Recently ITS have been increasingly applied on the roads to resolve traffic problems. Especially, Variable Message Sign (VMS), which is the one of ITS for traffic management and traffic safety, can be used for providing information about road conditions, climate conditions. In this study, data acquisition and statistical analysis were conducted for estimating safety impacts of providing traffic information through VMS. As a result of analyzing traffic characteristics before and after providing traffic information through VMS, average travel speed was decreased and vehicles tended to drive on centerline of lanes in 1st and 2nd lane after providing traffic information through VMS. Also, in order to analyze safety impacts of provided VMS traffic information, traffic safety hazard zone was established in each lane and probability distributions of passing traffic on the study area was estimated through Anderson-Darling Test. As a result of this, safety impacts of VMS traffic information in 1st lane could, on average, increase in left and right side of the lane by 0.69% and 7.07%, respectively. In case of 2nd lane, safety impacts could, on average, increase in left and right side of the lane by 2.71% and 0.02%, respectively.
Recently, it has been made many adjacent construction of inter-facility by the expansion of urban infrastructure facilities using the underground space. The complaints relating to the stability of the facility by adjacent construction is common. In this study, it was conducted for the subway line 5 Gimpo airport station structure in the upper Gimpo urban railway to determine the behavior characteristics of station structure according to adjacent construction. It was performed evaluation of the safety zone and excavation method for station structure. And after a review of damage evaluation, track irregularities and structural calculation by using a numerical analysis, stability of the station structure according to adjacent construction was evaluated to be secured. This study is expected to be used as basic data in advance if you need to review the effects of nearby structure according to adjacent construction.

Accident statistics shows that the portion of fatal occupant injuries due to side impacts is considerably high. The side impact usually leads to a severe intrusion of side structure into the passenger compartment. Furthermore, the safety zone for the side impact is relatively small compared to the front impact. Those kinds of physics for side impact frequently result in a fatal injury for the occupant. Therefore, NHTSA and EEVC are trying to intensify the regulation for the occupant protection against side impact. Both the regulation and recent market trends are asking for an installation of side airbag. There are several types of system configuration for side impact sensing. In this paper, we adopt the acceleration-based remote sensing method for the side airbag control system. We mainly focus on the development of hardware and crash discrimination algorithm of remote sensing unit. The crash discrimination algorithm needs fast decision of airbag firing especially for high-speed side impact such as FMVSS 214 and EEVC tests. It is also required to distinguish between low-speed fire and no-fire events. The algorithm should have a sufficient safety margin against any misuse situation such as hammer blow, door slam, etc. This paper introduces several firing criteria such as acceleration. velocity and energy criteria that use physical value proportional to crash severity. We have made a simulation program by using Matlab/Simulink to implement the proposed algorithm. We have conducted an algorithm calibration by using real crash data for 2,500cc vehicle. The crash performance obtained by the simulation was verified through a pulse injection method. It turned out that the results satisfied the system requirements well.

Marine accidents are increasing as time goes on, in spite of lots of efforts are given. Marine accidents can be classified 3 categories those are ship's condition, navigator's condition and weather condition. In this paper, statistical analysis were carried using marine accidents data from 1997 to 2006. In order to analyze accident rate by time zone, ship's speed and finding distant, SPSS variance analysis was carried out. Results are followed. There was significant difference between time zone 20${\sim}$04 hours and other time zones. The accident rate in daytime was bigger than that at night. In case of the speed at collision, the speed of 5${\sim}$10 knot has significant difference to other speed cases. In finding distant cases, the case of less than 1 mile has significant difference to other distant cases.

Real-time location-sensing technology using location information collected from IoT devices is being applied for safety management purposes in many industries, such as ports. On the other hand, positional error is always present owing to the characteristics of GPS. Therefore, accident-risk detection algorithms must consider positional error. This paper proposes an methodology of calibration for falling object accident-risk-zone approach detection algorithm considering GPS errors. A probability density function was estimated, with positional error data collected from IoT devices as a probability variable. As a result of the verification, the algorithm showed a detection accuracy of 93% and 77%. Overall, the analysis results derived according to the GPS error level will be an important criterion for upgrading algorithms and real-time risk managements in the future.

Adverse weather (e.g. strong winds, snow and ice) will probably appear as a more serious and frequent threat to road traffic than in clear climate. Another consequence of climate change with a natural disastrous on road traffic is respond to traffic accident more the large and high-rise bridge zone, tunnel zone, inclined plane zone and de-icing zone than any other zone, which in turn calls for continuous adaption of monitoring procedures. Accident mitigating measures against this accident category may consist of intense winter maintenance, the use of road weather information systems for data collection and early warnings, road surveillance and traffic control. While hazard from reduced road friction due to snow and ice may be eliminated by snow removal and de-icing measures, the effect of strong winds on road traffic are not easily avoided. The purpose of the study described here, was to design of amber information the relationship between traffic safety, weather, user information on road weather and driving conditions in local-scale Geographic. The most applications are the optimization of the amber information definition, improvements to road surveillance, road weather monitoring and improved accuracy of user information delivery. Also, statistics on wind gust, surface condition, vehicle category and other relevant parameters for wind induced accidents provide basis for traffic control, early warning policies and driver education for improved road safety at bad weather-exposed locations.
A comprehensive cycle simulation was developed to predict the performance of gasoline engine including intake and exhaust systems with variation of operating conditions and design factors. In this study, the gas exchange model, compression and expansion model, two-zone combustion model and heat transfer model were used. In order to confirm the feasibility of the simulation program, the calculated results were compared with experimental results. P-$\theta$ diagrams, I. M. E. P. and S. F. C by means of calculation showed acceptable quantitative agreement with the experimental data. Therefore, this program is particularly well adapted to indicating the direction of the optimal design and optimal operating conditions for gasoline engine.
Commercial vehicle ESC assessment for curvature road was conducted. The previous study of ESC activation condition for losing controllability utilizing the test protocols of double lane change and sine with dwell method was conducted without considering the geometric complexity of roadway design. Since critical rollover accidents were frequently observed in the exit ramp zone, variety of curve, slope and bank have been added for analysis conditions. Detailed feature of the ramp including location, dimension and design characteristics have been analyzed from the typical trumpet type ramp design. Analyzing accident data from 2008, two specific ramps have been selected due to their complexity in design and severity in steering operation.
The extensive use of pretensioned prestressed concrete in the modem construction industry, together with wider application of pretensioned components for structural purposes requires some important consideration on the adequate transfer of prestress force into the concrete, especially around the end zones of pretensioned member. The main objective of this paper is to study the effects of various important parameters on the bond characteristics of prestressing strand around the end zone of high strength pretensioned concrete members. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up. The principal test variables considered were strand diameter, concrete strength, concrete cover size. The present study provides valuable test data for the realistic and accurate determination of transfer length, which can be efficiently used for improving the design equation of transfer length in pretensioned prestressed concrete members.
A traffic accident which happens in Expressway during dense fog is more likely to cause the sequential accidents and high death rate. So, the preventive measures shall be taken at dangerous areas to enhance the efficiency of roads and minimize the accidents and the resultant damages. So, it is necessary to find out the characteristics of freeway zone which has high risk of fog occurrence and to establish the comprehensive safety strategy on installation and operation of the safety equipment. In this study, I developed a fog forecasting model by using the freeway fog data. This model can be used as the fog forecasting model in dealing with fog problems when new road is planned. The model was developed by using a statistical analysis technique or the regression analysis, focusing on the variables such as geographical features and regional conditions, distances to water sources and the area of water source. I have segmented the models by classifying the area into inland area and coastal area. The distance to water source and area of the water source located around the freeway were found to be main factors causing fog.
