This study was conducted to examine effect of different environment conditions in glass, PC, PET and PE greenhouses controlled by different environment control systems on the growth of green pepper. Light transmittance of 64.7% in the glass greenhouse was the highest among different green-houses. Air temperature was the highest in the glass greenhouse when ventilators were closed, and was the highest in the PE greenhouse when ventilators were open. Air relative humidity was the highest in the PE greenhouse during 24 hours. The amount of solar energy accumulated in soil was the greatest in the glass greenhouse and this energy released during the night escaped through covering materials. Latent heat and solar energy affected air temperature increased in greenhouses. The air temperature of glass greenhouse was 27.5$^{\circ}C$ at 11 O clock, which was the highest air temperature among the all greenhouse types. Clear differences were observed in leaf area and plant height at 30 days after transplanting. Days to first flowering was the shortest in the glass greenhouse with 72.7 days. Flower shedding was the greatest in the PE greenhouse with 12.6%. Days to fruit harvesting was the shortest in the glass greenhouse with 14.3 days. Fruit quality, such as fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit flesh thickness, and vitamin C content, was the best in the glass greenhouse. Percent marketable fruits was the highest with 95.3% when the pepper was grown hydroponically in the glass greenhouse.
Vegetable perilla, "Ipdlkkae 1"(Perilla frutescens var japonica Hara), was tested about the flowering and maturing responce in summer and winter. In summer season, it was researched about those responses according to the change of seeding date from May 15th to Oct. 15th at one month interval in the field. "Ipdlkkae 1" flowered Oct. 2nd under the day length of eleven hours and fourty-one minutes, compared with Sep. 6th (day length of twelve hours and fourty-three minutes) of "Yepsildlggae". And those responses showed that vegetable perilla was have to seeded before July 15th for two reason. The first is a unique response of perilla to day length. If perilla stay under short-day condition for some days, perilla will flower after four weeks. The second is a weather, especially frost and cold. In the test of latest seeding at Oct. 15th, the plants flowered more late than normal flowering period and they were not able to mature for frost of early winter. And this result showed that any other species, which has the characteristic of later flowering than that of "Ipdlkkae 1", could not able to mature in the field. In winter time, this species was tested about the same responses according to the change of short-day treatments. In the case of the test from May 1st (above fourteen hours day length), even if the test plants were stayed under short-day condition for more than 10 days, they were not able to mature, but flowerd. From the test of Apr. 15th, day length of thirteen hours, the plants were showed variable reaction to the short-day treatment. In this test, 11days for short-day treatment was a basic day to decide whether flowering was delayed or not. In the test from Apr. 1st, perilla seeds were able to harvest at least 5 days short-day treatment. In the final test from Mar. 15th, it had no need to take short-day treatment for harvesting of normal seeds, because the day length of that are twelve hours, which is an enough time to induce flowering and maturing, previously reported.
In this study, we evaluated the differences in fruit development and quality indices of fruits subjected to blossom thinning before full bloom in 'Hanareum' and 'Niitaka' pears (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai). We carried out a thinning treatments at 5 days before full bloom, targeting the blossoms at the 1st and 2nd position (T1) or the blossoms at the 6th and 7th position (T2) from the basal part of the flower cluster in both cultivars. Blossom thinning treatments increased the average fruit weight of early-season Asian pear 'Hanareum' up to 10.5% (T1) and 11.0% (T2) at harvest time (110 days after full bloom). The mid-season 'Niitaka' pear showed increased fruit weight of up to 12.6% (T1) and 16.8% (T2) at harvest time (170 days after full bloom). Moreover, these treatments increased the production rate of bigger sized fruits in both cultivars. Removal of blooms also affected fruit quality indices; the bloom-thinned fruits showed higher soluble solids contents (about $1^{\circ}Brix$) and higher skin color redness ($a^*$) especially in 'Niitaka' pears when compared to the non-thinned controls. Overall, the treatments increased the fruit size and weight as well as fruit quality including soluble solids and skin color. Bloom thinning treatment targeting the 6th to 7th blossom from the basal part of the flower cluster may be recommended as the practical thinning method in Asian pear 'Hanareum' and 'Niitaka'.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of shipping temperature and harvesting stage on the quality and vase life of cut flower in standard chrysanthemum 'Baekma' for export. Cut flowers harvested at flowering stage 4 were stored for 24 hours at $5^{\circ}C$, and then quality and vase life were evaluated after simulated shipping for 48 hours at 5, 20, and $35^{\circ}C$. In addition, cut flowers harvested in flowering stage 1 to stage 6 were evaluated after simulated shipping for 72 hours at $5^{\circ}C$. As shipping temperature increased, $CO_2$ concentration inside the box rapidly increased, and $O_2$ concentration greatly decreased. The vase life of cut flowers was extended by 3 days and chlorophyll content of leaves, fresh weight, solution uptake, and flower diameter were better maintained in $5^{\circ}C$ shipping than in 20 or $35^{\circ}C$ shipping. The vase life of cut flowers harvested at flowering stage 1 or 2 was extended by 5.2 or 5.5 days compared to those harvested at flowering stage 6, more 6. The fresh weight was lower and flower diameter was smaller by 1.3 or 2.5 cm in cut flowers of flowering stages 1 through 3 than flowering stages 4 through 6. In addition, the cut flowers of flowering stages 4 through 6 showed higher solution uptake than those of flowering stages 1 through 3. These results suggest that shipping at $5^{\circ}C$ of cut flowers harvested at flowering stage 4 is preferential for promoting vase life and quality of cut flower in standard chrysanthemum 'Baekma' for export to Japan.
Campanula, native to Korea, is potentially an attractive potted or bedding plant. Experiments were conducted to produce a $F_1$ hybrid plant for a reduced plant height, 'Jiknyeo', by a conventional cross breeding between C. punctata Lam. and C. punctata Lam. var. rubriflora Mak. The crossing was carried out in July 2001 and the seeds were harvested in October 2001. Seeds were stored for two months at $5^{\circ}C$ for vernalization, and then were sown in March 2002. The $F_1$ hybrid have a purple flower color, and decreased plant height, leaf length, leaf width, and peduncle length. Each flower maintained freshness for a period of 20 days on the average. The whole flowering period of a plant was four months. The plant has flowering characteristics of an indeterminate inflorescence, prefers low humidity during the whole cultivation period, and requires low temperature in winter for flower bud differentiation.
KA 101 and Xanthi-Basma were cultivated in Korea and Greece to compare the respective responses to environment and cultivation method on their growth characteristics and some properties of harvested leaves during 1984 and 1985. The contents of clay, calcium, organic matter and pH were higher in the soil of greece than that of Korea. Sunshine hours and precipitation in Greece during harvest and curing season were 8.6 hours per day and 53.3mm compared to that of 3.8 hours per day and 320mm in Korea, respectively. The plant height, leaf size and yield decreased, and days to flower was shorter 8-11 days in greek grown plants. The dehydration and curing process in Greece was linear and rapid due to the constant daily change of temperature and relative humidity with dry weather during curing season during curing season. But those process in Korea was variable and tardy due to rainy weather. Cured leaf ratio increased with upper stalk leaves in Greece but it was rather lower at top stalk position in Korea. The harvested green leaf cultivated in Greece showed higher contents of petroleum ether extract, total nitrogen and nicotine, but lower contents of reducing sugar and lower ratio of protein nitrogen to total nitrogen than in Korea.
From April to May 1998, Phytophthora rot on pear, which has not been reported in Korea before, became an epidemic in the southeast part of the country under abnormally higher temperature and prolonged rainy days. Average temperature was about $3^{\circ}$ higher than in normal years, and 29 days were rainy during the 2 months in the areas surveyed. Over 1,000 orchards estimated at about 270 ha in 19 cultivation areas were infected by the disease, which occurred on all parts of the tree such as leaves, shoots, branches, stems, and flower clusters. Among 43 isolates collected from various locations and plant parts, 41 were identified as Phytophthora cactorum while 2 were identified as P. cambivora based on their mycological characteristics. The representative isolates revealed strong pathogenicity not only to pear but also to apple and peach. Among 23 pear cultivars tested, 7 were estimated as susceptible, 4 were moderate, and 11 were resistant to the pathogen. Results suggest that Phytophthora disease on pear is a potential threat to pear cultivation when environmental factors are favorable to disease development.
Adzuki beans have gained popularity in recent years due to their health benefits. Breeding of Adzuki beans is less favorable than with other legumes due to low genetic diversity. This study aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity of 252 adzuki bean germplasms from China, Japan, and Korea using 18 agro-morphological parameters and comparing their performance to three prominent Korean cultivars: Geomguseul, Arari, and Chungjupat. Leaf shape, pod color, and seed coat color were among the qualitative traits that showed wide variations. The quantitative variables also showed wide variations among adzuki bean germplasms. Although there was no significant difference (p < 0.05), the average rate of germination declined in the order of Korean (91.44%) > Chinese (91.31%) > Japanese (87.47%) adzuki beans. Chinese adzuki beans needed fewer days to flower (DF, 58.22 days) and days to mature (DM, 107.13 days), which varied significantly compared to the Korean and Japanese adzuki beans (p < 0.05). The average number of pods per plant (PPP) and one-hundred seeds weight (HSW) were higher in Japanese adzuki beans compared to the Korean and Chinese adzuki beans although the variation of each was not significant. Almost 29.76% of the accessions had early-blooming flowers, 3.97% were premature, 21.43% produced more PPP, and 3.97% yielded more SPP compared to control cultivars. Results of hierarchical cluster and principal component analyses revealed three clusters with significant variation in all quantitative variables except for RG (p < 0.05). The key factors in multivariate analyses were DF, DM, and HSW. Our study investigated the genetic diversity of adzuki bean accessions and identified ten early maturing and ten high PPP-yielding accessions. Our findings would help farmers and breeders to select the top-performing accessions that can provide them with various options.
This study was conducted to evaluate the growth and flowering responses of Eustoma grandiflorum cv. Azmasul, Azmahoon and Azmazo influenced by duration of storage at 1$0^{\circ}C$ of seedlings raised in warm season. The plants after cold treatment were cultivated in a glasshouse under natural day length with the minimum temperature of 12$^{\circ}C$. The stem thickness and number of leaves of Azmasul and Azmahoon were not affected by duration of cold treatment However, plant height, internode length fresh and. dry weights were significantly increased in the four-week treatment. In addition, four-week treatment increased flower weight and width. Bays to flowering of Azmasul and Azmahoon in four-week treatment were shortened by 20 days compared to the control or two-week treatment. Shoot growth and flower Qualify of Azmazo under the four-week treatment were promoted. Four-week treatment reduced the days to flowering of Azmazo by 31 and 36 days compared to the control and two-week treatment. The results of this study show that optimum duration for storage at l$0^{\circ}C$ for seedlings of Ewtoma grandiflorum cv Azmasul. Azmahoon and Azmazo grown in warm season is four weeks.

This experiment was conducted to examine the effects of chitosan and sucrose on the vase life of cut rose (Rosa hybrida L. cv. Cardinal). Addition of 5 mg/L chitosan and 3% sucrose to the holding solution prolonged the vase life for 3 days as compared to the control, and improved quality of cut rose in flower diameter and fresh weight. Development of bent-neck was delayed by supply of 2 mg/L or 5 mg/L chitosan and 3% sucrose about 2 or 3 days. When 3% sucrose was added to the holding solution, the rate of water absorption more slowly decreased compared to the other treatments.
