new design concept can be applied to design of the reinforced roadbed before developing full version of design methodology that can consider MGT, axial load and the material properties of the layers. The new design monograph allows the user to design the thickness of the reinforced roadbed based on permanent deformation, elastic modulus and MGT.

  • In this paper, reaction of functionally graded (FG) thick nanoplates resting on a viscoelastic foundation to a moving nanoparticle/load is investigated. Nanoplate is assumed to be thick by using second order shear deformation theory and small-scale effects are taken into account in the framework of Eringen's nonlocal theory. Material properties are varied through the thickness using FG models by having power-law, sigmoid and exponential functions for material changes. FG nanoplate is assumed to be on a viscoelastic medium which is modeled using Kelvin-Voight viscoelastic model. Galerkin, state space and fourth-order Runge-Kutta methods are employed to solve the governing equations. A comprehensive parametric study is presetned to show the influence of different parameters on mechanical behavior of the system. It is shown that material variation in conjunction with nonlocal term have a significant effect on the dynamic deformation of nanoplate which could be used in comprehending and designing more efficient nanostructures. Moreover, it is shown that having a viscoelastic medium could play an important role in decreasing these dynamic deformations. With respect to the fresh studies on moving atoms, molecules, cells, nanocars, nanotrims and point loads on different nanosctructures using scanning tunneling microscopes (STM) and atomic force microscopes (AFM), this study could be a step forward in understanding, predicting and controlling such kind of behaviors by showing the influence of the moving path, velocity etc. on dynamic reaction of the plate.

  • The effects of reinforcement on the horizontal and vertical deformations of geosynthetic reinforced retaining walls are investigated under a well-known seismic load (San Jose earthquake, 1955). Retaining walls are designed with internal and external stability (with appropriate factor of safety) and deformation is chosen as the main parameter for describing the wall behavior under seismic load. Retaining walls with various heights (6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 meter) are optimized for geosynthetics arrangement, and modeled with a finite element method. The stress-strain behavior of the walls under a well-known loading type, which has been used by many previous researchers, is investigated. A comparison is made between the reinforced and non-reinforced systems to evaluate the effect of reinforcement on decreasing the deformation of the retaining walls. The results show that the reinforcement system significantly controls the deformation of the top and middle of the retaining walls, which are the critical points under dynamic loading. It is shown that the optimized reinforcement system in retaining walls under the studied seismic loading could decrease horizontal and vertical deformation up to 90% and 40% respectively.

  • Despite a number of advantages of reinforced earth walls over conventional concrete retaining walls, there exit concerns over long-term residual deformation when used as part of permanent structures. In view of these concerns, time-dependant deformation characteristics of geosynthetic reinforced modular block walls under sustained loads were investigated using reduced-scale model tests. The results indicated that a sustained load can yield appreciable magnitude of residual deformation, and that the magnitude of residual deformation depends on the loading characteristic as well as reinforcement stiffness.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a hyperfine maskless writing technique by using the nanoindentation and HF wet etching technique. Indents were made on the surface of Pyrex7740 glass by the hyperfine indentation process with a Berkovich diamond indenter, and they were etched in $50\;wr\%$ HF solution. After etching process, convex structure was obtained due to the deformation-induced hillock phenomena. In this study, effects of indentation process parameters (etching time, normal load, loading .ate, hold-time at the maximum load) on the morphologies of the indented surfaces after isotopic etching were investigated from an angle of deformation energies. Finally, sample characters were written to show the possibility of the application.

  • Hot forging is widely used in the manufacturing of industry machine component. The mechanical, thermal load and thermal softening which are happened by the high temperature in hot forging process. Tool life decreases considerably due to the softening of the surface layer of a tool caused by a high thermal load and long contact time between the tool and billet. Also, tool life is to a large extent limited by wear, heat crack and plastic deformation in hot forging process. These are one of the main factors affecting die accuracy and tool life. That is because hot forging process has many factors influencing tool life, and there was not accurate in-process data. In this research, life prediction of hot forging tool by wear and plastic deformation analysis considering tempering parameter has been carried out for automobile component. The new developed technique in this study for predicting tool life can give more feasible means to improve the tool life in hot forging process.

  • In this paper, 2 kinds of models about bike frame are simulated with static structural analysis. A bike frame with diamond type is compared with another model that Down tube is eliminated from original diamond frame. About both types of models, Property of a material and conditions of restriction & load are the same. This study shows reinforcement effects of a partial frame by adding down tube and impacts generated by applying a load at the frame such as weak points & high stress parts as well as expected deformation. The structural result of this study indicates that the equivalent stress or total deformation decreases by 57.1% or 36.4%, respectively. Also stress concentration sites are leg connecting parts, front/rear wheels fixed region and Max deformation is generated from Seat tube. In conclusion, A Down tube is highly efficient as reinforcement than frame without non down tube. Furthermore, The safety rises in case of reducing top tube thickness and increasing a reinforcement at leg connecting parts or concentration regions.

  • This paper deals with a numerical study on the deformation of a mono tendon anchor head. The anchor head is used to introduce the compression to concrete, and consists of wedges and a head. All kinematics, material and contact nonlinearity are included in the precise analysis of a mono tendon anchor head. A numerical study on a mono tendon anchor head is performed to investigate effects of friction and eccentricity of load by ABAQUS. From the numerical results, it is verified that the deformation of a mono tendon anchor head is affected by characteristics of materials, boundary condition between wedge and anchor head, eccentricity of load, etc.
