In typical video streaming services such as MPEG encoded video, the transmission data sizes change depending on the frame types and the required bandwidth for QoS support also changes as time passes. Accordingly, in video streaming services using the Internet it could happen that the video services stop occasionally due to instantaneous deficiencies of the required bandwidth under unexpected congestion even if the highest priority is allocated to the service by network administration. In this paper, we investigate several methods for bandwidth allocation and traffic engineering to support MPEG video traffic and propose a new method to reduce the transmission delay and enhance the throughput, there by provisioning the QoS requirements. In the proposed scheme, LSPs are established based on temporal variation patterns of the Internet traffic and the CQ_LLQ policing scheme is applied for traffic shaping at the ingress routers. Finally we verified the performance of the proposed scheme via computer simulations using OPNET.
In Next Generation Wireless Networks (NGWN), lots of information, such as voice and video data, will be used in All-IP networks. It is important note that seamless service for users and handoff between heterogeneous networks must be taken into account in such environments. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a SePH(Seamless Proxy based Handoff) using PMIPv6-based proxy model which is enable to improve the performance of handoff in NGWN. The SePH can efficiently support seamless and IP-based mobility by reducing the search process. The performance results show that our proposed scheme outperforms in terms of QoS (Quality of Service) such as throughput, handoff latency, packet loss, and signaling overhead comparing to the existing schemes.
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) allow mobile nodes to communicate among themselves via wireless multiple hops without the help of the wired infrastructure. Therefore, in the MANET, a route setup mechanism that makes nodes not within each other's transmission range communicate is required and, for this, the Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) was proposed as one of the reactive routing protocols well suited for the characteristics of the MANET. AODV uses the hop count as the routing metric and, as a result, a node selects the farthest neighbor node as its next hop on a route, which results in a problem of deteriorating the overall network throughput because of selecting a relatively low data rate route. In this paper, we propose an efficient reactive routing protocol based on the multi-rate aware MAC. Through the simulations, we analyze the performance of our proposed mechanism and, from the simulation results, we show that our proposed mechanism outperforms the existing mechanism.

Multi-core processors can improve parallelism of application processes and thus can enhance the system throughput. Researchers have recently revealed that the processor affinity is an important factor to determine network I/O performance due to architectural characteristics of multi-core processors; thus, many researchers are trying to suggest a scheme to decide an optimal processor affinity. Existing schemes to dynamically decide the processor affinity are able to transparently adapt for system changes, such as modifications of application and upgrades of hardware, but these have limited access to characteristics of application behavior and run-time information that can be collected heuristically. Thus, these can provide only sub-optimal processor affinity. In this paper, we define meaningful system variables for determining optimal processor affinity and suggest a tool to gather such information. We show that the implemented tool can overcome limitations of existing schemes and can improve network bandwidth.
Recently, with greatly improving the wireless communication technology, new services are created using smart sensors, i.e., machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT). In this paper, we propose a novel IoT device (IoTD) personalization method that adopt Small-cell Access Points (SAPs) to control IoTDs using user equipments (UEs), e.g., smart phones and tablet PC, from service users. First, we introduce a system architecture that consists of UE, IoTD, and SAP and propose the IoTD personalization method with two procedures, i.e., IoTD profile registration procedure and IoTD control procedure. Finally, through simulations, we evaluated the system performance of the proposed scheme and it is shown that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional scheme in terms of the packet delay, packet loss probability, and normalized throughput.
In post-genome period, the technique for identifying gene expression has been changed to high throughput screening. In the field of molecular nutrition, the need for this technique to clarify molecular function of the specific nutrient is essential. In this study, we have tested the zinc-regulated gene expression in zinc-deficient U937 cells, using cDNA microarray which is the cutting-edge technique to screen large numbers of gene expression simultaneously. The study result can be used for the preliminary gene screening data for clarifying, using monocyte U937 cell line, molecular Zn aspect in atherosclerosis. U937 cells were cultured in Zn-adequate (control, 12 $\mu$M Zn) or Zn-deficient (experimental, 0 $\mu$M Zn) ESMI media during 2 days, respectively. Cells were harvested and RNA was extracted. Total RNA was reverse-transcriptinized and synthesized cDNA probe labeled with Cy-3. fluorescent labeled cDNA probe was applied to microarray slide for hybridization slide, and after then, the slide was scanned using fluorescence scanner. ‘Highly expressed genes’ in Zn-deficient U937 cells, comparing to Zn-adequate group, are mainly about the genes for motility protein, immune system protein, oncogene and tumor suppressor and ‘Less highly expressed genes’ are about the genes for transcription, apoptosis associated protein, cell cycle, and several basic transcription factors. The results of this preliminary study imply the effectiveness of cDNA microarray for expression profiling of a singly nutrient deficiency, specially Zn. Furthur study, using tailored-cDNA array and capillary endothelial cell lines, would be beneficial to clarify molecular Zn function, more in detail.
This paper proposes a modified end-to-end secure low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (ME-LEACH) algorithm for enhancing the lifetime of a wireless sensor network (WSN). Energy limitations are a major constraint in WSNs, hence every activity in a WSN must efficiently utilize energy. Several protocols have been introduced to modulate the way a WSN sends and receives information. The end-to-end secure low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (E-LEACH) protocol is a hierarchical routing protocol algorithm proposed to solve high-energy dissipation problems. Other methods that explore the presence of the most powerful nodes on each cluster as cluster heads (CHs) are the sparsity-aware energy efficient clustering (SEEC) protocol and an energy efficient clustering-based routing protocol that uses an enhanced cluster formation technique accompanied by the fuzzy logic (EERRCUF) method. However, each CH in the E-LEACH method sends data directly to the base station causing high energy consumption. SEEC uses a lot of energy to identify the most powerful sensor nodes, while EERRCUF spends high amounts of energy to determine the super cluster head (SCH). In the proposed method, a CH will search for the nearest CH and use it as the next hop. The formation of CH chains serves as a path to the base station. Experiments were conducted to determine the performance of the ME-LEACH algorithm. The results show that ME-LEACH has a more stable and higher throughput than SEEC and EERRCUF and has a 35.2% better network lifetime than the E-LEACH algorithm.
Solid-State Disks (SSDs) have been currently considered as a promising candidate to replace hard disks, due to their significantly short access time, low power consumption, and shock resistance. SSDs, however, have drawbacks such that their write throughput and life span are decreased by random-writes, nearly regardless of SSDs controller designs. Previous studies have mostly focused on better designs of SSDs controller and reducing the number of write operations to SSDs. We suggest another method that reallocates data pages that tend to be simultaneously written to contiguous blocks. Our method gathers write operations during a period of time and generates write traces. After transforming each trace to a set of transactions, our method mines frequent itemsets from the transactions and reallocates the pages of the frequent itemsets. In addition, we introduce an algorithm that reallocates the pages of the frequent itemsets with moderate time complexity. Experiments using TPC-C workload demonstrated that our method successfully reduce 6% of total logical block access.

This paper describes an IEEE 802.15.4-based hierarchical sensor network model for a VAWS(Vehicle Approach Warning System) which provides the drivers of vehicles approaching a sharp turn with the information about vehicles approaching the same turn from the opposite end. In the proposed network model, a tree-structured topology, that can prolong the lifetime of network is formed in a self-organizing manner by a topology control protocol. A simple but efficient routing protocol, that creates and maintains routing tables based on the network topology organized by the topology control protocol, transports data packets generated from the sensor nodes to the base station which then forwards it to a display processor. These protocols are designed as a network layer extension to the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC. In the simulation, which models a scenario with a sharp turn, it is shown that the proposed network model achieves a high-level performance in terms of both energy efficiency and throughput simultaneously.
