  • This study aimed to investigate flow of defense qi(衛氣) through the relationship among the collateral meridians(絡脈), Pyobon(標本), Kika(氣街) and Geungyul(根結). The nutrient qi(營氣) and defense qi have a same origin and are transformed from the food and drink(水穀), the nutrient qi flows in the meridian(經脈) and the defense qi flows outside of the meridian. The defense qi flows in the collateral meridians where meridians divide into smaller ones. The beginnig of the collateral meridian division is called Bon(本) and the finishing point is called Pyo(標). The defense qi flows from Pyo(標) to outside of the collateral meridian which is called Kika and then flows to skins(皮膚) and muscles (肌肉). The defense qi enters the meridian at Geun(根) and it joins the other qi within the meridian at Gyul(結). In this study, we suggest that the collateral meridian, Pyobon, Kika and Geungyul are continuos pathways where the defense qi circulates.

  • J$\bar{i}$n ji$\acute{e}$(根結) has been recognized as one of a meridian pathway. If you want to study a defense qi(衛氣) and nutrient qi(營氣)'s nature, function and operation, you could find a relationship of J$\bar{i}$n ji$\acute{e}$(根結) and the defense qi(衛氣). We proposed that, especially, J$\bar{i}$n ji$\acute{e}$(根結) has got a close relationship with a operation of the defense qi(衛氣). The ji$\acute{e}$(結) of three yang(三陽) located in ears and eyes, that are a starting point of the defense qi(衛氣) operation in the daytime and a one of five sense organs(五官). Gin, Liu, Zou and Ru (根, 溜, 注, 入) of the three yang(三陽) distinguished between the three yang(三陽) in the extremities. and in the symptoms of a disease of the three yang(三陽) on the bolt - leaf - hanges(關闔樞) theory, Greater yang(太陽) is related to the skin and flesh, Yang brightness(陽明) is related to the flesh and Lesser yang(少陽) is related to the muscle or bone. These skin, flesh, muscle and bone belonged to the five bodies(五體). The five bodies(五體) have relationship with the defense qi(衛氣)'s operation and function part. The ji$\acute{e}$(結) of three yin(三陰) located in neck, chest and abdomen. If we could catched the concepts on the ji$\acute{e}$(結) of three yin(三陰) and The Gin, Liu, Zou, Ru and ji$\acute{e}$(根, 溜, 注, 入, 結) position of three yang(三陽) altogether, we could suggested the theory of the entire area completed in the surface of body. so the defense qi(衛氣)'s protecting function of the whole body surface is achieved. In the symptoms of a disease of the three yin(三陰)'s the bolt - leaf - hanges(關闔樞) theory, greater yin(太陰) and reverting yin(厥陰)'s symptoms indicates the defense qi(衛氣)'s main action of a chest and abdomen. And lesser yin(少陰)' symptoms is about a vessle, that is not to mention on the five bodies(五體) of the three yang(三陽)'s symptoms, so here is mentioned the relationship of the defense qi(衛氣) and the five bodies(五體) strengthened. In the "J$\bar{i}$n ji$\acute{e}$ chapter(根結編) of Lin Shu(靈樞)", as the meridians of the foot (足經) was described, except the meridians of the hand(手經), it is reasonable to infer that the defense qi (衛氣) is relevant to the meridians of the foot(足經) than the meridians of the hand(手經).

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to modernize Nutrient Qi(營氣) and Defense Qi(衛氣) from the point of view of Visceral Body and Somatic Body. Methods: Investigate the areas of body and function of Nutrient Qi(營氣) and Defense Qi(衛氣) recorded in the 『HuangdiNeijing(黃帝內經)』 and 『Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)』. And investigate Visceral Body and Somatic Body that anatomical structure is divided according to function based on the book 『Life and Rhythm』. Results: Nutrient Qi(營氣) works to nourish the body such as viscera and bowels in the meridian. Defense Qi(衛氣) works to protect the body such as skin, limb joint, eye outside the meridian. The human body is divided into Visceral Body called a vegetable organ and Somatic Body called an animal organ. Visceral body is the organ that manages "nutrition-reproductive" and is divided into the intestine(腸管), blood vessels(血管), and the nephridium(腎管). Somatic Body is an organ that manages 'sensory-motion' and is divided into a three-layer structure: the outer layer covering the body surface, the nerve layer connecting the outer layer and the muscle layer, and the muscle layer controling contraction and movement. Conclusions: It is estimated that Nutrient Qi(營氣) is similar to Visceral Body, and Defense Qi(衛氣) is similar to Somatic Body.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to research the relations between the Renying pulse and Qikou pulse diagnosis(人迎氣口脈診法) and the Chong vessel(衝脈) based on Yin and Yang(陰陽). Methods : We set up locations of the Renying pulse and the Qikou pulse as ST9(Renying pulse) and LU9(Qikou pulse) respectively. Several medical texts and papers were examined from the ancient to modern periods, in which the relations between the Renying and Qikou pulse diagnosis(人迎氣口脈診法) and the Chong vessel(衝脈) were analyzed based on Yin and Yang(陰陽). Results & Conclusions : The Chong vessel(衝脈) goes around the whole body and its dysfuction can be determined at pulsating sites. Also the Chong vessel(衝脈) supplies Source Qi(原氣) to the Stomach where it generates Nutrient Qi(營氣) and Defense Qi (衛氣). Due to the Lung's function that balances Nutrient Qi(營氣) and Defense Qi(衛氣), the balance between Yin and Yang is accomplished. This Yin-Yang balance can be confirmed through pulse diagnosis of the Renying pulse and Qikou pulse(人迎氣口脈診法).

  • Objective : I would like to determine the main factors, in other words, the subjects that are responsible for febrile paroxysm and how they interact at the time of onset, based on the "Discourse on Hak(瘧)" chapter of "Huangdi Neijing(黃帝內經)". Methods : First, the pathological mechanism of the paroxysm was examined as described in the text. Then the subjects in question were analyzed based on the contents of the text. Result : 1. Febrile paroxysm happens when the three factors coincide at the Fengfu(風府). The three elements are as follows: first defense qi(衛氣), second latent qi(伏邪) and third, external pathogen(新邪). 2. Fengfu(風府) is not a specific point, but a region which external pathogen(新邪) passes through during which the defense qi is deficient. Conclusion : Febrile paroxysm is not caused by either an internal pathogen or an external pathogen, but the interaction between the three elements of the internal and external pathogens and the condition of defense qi. Moreover, the site, Fengfu(風府), which the disease is manifested is not a specific point but a more general region where the pathogenic qi has invaded while defense qi has weakened.

  • After studying the cause and mechanism of the itching with the perspective of chronic medical books including Neijing, and the annotators, the conclusions are as follows. 1. The itching, which has correlation with the heart, is the deficiency symptom(虛症). It is generated when the lung-metal(肺金) is infected by the fire pathogen(火邪) and developed to depression(鬱), because of the heart fire flaming upward of circuit year(歲火太過). The treatment is to make metal depression scatter(金鬱泄之). 2. The itching occurs between the dermis(膚) and the epidermis(皮). 3. The itching generates when the excess of yang exuberance(熱盛極) precede the transmission of the wind-heats(風熱), the wind-cold(風寒), and the wind-dampness(風濕). It causes the blood deficiency(血虛) and the blood stasis(血瘀) because of the skin dryness. 4. The itching usually generates during summer, causes the body fever(身熱) and the dermis pain(膚痛). When it becomes worse, it causes generalized itching and vesicles at the whole body(浸淫). 5. The itching is related to the spirit(魄), which works in unconsciousness and the movement of defense qi(衛氣) in night.

  • Objectives : This study aims to summarize Tang Zong-hai's Qi transformation theory of the Six meridians through his book "Shanghanlun Qianzhubuzheng傷寒論淺注補正" where he integrated Western anatomy with the Qi transformation theory of East Asian Medicine to interpret Zhang Zhong Jing's "Shanghanlun(傷寒論)". The objective is to assist clinical application. Methods : Focusing on the contents of disease of the six meridians in the "傷寒論淺注補正", Tang's theories on the function of Zangfu(臟腑), Opening-Closing-Pivot(關闔樞), Inter-communication of Zangfu(臟腑相通), the Twelve Meridians(十二經脈) from his other publication "中西匯通醫經精義" were examined and related to in the process of explaining Qi transformation theory in detail. Results : 1. The Qi transformation function of the Taiyang meridian is related to "膀胱者, 氣化則能出" where the Small Intestine and Bladder inter-communicate. 2. The Qi transformation function of the Yangming meridian is related to the control of dryness and dampness through the Qi transformation of "陽明不從標本, 從乎中." 3. The Qi transformation function of the Shaoyang meridian is related to the Life-Fire function of the Triple Energizer-Gallbladder-Pericardium coalition through "少陽屬腎." 4. The Qi transformation function of the Taiyang meridian refers to the Heart Fire nurturing the Spleen Earth by creating 膏油 through veins. 5. The Qi transformation function of the Shaoyin meridian is related to the controlling of the Nutrient Qi(營氣) and Defense Qi(衛氣) through '心主血脈, 腎主元氣.' 6. The Qi transformation function of the Jueyin meridian is related to the ability of 和風 which results from '陰盡陽生' to harmonize and control the balance of Water Coldness(水冷) and Fire Heat(火熱). Conclusions : Tang's Qi Transformation Theory of the Six Meridians is his key theory explained from the perspective of Qi transformation of disease in the six meridians of "Shanghanlun", closely related to basic theories such as theory of Zang form(臟象學說), Opening-Closing-Pivot(關闔樞), Inter-communication of Zangfu(臟腑相通), the Twelve Meridians(十二經脈) of East Asian Medicine.

  • Objective : Malaria(瘧疾) is a disease that's main symptom is paroxysm - a cyclical occurrence of sudden coldness followed by rigor and then fever. Since the introduction of the cause and mechanism of malaria(瘧疾) in the "Suwen(素問)", including Cold malaria(寒瘧), Warm malaria(溫瘧), Heat malaria(癉瘧) and Wind malaria(風瘧), there has been over 20 different kinds of malaria, each of which are introduced in multiple medical texts. Method : Through comparison between "Suwen(素問)" and other medical texts, the categories, causes and mechanisms of malaria can be analysed and organized to overview the whole feature of it. Results & Conclusion : External pathogens of malaria(瘧疾) are wind(風), cold(寒), summerheat (暑), dampness(濕), miasmic toxin(瘴), pestilence(疫), ghost(鬼). Internal pathogens of malaria(瘧疾) are dietary irregularities(飮食不節), overexertion and fatigue(勞倦), phlegm(痰), seven emotion(七情). Malaria can be categorized into four groups according to the pathological mechanism that leads to paroxysm. They are latency of disease(伏氣), external contraction(外感), internal damage(內傷), and combination of disease(合病). Malaria-Paroxysm(瘧疾發作) occurs when the three following factors collide strongly : defense qi(衛氣), latent qi(伏邪) and external pathogen(新邪). When collision of the three factors takes place in the interior(裏), the body experiences chills. When it takes place in the exterior(表), the body experiences fever. The cyclical occurrence of Malaria-Paroxysm follows the circulation of defense qi.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to compare hair and alopecia of Korean Medicine with those of western medicine. Methods : We studied relationships between hair and essense(精), qi(氣), blood(血), five vicera(五臟) and meridians(經絡) through literature review about hair and alopecia. We compared Korean medicine with western medicine on physiology of hair and treatment of alopecia based on the study. Results & Conclusion : 1. Congenital essense(先天之精) is related with genetic factor and acquired essence(後天之精) is connected with nutritional factor. Defending function of Defense qi(衛氣) is related with immune reaction and qi stagnation(氣鬱) is associated with stress reaction. Atrophy of vascular tissues observed in alopecia scalp means deep relationship between blood(血) and alopecia, further deficiency of blood can cause telogen effluvium. 2. Kidney qi(腎氣) is related with inhibiting combination of Androgen receptor and Dihydrotestosterone(DHT) or activating hair growth factior. Pi(脾) is connected with alopecia seborrheica caused by damp-heat(濕熱) and alopecia areata caused by excessive prudence(思慮過度). Heart(心) is associated with atrophy in vascular tissue of scalp and liver(肝) is connected with metabolism. 3. Armpit hair and pubic hair as secondary sex characteristics are realated with Yangming Meridian(陽明經) and beard and hair at crown part where Type II $5{\alpha}$-reductase is activated much are associated with Taiyang Meridian(太陽經). 4. Juglandis Semen pharmacopuncture and Ganoderma lucidum pharmacopucture have better effects on inhibit $5{\alpha}$-reductase than Finasteride. Minoxidil and PRP are similar with promoting blood flow and removing stasis(活血祛瘀). Seven-star needling(七星針) is similar with microneedling. 5. Alopecia can be caused by due to lack of circulation Views we need solution to improve circulation coincide in opinion with Korean Medicine and Western medicine.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to research the Left-Renying and Right-Qikou pulse diagnosis. Methods : We set up locations of the Renying pulse(人迎脈) and the Qikou pulse(氣口脈) on left hand and right hand. On the basis of the medical texts and papers, we researched the relations between the Left-Renying and Right-Qikou pulse diagnosis and the etiological factors(病因), background of appearance of the Left-Renying and Right-Qikou pulse diagnosis, and practical use of medical practitioners of many generations to the Left-Renying and Right-Qikou pulse diagnosis. Results & Conclusions : The Left-Renying and Right-Qikou pulse diagnosis is a method to diagnosis the etiological factors, while it could also be assumed as a tool to apply herbal medicine. This assumption could be made based on the seventh volume of 『Maijing(脈經)』 of Wang Shuhe(王叔和). Chen Wuze(陳無擇) emphasized its function to distinguish etiological factors in 『Sanyinjiyibingzhengfanglun(三因極一病證方論)』, as did Li Dongyuan(李東垣) in 『Neiwaishangbianhuolun(內外傷辨惑論)』. Meanwhile, the connection between Left-Renying and Right-Qikou pulse diagnosis and Zangfu(臟腑) seems to have first been made in 『Maiyu(脈語)』 of Wu Kun(吳昆), while 『Zhenjiazhengyan(診家正眼)』 of Li Zhongzi(李中梓) shows traces of progress since the 『Maiyu』.
