  • The requirement for durability of concrete bridge deck is increasing as the deterioration for the concrete bridge deck exposed to severe environment has been increased. For this reason, the concern about high-durable concrete is being high. Recently, a metakaolin is highly spotlighted as new admixture because its strength and durability are equivalent to silica fume. On the other hands, there are few researches for the metakaolin concrete bridge deck in domestic. So many various long-term data on the mechanical property and durability is needed to apply metakaolin concrete at the concrete bridge deck construction field. This study is aim to evaluate the long-term mechanical properties and durability of metakaolin concrete bridge deck with curing age. Mechanical properties are estimated by the compressive and flexural strength, and the drying shrinkage, the chloride resistance, the scaling, and freezing and thawing characteristics are compared with curing age. According to the results, when the metakaolin concrete is used, the development of compressive and flexural strength proceed in both the early and old ages. It is also improved the resistance of chloride penetration, freezing and thawing in concrete. It was showed that replacement of metakaolin was efficient for the reduction of the drying shrinkage.

  • High performance concrete containing silica fume for use in bridge deck overlay emerged as a viable type of bridge deck overlay that economic advantage in construction. They have gained acceptance in Europe, America and Canada in a relatively short time due to their low cost. In this study, high-performance concretes containing silica fume were tested and evaluated in the laboratory to assess their applicability for use in bridge deck overlay. It was conducted with experiments of mechanical and durability characteristics in compressive strength, flexural strength, chloride permeability, abrasion resistance, repeated freezing and thawing cycles and deicing salt scaling resistance. Laboratory test result describe that high-performance concrete containing silica fume for bridge deck overlay application shows most outstanding capacity.

  • Wheel load fatigue experiment is carried out on a FRP-concrete composite deck. In FRP-concrete composite deck, FRP plays a role of a main tensile member as well as a permanent formwork and concrete plays a role of a main compressive member. Wheel load fatigue experiment, which shows more realistic behavior than pulsating fatigue experiment, is selected as a fatigue performance evaluation method. Until 1,000,000 cycles of loadings, load resistant performance is maintained without any loss, while residual deflection is increased.

  • In this research, eight waterproofing membranes were selected from commercial market and the tensile adhesive characteristics of the waterproofing system (WPS) on concrete bridge deck were investigated in view of various factor in asphalt pavement. Tensile adhesive strength (TAS) test of different asphalt pavement types showed that TAS of WPS under SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt) pavement was greater than that under dense asphalt pavement. Tensile adhesive strength (TAS) of sheet membranes was improved as the compaction temperature of asphalt concrete increase, but TAS of liquid membranes were not. TAS of sheet membranes after wheel tracking test were in the order of the sites under wheel path (UWP), before wheel tracking (BWT) and nearby wheel path (NWP), Since TAS of the same WPS of UWP was higher than TAS of BWT, wheel loading had function of pressing WPS resulting in higher adhesive strength, But liquid membranes were variable on types, The feature of detached interface after T AS test showed that sheet types were all detached in between deck concrete and WPS, and liquid types were detached in between asphalt pavement and WPS,

  • Crack control of precast members is crucial for durability. However, there is no clear provision to check the crack width of precast joints. This study presents an experimental investigation of loop joint details for use in a precast bridge deck system. High strength concrete of 130 MPa was chosen for durability and closer joint spacing. Static tests were conducted to investigate the cracking and ultimate behavior of test specimens. The experimental results indicate that current design codes provide reasonable estimation of the flexural strength and cracking load of precast elements with loop joint of high strength concrete. However, the crack width control of the loop joints with high strength concrete by the current design practices was not appropriate. Some recommendations to improve crack control of the loop joint were derived.

  • In bridge deck systems, deflections and cracking can be controlled by longitudinal and transverse prestressing, There are some benefits, longitudinal cracking control, the thickness reduction of deck slab, the widening of deck width and the reduction of the cross section area, in transversely post-tensioned concrete box girder bridges. However, it has been not sufficient to study the structural behaviors of transversely post-tensioned concrete box girder. Therefore, It is needed to predict the structural behaviors by prestressing and static loading. In this study, the analytical and experimental load tests are carried out to study the effect of transverse prestressing on concrete box girder. For these objectives, four test specimens are fabricated with various tendon spacing and steel ratio of top slab. The analytical and experimental studies are performed to estimate effects of the prestressing and failure tests.

  • In 1980s, a number of bridges with bare concrete deck were constructed on the Korea highway. After 20 years service, many bare concrete decks are still in good condition without special maintenance activity. Therefore, the application of the bare concrete deck is being reestimated from the view of construction and maintenance. As a part of the program, the characteristic of penetration(surface chloride and apparent diffusion coefficient) of de-icing salt into bare concrete bridge deck was analyzed in order to predict the service life of bridge on Korea highway.

  • The long span PSC deck of composite girder bridge should be needed in order to improve the endurance and to simplify the structure of the steel bridge. However, there have been few domestic research activities about long-span PSC decks for the steel bridges with a small number of girders. In this study, a literature survey is performed to develop a new deck system for the steel bridge with a small number of girders. By considering the characteristics of a small number of girders bridge system, a cast-in-place long span PSC deck is proposed for a small number of girders bridges. To examine structural behavior and safety of the proposed PSC deck, the real scale partial models of the deck(12m$\times$3.2m) are tested under the static loading. In the test, the failure mode and behavior of each specimen, and ultimate load carrying capacity of the proposed PSC deck are identified.

  • Deformations of bridge deck ends on abutments or on transition between bridge decks can cause extreme deformations on track. Especially, since slab track is fixed onto the bridge deck slab on concrete slab track-installed bridges, deformations of bridge deck ends directly affect the track behavior, and thus these interactions can bring about the premature failure of rail fastenings or other deteriorations to lower the serviceability. In this study, a foreign standard to evaluate forces on track components caused by the track-bridge interactions and the serviceability of bridge deck ends is investigated, and for the real bridges, the serviceability of bridge deck ends according to several parameters of bridge and track is analyzed. It is found that arrangements and spring coefficients of bridge bearings, as well as distance between bridge bearing and last rail support, support spacings, rail support spring coefficient, are very important parameters.
