  • Decision tree is one of the most effective and widely used methods for building classification model. Researchers from various disciplines such as statistics, machine teaming, pattern recognition, and data mining have considered the decision tree method as an effective solution to their field problems. In this paper, an application of decision tree method to classify the faults of induction motors is proposed. The original data from experiment is dealt with feature calculation to get the useful information as attributes. These data are then assigned the classes which are based on our experience before becoming data inputs for decision tree. The total 9 classes are defined. An implementation of decision tree written in Matlab is used for four data sets with good performance results

  • Providing information on corporate level decision making for multiple decision makers in a consistent way is essential in Decision Support Systems. However, since the decision makers have different background and knowledge, the models used by them are also different in representation models. This makes the decision makers require a lot of efforts for model integration in an integrated decision making. The purpose of this paper is to propose an integration mechanism for synthetic use of multi-abstraction level decision making models. The proposed integration mechanism consists of model interpretation phase, model transformation phase and model integration phase. Specifically, the model transformation phase is divided into model tightening mode which gather information to makes a model transformed into upper level model, and model relaxing mode which makes lower level model.

  • Multi-criteria decision making is deducing the relative importance in the criterion of decision making and each alternative which is able to making a variety of choices measures the preferred degree in the series of low-raking criterions. Moreover, this is possible by synthesizing them systematically. In general, a fundamental problem decision maker solve for multi-criteria decision making is evaluating a set of activities which are considered as the target logically, and this kind of work is evaluated and synthesized by various criterions of the value which a chain of activities usually hold in common. In this paper, we are the eigenvector methods in weights calculating. For the purpose of making optimal decision, the data of five different car models are used. For computing, we used Visual Numerica Version 1.0 software package.

  • When a company makes a decision on an investment for a new product as a source for a new program, it is not easy for them to take a proper decision-making process in this highly volatile market. There could be several ways to make an investment decision on a new program. A company needs to choose the most suitable way of investment which is reflected current corporate circumstances and potential risks. We check up the process of the engineering economic decision in a automotive part manufacturing company. We define the gap between the theory and practice on engineering economic decisions. We present advices to make a decision desirably.

  • Regarding all methods of decision making as parts of the same subject, one is astounded to find that the field speaks to the practitioners about multicriteria decision making with a multi-forked tongue, different methods give different and conflicting outcomes even for very simple decisions. In this paper, five well-known decision theories are described and used to work out a simple decision to choose the best of three cars. The outcomes turn out not to be the same for all the methods, which is troubling because one would expect unique answers in decision making. Several "meta" criteria that are essential for making a decision theory to make a choice as to which decision approach is best.h is best.

  • Net Present Value (NPV) criterion has been the most widely used criterion to evaluate investment opportunities. However, the analysis based on the NPV criterion falls to consider the managerial flexibility of deferring decisions until major uncertainty is resolved. Recently, real options method attracted a lot of attention as a Powerful approach to address the problem. If investment decision is deferred, the value of the investment opportunity increases but opportunity cost increases at the same time. Therefore, it is important to decide the optimal timing how long the decision can be deferred. In this paper, we developed a model deciding the optimal decision timing. Using the real options approach, the model derived the optimal deferring time until a decision is made. Then, the model was applied to a Korean mobile telecommunications company who wants to invest on the wireless resale business. We believe that this model would be very useful to overcome the problem of NPV decision criterion. With this approach, we can make contingent decisions based on the observation of uncertainly resolutions.

  • This paper presents a fuzzy-goal programming(FGP) approach for Bi-Level Linear Multiple Objective Decision Making(BLL-MODM) problem in a large hierarchical decision making and planning organization. The proposed approach combines the attractive features of both fuzzy set theory and goal programming(GP) for MODM problem. The GP problem has been developed by fixing the weights and aspiration levels for generating pareto-optimal(satisfactory) solution at each level for BLL-MODM problem. The higher level decision maker(HLDM) provides the preferred values of decision vector under his control and bounds of his objective function to direct the lower level decision maker(LLDM) to search for his solution in the right direction. Illustrative numerical example is provided to demonstrate the proposed approach.

  • This paper is aimed to present a fuzzy decision-making approach to deal with disaster recovery priority decision problem in information system. We derive an evaluation approach based on TOPSIS(Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution), to help disaster recovery priority decision of total information system for port logistics in a fuzzy environment where the vagueness and subjectivity are handled with linguistic terms parameterized by trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. This study applies the fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making method to determine the importance weight of evaluation criteria and to synthesize the ratings of candidate disaster recovery system. Aggregated the evaluators' attitude toward preference, then TOPSIS is employed to obtain a crisp overall performance value for each alternative to make a final decision. This approach is demonstrated with a real case study involving 4 evaluation criteria(system dependence, RTO, loss, alternative business support), 7 information systems for port logistics assessed by 5 evaluators from Maritime Affairs and Port Office.

  • This study aims at examining each firm's decision-makings of complex product and system (hereafter CoPS) innovation strategy, so that it tries to reveal the nature and role of CoPS innovations strategy. And it designed a comparative case study along with qualitative methods, by having two mobile operators' digital rights management (hereafter DRM) innovation in South Korea's digital music service industry. Through literature review, this study formulated three research propositions: (i) Each firm's decision-makings of CoPS innovations strategy are analytical negotiation process among economic actors in an industry; (ii) Each firm's market power originated from its market share from the installed base through network effect and switching cost influence decision-makings of CoPS innovation strategies; (iii) Each firm's decision-makings of different CoPS innovation strategies are related to their intension of achieving better market power, consequently dominant design. Through empirical examination of two mobile operators' decision-makings of DRM innovation strategy, this study empirically verified three research propositions.

  • The purposes of this study were (1) to segment female college students' apparel shoppers into unique apparel buying decision-making style groups; and (2) to profile for each segment in terms of personal characteristics (material values, change seeking tendency and prestige sensitivity) and fashion information sources. Data were collected through questionnaires from convenient sample of 290 female college students. As a result of cluster analysis and univariate analysis of variance, distinctive consumer decision-making style groups of consumers were identified; Value-maximizing Recreational Shoppers, Brand-Maximizing Emotional Shoppers, and Apathetic Shoppers. These three groups were compared as to the effect of personal characteristics variables and fashion information sources through univariate analysis of variance and chi-square statistics. The result showed that personal characteristics (material values, change seeking tendency and prestige sensitivity) and fashion-information sources do influence the consumer decision-making styles and that these three groups were unique in their decision-making characteristics showing that consumer decision-making styles can be a good segmentation base for apparel market.
