The artificial upwelling of deep seawater increases primary production. This study conducted a lab-scale experiment to investigate the growth of phytoplankton with the mixing ratio of deep and surface seawater. The chlorophyll content in the sample of pure deep seawater was highest, regardless of the phytoplankton groups. Nutrients contained in the deep seawater positively influenced the growth of phytoplankton. The optimum mixture to apply in an artificial upwelling system was a 1:1 ratio of deep and surface seawater. An experiment considering other environmental conditions, such as luminance and specific gravity, should be performed.
In order to examine the effects of deep seawater (mesopelagic water in the broad sense) on the growth of macroalgae, the growth and nutrient uptake (nitrate and phosphate) of Ulva sp. (Ulvophyceae, Chlorophyta) were investigated by cultivation in deep seawater (taken from 687 m depth at Yaizu, central Japan, in August 2001), surface seawater (taken from 24 m depth), and a combination of the two. Culture experiments were carried out in a continuous water supply system and an intermittent water supply system, in which aerated 500-mL flasks with 4 discs of Ulva sp. (cut sections of ca. 2 $cm_2$) were cultured at 20$^{\circ}C$ water temperature, 100 $\mu$mol photons $m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ light intensity, and a 14:10 light:dark cycle. Nutrient uptake by Ulva sp. was high in all seawater media in both culture systems. The frond area, dry weight, chlorophyll a content, dry weight per unit area, and chlorophyll a content per unit area of Ulva sp. at the end of the experimental period were the highest in deep seawater and the lowest in surface seawater in both culture systems. These values, except for dry weight per unit area and chlorophyll a content per unit area, for each seawater media in the intermittent water supply system were higher than those in the continuous water supply system. We conclude that not only deep seawater as the culture medium but also the seawater supply system is important for effective cultivation of macroalgae.
This study investigated the quality of tofu prepared by treating soybean milk with deep seawater as a coagulant. The quality and shelf-life of the tofu prepared using the deep seawater coagulant were determined and compared to those using $CaSO_4$, surface seawater, and intermediate seawater coagulant. The tofu made with the deep seawater coagulant was firmest. In addition, the deep seawater tofu product had more, smaller particles in the microscopic view, compared to the tofu made from surface and intermediate seawater coagulants. The deep seawater tofu product had the lowest viable cell counts and turbidity. In addition, the deep seawater tofu product had a longer extended shelf-life. From these results, deep seawater appears to improve the texture, taste, and shelf-life of tofu when used as a coagulant.

Background: This study was a long-term evaluation of $^{137}Cs$ and $^{90}Sr$ activity concentrations in seawater samples from the East Sea, Korea, in order to establish current activity levels. Results and long-term monitoring trends will be useful in the future monitoring of environmental radioactivity. Materials and Methods: Surface seawater samples were collected quarterly from Guryongpo and Jangho in the East Coast between 1998 and 2010 and the quarterly deep seawater samples were collected from three sites in the sea adjacent to Ulleung-do between 2012 and 2015. The activity concentrations of $^{137}Cs$ were measured using a gamma-spectrometer. The activity concentrations of $^{90}Sr$ and $^{90}Y$ in a radioactive equilibrium state were measured using a gas flow proportional counter. Results and Discussion: We found the annual average activity concentrations of $^{137}Cs$ in the surface seawater was $1.66-2.89mBq{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ in Guryongpo and $1.68-2.43mBq{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ in Jangho. The annual average activity concentrations of $^{90}Sr$ in the surface seawater was $0.83-1.98mBq{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ in Guryongpo and $0.82-1.57mBq{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ in Jangho. The annual average activity concentrations of $^{137}Cs$ in the deep seawater sites were $1.51-1.73mBq{\cdot}kg^{-1}$, $1.19-1.60mBq{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ and $0.87-1.15mBq{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ in TH, JD, and HP. The annual average activity concentrations of $^{90}Sr$ in the same deep seawater sites were $1.00-1.94mBq{\cdot}kg^{-1}$, $0.82-1.26mBq{\cdot}kg^{-1}$, and $0.79-1.32mBq{\cdot}kg^{-1}$. The effective half-life was calculated by analyzing change over time in the activity concentration in the surface seawater. The effective half-life of $^{137}Cs$ was $15.3{\pm}0.1years$ in Guryongpo and $102{\pm}3years$ in Jangho. The effective half-life of $^{90}Sr$ was $28.3{\pm}4.3years$ in Guryongpo and $16.6{\pm}0.1years$ in Jangho. The ratio of the average activity concentration ($^{137}Cs/^{90}Sr$) was 1.72 in the surface seawater, which is similar to the reported ratio of the global radioactive fallout. The ratio in the deep seawater was 1.24, which is somewhat low compared to the global ratio (1.6, 1.8). Conclusion: Activity concentrations of $^{137}Cs$ and $^{90}Sr$ in the seawaters of the East Sea were similar to the previously reported activity levels in the East Sea and northwestern Pacific as a result of global radioactive fallout following atmospheric nuclear weapon tests.
The abundant nutrients contained in deep seawater are delivered by natural upwellings from the deep sea to the surface sea. However, the natural upwelling phenomenon is limited to specific areas of the sea; in other areas, the thermocline separates the surface sea from the lower layer. Thus, the surface layer is often deficient in nutritive salts, causing the deterioration of its primary productivity and ultimately leading to an imbalance in the marine ecosystem. Without a consistent supply of nitrogenous nutritive salts, they are absorbed by phytoplankton, resulting in a considerable problem in primary productivity. To solve this issue, a floating type of artificial upwelling system is suggested to artificially pump up, distribute, and diffuse deep seawater containing rich nutritive salts. The key technologies for developing such a floating artificial upwelling system are a floating offshore structure with a large diameter riser, self-supplying energy system, density current generating system, method for estimating the emission and absorption of CO2, and way to evaluate the primary production variation. Strengthening the primary production of the sea by supplying deep seawater to the sea surface will result in a sea environment with abundant fishery resources.
Deep Ocean Water is formed within restricted area including polar sea (high latitude) by cooling of surface seawater and globally circulated in the state of insolation with surface seawater. Although not as obvious as estuaries mixing, Brine groundwater is mixture of recirculated seawater and groundwater. Seawater having high osmotic pressure infiltrate into unconfined aquifer where is connected to the sea. The ions dissolved in seawater are present in constant proportions to each other and to the total salt content of seawater. However deviation in ion proportions have been observed in some brine groundwater. Some causes of these exception to the Rule of constant proportions are due to many chemical reactions between periphery soil and groundwater. While Deep Ocean Water (DOW) have a large quantity of functional trace metals and biological affinity relative to brine groundwater, DOW have relatively small amount of harmful bacteria and artificial pollutants.
A flow and low temperature of deep seawater the biofouling properties in a seawater environment of different materials, such as a steel pipe, polyethylene pipe, and nylon net, used for ocean industries. Experiments in a real sea environment were performed to grasp the quantitative and qualitative biofouling from diatoms attached to materials by measuring the Chlorophyll-a density. Experimental samples were placed under five types of ocean environmental conditions and analyzed every month for five months. It is shown that the biofouling by diatoms was strongly affected by the seawater temperature for all of the experimental samples. It was found that diatoms mainly adhered to the nylon net, while crustaceans prefer polyethylene, under a high temperature condition. It is believed that the biofouling properties are strongly related to the surface roughness of a material. The biofouling under the low temperature condition of deep seawater was rare and stable for the experimental periods. The inside of a pipe conveying deep seawater can be presumed to remain clear without biofouling on the condition of a flow and low temperature of deep seawater.
This study investigated the quality of salted mackerel prepared with deep seawater concentrate and salt. The quality of the salted mackerel product prepared with deep seawater was compared to that prepared with surface and intermediate seawater salts, sun-dried salt, and refined salt. After preparing the salted mackerel products using the five salts, the products were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 35 days. Quality characteristics compared were the acid value (AV), peroxide value (POV), lipophilic browning, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), pH, viable cell count, and sensory factors. The deep seawater salted mackerel product had the lowest AV, POV, browning value, and viable cell counts, compared to the others, while it had the highest score in the sensory evaluation.

The estimation of seawater intrusion into deep aquifers has been becoming an important subject in terms of site characterization for geological disposal of radioactive waste. Conventional direct-current resistivity methods have been used for ground water explorations and recently have been applied to environmental problems. However, electromagnetic methods are more practical and useful for such a deep investigation. We consider audio-frequency magnetotelluric (AMT) and surface-to-borehole electromagnetic (EM) tomography methods as promising tools for the investigation of deep aquifer. These methods were tested in the Hasunuma area, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Although the study area is in an urban area, high-quality AMT data were acquired, which was mainly accomplished by night-time data recording and remote-reference data processing. One-dimensional inversion results of the AMT data revealed two extremely conductive zones, which is consistent with the electrical conductivity profile of pore water in core samples. It can be interpreted as the seawater intrusions into both zones. However, the chemical analysis of the groundwater sampled in the deep zone suggests that this groundwater must be fossil seawater that had been confined during sedimentation processes. In addition, the permeability coefficient of the deep layer is very low. Thus the deep conductive zone corresponds to the fossil seawater regarded as being difficult to flow.
This study examined Tetraselmis sp. JK-46 isolated from seawater from the East Sea. Deep seawater (DSW) had a greater effect on the growth of Tetraselmis sp. JK-46 than surface seawater (SSW). The crude protein, lipid, carbohydrate and ash contents of Tetraselmis sp. JK-46 cultured with DSW were 27.2, 37.1, 13.2 and 26.3 %, respectively, and these values were similar to the results for samples cultured with SSW. The contents of Mg, Ca, Fe and K in the DSW cultured samples were 7080.3, 1009.6, 251.2, and 2749.7 mg/100 g, respectively. The fatty acid compositions of Tetraselmis sp. JK-46 cultured with DSW and SSW were 53.7 and 49.0 % polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and 25.7 and 30.7 % saturated fatty acids (SFA), respectively. The total amino acid contents of the samples cultured with DSW and SSW were 7392.6 and 6376.0 mg/100 g respectively. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of Tetraselmis sp. JK-46 extracts increased with the concentration of the chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions. The half maximal inhibitiory concentrations ($IC_{50}$) of the chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions of DSW and SSW cultured samples were 1.2 and 2.6 mg/mL, and 3.1 and 3.3 mg/mL, respectively. The ethyl acetate fractions of DSW and SSW cultured samples has anticoagulant activity and the activated partial thromboplastin times (APTT) were 93.4 and 89.3 sec., respectively. The chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions showed antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans.
