  • On the study, The activated carbon assemblies(ACA) were prepared by activation of the coated glass mat(woven type) with phenolic resin at $700^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ after drying and curing processes. Surface of the ACA was continuously modified with $N_2$, $CO_2$ or $NH_3$ at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 hour for comparison of adsorptive characteristics between the ACA and commercial activated carbon cloth. The ACA showed high surface areas up to $2440\;m^2/g$ when converted into the coated carbon base, and the surface was investigated by FT-IR and XPS. The basic ACA modified with $NH_3$ displayed the efficient removal capability of $SO_2$, which is 75% of that in commercial activated carbon cloth. Therefore, it has proved the applicability of ACA as an inexpensive materials for Dry de-SOX system.

  • As conservation of global environment has becoming a major outstanding issue of the world, the International Maritime Organization(IMO) has been legislation a convention for prevention of air pollution from ships. By the new convention, use of air pollutants such as SO/sub x/, NO/sub x/, Freon and Halon Gas shall be restricted. In this regards, analysing these requirements of the convention is required as the convention will also be applied on restriction of discharging exhaust gases from ships by establishing a requirement of SO/sub x/ and NO/sub x/ discharged. The purposed of this study is as follows ; 1) Introducing of the backgrounds of legislating the convention for prevention of air pollution from ships and major contents of the convention and a countermeasures on the convention by Korea. 2) Reviewing by analyzing the influence on domestic industies concerned by restriction of SO/sub x/, NO/sub x/ in exhaust gases and sulphur content of fuel oil. 3) Preparing a countermeasure on the convention properly.

  • IMO to issue some restricted maritime legislation for reducing the adverse environmental impacts arising from such ship exhaust emissions. According to the IMO policy, every ship entering the Baltic SECAs has to equip the gas cleaning scrubber. The discharged waste solution by gas cleaning scrubber contains many types of salts, which to recover some valuable materials before disposal. This study try to achieve valuable salts including AN and AS throughout a few process such as selective organic solvents salting out, low temperature extraction and thermal evaporation. Amongst them, Thermal evaporation with repetition extraction using inorganic solvent was the most optimum to purify the extracted AN. This valuable salt was evaluated by Elemental analysis and Differential scanning calorimetry.

  • Limestone has been used as absorbent in the FGD(Flue Gas Desulfurization) system, the DeSOx system of thermal power plant. This study investigated the desulfurization characteristics of the two different limestones, 325mesh and 200mesh particle size. Experimental analysis showed that the dissolving rate of limestone became much slower as the particle size increased. But the desulfurization efficiency depended on the L/G(liquid/gas) ratio and slurry pH regardless of the limestone particle size. The quality of gypsum produced in the FGD process increased as the limestone particle size or the slurry pH decreased. To reduce the cost of absorbent, the mixed limestone which were composed of 200 and 325mesh limestone with 5 different ratios were tested.

  • Flue gas desulfurization(FGD) is an effective technique to remove $SO_2$ gases of coal-fired plants. Limestone is usually used as desulfurizing agent. In this study, we use the limestone sludge which is a by-product of steel industry in order to replace desulfurizing agent of FGD process. Physical and chemical characteristics analysis of desulfurizing agent was conducted. Desulfurizing agent using limestone sludge was fabricated by pre-treatment process and, then the agent was used on FGD process. Consequently, the tendency on the $SO_2$ concentration did not appear. And limestone sludge was considered as possible alternative agent for flue gas desulfurization process through absorber control system.

  • Experimental investigations on the effect of two kinds of additives ; aqueous NaOH solution and ammonia(NH$_3$) for removal of NOx and SO$_2$ simultaneously by corona discharge were carried out. The simulated combustion flue gas was[NO(0.02[%])-SO$_2$(0.08[%])-$CO_2$-Air-$N_2$] Volume percentage of aqueous NaOH solution used was 20[%] and $N_2$flow rate was 2.5[$\ell$/min] for bubbling aqueous NaOH solution Ammonia gas(14.81[%]) balanced by argon was diluted by air. NH$_3$ molecular ratios(MR) based on [NH$_3$] and [NO+SO$_2$] were 1, 1.5 and 2.5 The vapour of aqueous NaOH solution and NH$_3$was introduced to the main simulated combustion flue gas duct through injection systems which were located at downstream of corona discharge reactor. NOx(NO+NO$_2$) removal rate by injecting the vapour of aqueous NaOH solution was much better than that by injecting NH$_3$however SO$_2$removal rate by injecting NH$_3$was much better than that by injecting the vapour of aqueous NaOH SO$_2$removal rate slightly increased with increasing applied voltage. When the vapour of aqueous NaOH solution and NH$_3$were simultaneously injection NOx and SO$_2$ removal rate were significantly increased.

Effect of $SO_2$ on DeNOx by Ammonia in Simultaneous Removal of SOx and NOx over Activated Coke (활성 코우크스상의 동시 탈황탈질에서 암모니아에 의한 탈질에 이산화황이 미치는 영향)

  • The $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ removal with an activated coke catalyst was conducted by a two-stage reaction which first $SO_2$ was oxidized to $H_2SO_4$ and then $NO_x$ was reduced to $N_2$. But if unreacted sulfur dioxide entered in the second stage, the $NO_x$ reduction was hindered by the reaction with ammonia. In this study, experimental investigations by using lab-scale column apparatus on the product and the reactivity of $SO_2$ with ammonia over coke catalyst which was activated with sulfuric acid was carried out through ultimate analysis DTA, TGA and SEM of catalyst before and after the reaction. Also, the effect of reaction emperature on the reactivity of $SO_2$ with ammonia was determined by means of breakthrough curves with time. The obtained results from this study were summarized as following; Activated cokes were decreased carbon component and increased oxygen and sulfur components in comparison with original cokes. The products over coke catalyst were faced fine crystal of $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, which results in the pressure loss of reacting system. The order of general reactivity in terms of the reaction temperature after breakthrough for $SO_2$ was found to be $150^{\circ}C$ > $200^{\circ}C$ > $100^{\circ}C$. This was related to adsorption amounts of ammonia on the activated cokes.

Studies on Outbreak of Diseases and Pests and Effect of Environmental Friendly Control Materials in Boxthorn (Lycium chinenseMill.) Organic Cultivation (구기자(Lycium chinense Mill.) 유기재배시 병해충 발생 및 친환경제제의 방제효과)

  • This study was carried out to develop environmental friendly control for major diseases and pests on Boxthorn (Lycium chinense Mill.). Outbreak of Eighteen diseases and pests were found at the Boxthorn organic yards in Chung-nam province. Among them Powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni de Cand.), Hypophyllous mold (Pseudocercospora chengtuensis (Tai)), Western flower trips (Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande)), Green peach aphid (Myzus pericae (Sulzer)) and Corn earworm (Helicoverpa armigera) needed to be controled by environmental friendly methods for high fruit yield of organic Boxthorn. In summer(Jun) test Bacilus subtilis QST 713 wettable powder and Sulfur wettable powder were effective and in autumn (Sep.) test Sulfur, Copper hydroxide and Paraffinic oil were relatively effective in Powdery mildew. In Hypophyllous mold control test Paraffinic oil and Bacilus subtilis GB - 0365 were effective with above 70% control value. And it was possible to control Western flower trips by natural enemy (Orius laevigatus) by 80% control value. Corn earworm was possible to control by Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. aizawai GB413 flowable and Bacillus thuringiensis aizawa 0423 wettable powder application above 70%. And Green peach aphid was controllable with environmental friendly materials, such as, Bacillus subtilis (Seoncho), Bacillus subtilis (Jinsami) above 80% and Ginkgo nut extract above 70% control value.
