  • Thelazia callipaeda, a parasitic nematode that causes thelaziosis in various mammals, including humans, is known to be endemic in Korea. However, life cycle-related information on the parasite, primarily from human infection and a few dog cases, is limited. This study reports additional cases of T. callipaeda infections in dogs from both rural and urban areas in Korea, indicating the potential for transmission to humans and other animals. We collected 61 worms from 8 infected dogs from Paju and Cheongju Cities and observed their morphological characteristics under a light microscope. The findings indicate that T. callipaeda infections in animals in Korea may be underestimated and are distributed close to human environments. Our results contribute to the growing knowledge of the reservoir hosts of T. callipaeda in Korea and highlight the importance of continued surveillance and research to prevent and control this emerging zoonotic disease.

  • Numerous nonoperative treatments have been used to reduce pain and improve the clinical outcomes of patients with foot and ankle disorders. Among these treatments, hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections have been used increasingly. This review analyzes the recent literature reporting the efficacy and indications for hyaluronic acid and PRP injections. Hyaluronic acid and PRP can be used safely as adjuncts. Hyaluronic acid injections have shown efficacy and have a promising role as an adjuvant treatment method. In addition, its indication has expanded to various foot and ankle diseases over osteoarthritis. On the other hand, the efficacy of PRP injection has not yet been clarified, and the lack of standardization of procedures for the preparation and administration of PRP makes it difficult to establish definitive treatment indications.

  • β-ureidopropionase (β-UP) is an enzyme that catalyzes the final step in the pyrimidine degradation pathway, which converts β-ureidopropionate and β-ureidoisobutyrate into β-alanine and β-aminoisobutyrate, respectively. β-UP deficiency (UPB1D; OMIM # 613161) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive inborn error disease caused by a mutation in the UPB1 gene on chromosome 22q11. To date, approximately 40 cases of UPB1D have been reported worldwide, including one case in Korea. The clinical manifestations of patients with UPB1D are known to be diverse, with a very wide range of manifestations being previously reported; these manifestations include completely asymptomatic, urogenital and colorectal anomalies, or severe neurological involvement, including global developmental delay, microcephaly, early onset psychomotor retardation with dysmorphic features, epilepsy, optic atrophy, retinitis pigmentosa, severely delayed myelination, and cerebellar hypoplasia. Currently, diagnosis of UPB1D is challenging as neurological manifestations, MRI abnormalities, and biochemical analysis for pyrimidine metabolites in the urine, plasma, and cerebrospinal fluid also need to be confirmed by UPB1 gene mutations. Overall, treatment of patients with UPB1D is palliative as there is still no definitive curative treatment available.

  • Screening and early diagnosis of cancer is important. Screening lead to detect disease earlier, and earlier treatment of disease cause to yield a better outcome than treatment at the onset of symptoms. Some studies suggest that gastric cancer screening may be associated with a reduced risk of mortality from gastric cancer, although there are no definitive data from large controlled trials. Regular colorectal cancer screening or testing is one of the most powerful weapons for preventing colorectal cancer, because some polyps, or growths can be found and removed before they have the chance to turn into cancer. Screening can also result in finding colorectal cancer early, when it is highly curable. In conclusion, to increase utilization of screening is important to decrease gastric and colorectal cancer morbidity and mortality.

  • Various project delivery methods have been utilized by owners over the years to maximize project performance. The design-build delivery method is being increasingly used due to the advantages it can offer to an engineering construction industry. Numerous studies have advocated the use of design/build over the traditional design/bid/build delivery approach. This study represents comprehensive analysis of 40 projects from the construction industry and shows that design/build method may not provide all the benefits to project performance. This study found timesaving was a definitive advantage of design/build project delivery, but the positive effects of cost changes was not convincing. Based on the results of the study, the project management expertise and experience of the contractor may have a greater impact on project performance outcomes than focusing on project delivery strategy only.

  • Over the decades, the treatment of the esophageal cancer has been debated. Multimodal therapy is a important keystone in advanced esophageal cancer. Neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy is now known to provide advantages for treating stage II and stage III esophageal squamous cell cancer and can also be considered for the esophageal adenocarcinoma. Definitive chemoradiation therapy results in long-term survival compared with surgery alone. This review aims to provide recent consensus recommendations based on the data and literatures.

  • Purpose To investigate the impact of Nosa Ki Jung-jin on the development of Sasang Constitutional Medicine by Dongmu Lee Je-ma. Objectives and Methods To establish the correlation between Nosa and Dongmu through an analysis of 『Nosajip(蘆沙集)』 and 『Nosaseonsaengyeonwonrok(盧沙先生淵源錄)』. Conclusion 1. While it is not definitive to assert that Lee Mupyeong, referenced in the 'SongLeemupyeongBukgwiseo(送李務平北歸序)' of 『Nosajip』, is Dongmu, there exists a strong probability that he is indeed Dongmu. 2. Dongmu Lee Je-ma's name does not appear among the disciples listed in 『Nosaseonsaengyeonwonrok』, and the 'SongLeemupyeongBukgwiseo' is only found in the third edition of 『Nosajip』. 3. It is challenging to attribute Dongmu's development of Sasang Constitutional Medicine solely to his exposure to Nosa's teachings during his youth.

  • Currently, there is no definitive regulation for the appropriate frequency of data sampling in water distribution networks, yet it plays a crucial role in the efficient operation of these systems. This study proposes a new methodology for determining the optimal frequency of data acquisition in water distribution networks. Based on the decomposition of signals using harmonic series, this methodology has been validated using actual data from water distribution networks. By analyzing 12 types of data collected from two points, it was demonstrated that utilizing the factors and cumulative periodograms of harmonic series enables similar accuracy at lower data acquisition frequencies compared to the original signals. • Purpose: We evaluated the failure pattern of the celiac axis, gastric lymph node, and treatment outcome in the upper and mid-esophageal region of cancer patients treated by definitive radiotherapy, except when treating the celiac axis and gastric lymph node for treatment volume, retrospectively. Materials and Methods: The study constituted the evaluation 108 patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer receiving radiotherapy or a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy at Chonbuk National University Hospital from January 1986 to December 2006. In total, 82 patients treated by planned radiotherapy, except when treating the celiac axis and gastric lymph node for treatment volume, were analysed retrospectively. The study population consisted of 78 men and 2 women(mean age of 63.2 years). In addition, 51 patients received radiotherapy alone, whereas 31 patients received a combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The primary cancer sites were located in the upper portion(17 patients), and mid portion(65 patients), respectively. Further, the patients were in various clinical stages including T1N0-1M0(7 patients), T2N0-1M0(18 patients), T3N0-1M0(44 patients) and T4N0-1M0(13 patients). The mean follow up period was 15 months. Results: The various treatment outcomes included complete response(48 patients), partial response(31 patients) and no response(3 patients). The failure patterns of the lymph node were comprised of the regional lymph node(23 patients) and the distance lymph node which included celiac axis and gastric lymph node(13 patients). However, metastasis was not observed in the regional and distant lymph node in 10 patients, whereas 36 patients were not evaluated. Furthermore, of the 13 patients who developed celiac axis and gastric lymph node metastases, 3 were in stage T1N0-1M0 and 10 were in stage T2-4N0-1M0. A complete response appeared in 12 patients, whereas a partial response appeared in 1 patient. The mean survival time of the patients who appeared for regional and distant lymph node metastasis was 14.4 and 7.0 months, respectively. Conclusion: In locally advanced esophageal cancer patients, who were treated by definitive radiotherapy without celiac axis and gastric lymph node irradiation, the distant lymph node metastasis rate was high and the overall survival rate was lower compared to the regional lymph node metastasis. The incidence of regional and distant lymph node metastasis was high in patients who appeared beyond clinical stage T2 and received radiotherapy alone.
