The high strain-rate dynamic plastic behavior of Fe-X%Mn alloys was investigated. The strain rate did not have an effect when tested under quasi-static strain rates($2{\times}10^{-3}/sec$ and $2{\times}10^{-1}/sec$). However, the true stress increased at all strain levels when the strain rate increased to $6{\times}10^3/sec$. Based on the experimental results, an constitution equation to calculate the dynamic strength for strain rates over $10^4/sec$ was determined. The Fe-5%Mn alloy containing athermal ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ martensite initially did not show work hardening. The work hardening increased with Mn content showing a maximum at 20% Mn. The high work hardening of Fe-20%Mn and Fe-30%Mn alloys appears to be closely related not only to the initial amounts of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite but to the strain induced transformation (${\gamma}{\rightarrow}{\varepsilon}$ and ${\varepsilon}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}^{\prime}$) occurring during each stages of deformation.
In general, seismic isolators which are made of laminated rubber and shim plate have characteristics of complex hysteretic behavior. When shear deformation of the seismic isolator is small, the isolator hassimple hysteretic almost bi-linear behabior. But on large shear deformation hardening effects may occur. This paper proposes a moldeling method of the seimic isolator with modified hysteretic bi-linear model which can consider the hardening effects. From the results of the seismic analyses of the isolated system it is shown that the responses are singificantly reduced compared with those of the non-isolated system. The modified hysteretic bi-linear model of the isolator gives larger ZPA(zero period acceleration) than those of the simple hysteretic bi-linear model and the equivalunt spring-damper model.
This study presents cyclic stress-strain and tensile test results at room temperature (RT) and 316℃ using cold-worked TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals. By comparing the cyclic hardening/softening behavior and failure cycle of cold-worked materials with those of irradiated austenitic stainless steels, the feasibility of simulating the irradiation effect on cyclic deformation and failure behaviors of TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals was investigated. It was found that, in the absence of strain-induced martensite trasformation, cold-working could properly simulate the change in cyclic hardening/softening behavior of TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals due to neutron irradiation. It was also recognized that cold-working could adequately simulate the reduction in failure cycles of TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals due to neutron irradition in the low-cycle fatigue region.
In sheet metal forming numerical analysis, the strain hardening equation has a significant effect on calculation results, especially in the field of spring-back. This study introduces the Kim-Tuan strain hardening model. This model represents sheet material behavior over the entire strain hardening range. The proposed model is compared to other well known strain hardening models using a series of uniaxial tensile tests. These tests are performed to determine the stress-strain relationship for Al6016-T4, DP980, and CP Ti sheets. In addition, the Kim-Tuan model is used to integrate the CP Ti sheet strain hardening equation in ABAQUS analysis to predict spring-back amount in a bending test. These tests highlight the improved accuracy of the proposed equation in the numerical field. Bending tests to evaluate prediction accuracy are also performed and compared with numerical analysis results.
This paper is concerned with forming of Al-Zn-Mg-Sc aluminum alloy bolts, focusing on the effects of heat treatment and age-hardening on the formability and ductile damage evolution. Both experimental and finite element studies were performed. From the experiments, it is observed that the heat treatment or the normalization of Al-Zn-Mg-Sc aluminum alloy increases its formability dramatically resulting in successful bolt forming, while the effects of age-hardening at room temperature on the stress-strain relationship and formability are not very critical. Deformation characteristics such as distribution of effective stress and strain, material flow, and ductile damage evolution during bolt forming are examined using a commercial finite element package, Deform-2D. It should be noted that the extrusion load predicted by the finite element method matches well the experiment results. The finite element predictions on the deformation characteristics support the experimental observations such as fracture of bolt head flange, material flow, and distribution of hardness.
High temperature deformation behavior of a Ti-Al intermetallic compound has been investigated. Specimens with a near gamma and a lamella structures were obtained by performing heat treatment at 1200 and 1330$^{\circ}C$, respectively, for 24 hr and stabilized at 900$^{\circ}C$ for 4 hr followed by air cooling. A series of load relaxation tests has been conducted on these samples at temperatures ranging from 850 to 950$^{\circ}C$ to construct flow curves in the strain rate range from 10$\^$-6//s to 10$\^$-3//s. Strain hardening was observed even at the temperature of 950$^{\circ}C$ in both the near gamma and the lamella structures. Further aging treatment for 12 hr at test temperatures has found to cause no softening in both microstructures.
A novel indentation theory is proposed by examining the data from the incremental plasticity theory based finite element analyses. First the optimal data acquisition location is selected, where the strain gradient is the least and the effect of friction is negligible. This data acquisition point increases the strain range by a factor of five. Numerical regressions of obtained data exhibit that strain hardening exponent and yield strain are the two main parameters which govern the subindenter deformation characteristics. The new indentation theory successfully provides the stress-strain curve with an average error less than 5%.

This paper presents an experimental study on the repair performance of sprayed engineered cementitious composites(ECC) serving as a repair material. Sprayable ECC, which exhibit tensile strain-hardening behavior in the hardened state and maintain sprayable properties in the fresh state, have been developed by using a parallel control of micromechanical design and rheological process design. The effectiveness of sprayable ECC in providing durable repaired structures was assessed by spraying the ECC and testing them for the assessment. The experimental results revealed that, when sprayed ECC were used as a repair material, both load carrying capacity and ductility represented by the deformation capacity at peak load of the repaired flexural beams were obviously increased compared to those of commercial prepackaged mortar(PM) repaired beams. The significant enhancement in the energy absorption capacity and tight crack width control of the ECC repair system treated with wet-mix spraying process suggests that sprayed ECC can be effective in extending the service life of rehabilitated infrastructures.

Magnesium alloy sheets in room temperature have unusual mechanical properties such as high in-plane anisotropy/asymmetry of yield stress and hardening behavior. In this paper, the continuum plasticity models considering the plastic behavior of AZ31B Mg alloy sheet were derived. A new hardening law based on modified two-surface model was developed to consider the general stress-strain response of metals including Bauschinger effect, transient behavior and the unusual asymmetry. Three deformation modes observed during the continuous tension/compression tests were mathematically formulated with simplified relations between the state of deformation and their histories. To include the anisotropy and asymmetry of the initial yield stress, the Drucker-Prager's pressure dependent yield surface was modified by adding anisotropic constants.
