  • In this paper, Timoshenko and Euler-Bernoulli beam theories(EB-beam) are used, and Fast Fourier Transformation(FFT) analysis is then employed to extract their natural frequencies using both analytical approach and Co-rotational plane beam(CR-beam) EDISON program. EB-beam is used to analyze a spring-mass system with a single degree of freedom. Sinusoidal force with various frequencies and constant magnitude are applied to tip of each beam. After the oscillatory tip response is observed in EB-beam, it decreases and finally converges to the so-called 'steady-state.' The decreasing rate of the tip deflection with respect to time is reduced when the forcing frequency is increased. Although the tip deflection is found to be independent of the excitation frequency, it turns out that time to reach the steady state response is dependent on the forcing frequency.

  • In this study, a flexible disk grinding process is applied in order to produce high precision product. A new model was developed considering feed motion along horizontal and vertical direction. Different types of feed speed variation was tested with respect to distinct process stages in order to achieve flat surface. It was observed that highest order polynomial form for both horizontal and vertical feed speed variation among the proposed categories produced surface close to flat one. Disk deflection trend during the process was visualized confirming the proposed scheme. Cutting force and VRR(volume removal rate) was observed as an aid to process planning.

  • A flexible disk grinding process model has been implemented with varying disk orientation with respect to workpiece surface along with variable feed rate. Before implementing arbitrary disk orientation and translation, disk angle and feed rate variation have been implemented. The disk angle was changed with constant angular velocity only in the entrance stage. The effect of the variable feed rate was added to the geometric schematic. The feed rate was changed either from the entrance stage or from the between edges stage and process performance was evaluated. Effect of changing both angle end feed rate has been also analyzed. Disk trend showing actual disk deflection has also been visualized.

  • A constant volume combustion chamber is used to investigate the flame kernel development of gasoline air mixtures under various ignition systems, ignition energies and spark plugs. Three kinds of ignition systems are designed and assembled, and the ignition energy is controlled by the variation of the dwell time. Several kinds of spark plugs are also tested. The velocity of flame propagation is measured by a laser deflection method, and the combustion pressure is analyzed by the heat release rate and the mass fraction burnt. The results represent that as the ignition energy is increased by enlarging either dwell time or spark plug gap, the heat release rate and the mass fraction burnt are increased. The electrodes materials and shapes influence the flame kernel development by changing he transfer efficiency of electrical energy to chemical energy. The diameter of electrodes also influences the heat release rate and the burnt mass fraction.

  • The Surface, generated by end milling operation, is deteriorated by tool runout, vibration, friction, tool deflection, etc. Especially in cornering cut, surface accuracy is usually determined by varying cutting forces, which causes tool deflections. Cutting conditions like feed rate is usually kept constant during machining a part, which causes dimensional error in severe cutting. Cornering cut is a typical example of deterioration of surface accuracy when constant feed rate is applied. Therefore it becomes important to develop NC post processor module to determine optimal cutting conditions in various cutting situations. In this paper, cutting force is predicted in cornering cut with flat end mill and feed rate is determined by constraining constantly resultant force. Also some control characteristics of CNC machining center are evaluated.

  • We performed a dynamic characterization of passive flow-rate regulators, which compensate for inlet pressure variation and maintain a constant flow rate for precise liquid control in microfluidic systems. To measure the flow rate for a short time, much less than the period of the dynamic inlet pressure, we use the particle image velocimetry (PIV) method. DI water containing fluorescent beads with a $0.7-{\mu}m$ diameter was supplied to the flow-rate regulators, and two successive images of the particles were taken by a pulse laser and a fluorescent microscope to measure the flow velocity. For a dynamic inlet pressure of frequency 60 Hz, the flow velocity was constant with an average of 0.194 ${\pm}$ 0.014 m/s as the inlet pressure varied between 20 kPa to 50 kPa. The flow-rate regulators provided a constant flow rate of $5.82{\pm}0.29\;{\mu}l/s$ in the frequency range of the inlet pressure from 1 Hz to 60 Hz.

  • Silicon nitride based ceramics reinforced with 3wt% Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$ whisker was prepared by tape casting to investigate the effect of microstructure on erosion behaviors. Hardness and fracture toughness were measured with prepared specimens. A gas blast type erosion tester was used to examine the erosion behavior of the specimens with different impact directions and angles. The erosion rate increases with increasing impact angle. Erosion rate of the silicon nitride ceramics also depends on the grain orientations, The erosion rate was lowered when impaction direction was parallel to the grain orientation This result was explained by the crack deflection and bridging due to the grain orientation.

  • Cucumbers being living biological materials are generally vulnerable to external forces, especially, bending force during the processes, because they have usually longish shape. Understanding the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of cucumber is important to analyze various characteristics which might be helpful in determining design parameters for the processing equipment such as sorting, packaging and transporting machine. The objectives of this study were to determine ultimate bending strength, deflections, and hysteresis losses for the cucumbers from the bending tests. Within the range of loading rate from 20 to 100mm/min, the ultimate bending strength of the cucumber samples were 525-630kPa at the Gyeousalicheongjang and the Baekdadagi, and 476~618kPa at the Cheongjangmadi, respectively, but the ultimate bending deflection ratio of the Cheongjangmadi showed the highest value among the tested samples. The effect of loading rate on the physical properties of the cucumber was relatively significant, all considered physical properties and degree of elasticity of the cucumber increased with the loading rate, but the hysteresis loss decreased with it.

  • The present article shows how the fracture strength of single crystal silicon chips, which are generally used as semiconductor devices, is influenced by loading rate variation during a 3-point bending test. It was found that the fracture strength of the silicon chips slightly increases up to 4% with increasing loading rate for loading rates lower than 20 mm/min. Meanwhile, the fracture strength of the chips hardly increases with increase of loading rate to levels higher than 40 mm/min. However, there was an abrupt transition in the fracture strength within a loading rate range of 20 mm/min to 40 mm/min. This work explains through microscopic examination of the fracture surface of all test chips that such a big transition is related to the deflection of crack propagation direction from the (011) [${\bar{1}}00$] system to the (111) [${\bar{2}}11$] system in a particular loading rate (i.e. from 20 mm/min to 40 mm/min).

  • An inverse self-iterative procedure is developed to determine layer moduli which are significant for the structural evaluation of pavements in developing rational and analytical rehabilitation technique. Falling weight deflectometer(FWD) is adopted as a non-destructive testing(NDT)device. The layer elastic theory is used to interpret NDT data. The theoretical deflection basins of pavement structures obtained by full factorial design are used for a parametric study on the characteristics of deflection basins and regression analyses. Regression equations to estimate layer moduli of flexible pavements are proposed through the regression analyses of theoretical deflection basins. The relationships between the rate of change of moduli and deflections are developed for the efficient iteration. An inverse self-iterative procedure to ensure the accuracy of the layer moduli is proposed. Validity and applicability of the developed procedure are verified through various numerical model tests.
