Adaptive Redundancy Scheme Using Channel State Estimation in Wireless LANs (무선 랜에서 채널 상태를 고려한 적응적 전송 방법)

  • WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networks) needs error recovery and flow control schemes to support reliable multicast protocol. Limited wireless bandwidth, as well as queuing losses caused by the asymmetric wired/wireless interactions, demands more effective approaches for reducing packet losses. Moreover, since the wireless channel is a shared broadcast medium, if sender receives feedback information simultaneously from several receivers, the feedback delays data frame transmission of forward direction by introducing channel congestion and burden at the sender. Therefore, it is important to minimize the amount of feedback information from receivers. In this paper, we propose an ARS(Adaptive Redundancy Scheme) that combines FEC(Forward Error Correction) using channel state estimation and ARQ(Automatic Repeat Request) both to reduce the amount of feedback information and the number of retransmissions and to guarantee high data reliability in a WLAN multicast environment. Performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by means of analysis and simulations in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. The results show that the proposed scheme reduces the amount of feedback information and the number of retransmissions and guarantees high data reliability, while keeping throughput efficiency similarly with the conventional FEC and ARQ scheme.

  • Due to rapid progress in data communications, we are able to acquire the information we need with ease. One means of achieving this is a parallel machine such as the MasPar. Although the parallel machine makes it possible to receive/transmit enormous quantities of data, because of the increasing volume of information that must be processed, it is necessary to transmit only a minimal amount of data bits. This paper suggests a new coding method for the parallel machine, which compresses the data by reducing redundancy. Parallel Dynamic Octal Compact Mapping (PDOCM) compresses at least 1 byte per word, compared with other coding techniques, and achieves a 54.188-fold speedup with 64 processors to transmit 10 million characters.

  • Supporting video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks is particularly challenging due to the time-varying and error-prone characteristics of the wireless channel. In this paper, we propose a joint optimization scheme for video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks. Our coding scheme, called Joint Source/Network Coding (JSNC), combines source coding and network coding to maximize the video quality under the limited wireless resources and coding constraints. JSNC segments the streaming data into generations at the source node and exploits the intra-session coding on both the source and the intermediate nodes. The size of the generation and the level of redundancy influence the streaming performance significantly and need to be determined carefully. We formulate the problem as an optimization problem with the objective of minimizing the end-to-end distortion by jointly considering the generation size and the coding redundancy. The simulation results demonstrate that, with the appropriate generation size and coding redundancy, the JSNC scheme can achieve an optimal performance for video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks.

Content Analysis on Housing Design Guidelines for the Disabled in Korea (국내 장애인주택 디자인가이드라인 내용분석 연구)

  • Purpose : With a recently growing population of the disabled, the importance of creating the living environment for them has been emphasized, making the design guidelines to play more important role in this sense. This research aims to generalize the existing design guidelines for the housing for the disabled, diagnose their problems, and suggest a systematic and consistent milestone of the guidelines developed in the future. Method : The analysis objects of this research are 1910 categories of the design guidelines for the domestic housing for the disabled, and the research removed the redundancy and separated multi-complex categories. A total of 1424 independent categories were extracted, and been conducted content analysis from three aspects of redundancy, sub-categorization system and descriptive form based on the extracted categories. Results : Redundancy analysis figured out important characteristics by space. Moreover, the current guideline system can be integrated by analysis of sub-category system. Lastly, the research found that the guidelines need to be understood more easily and suggested under accurate criteria by analyzing the descriptive forms. Implication : This research holds significance as a fundamental data to improve the design guidelines for the disabled in the future, ultimately contributing to a better quality of life of the disabled.

  • A flight control system for high reliability consists of complicated redundant structures. This redundancy can improve fault tolerant characteristics of system. So, a system manager is able to choose a suitable structure using analyzed quantitative data of various redundant structures. In this paper, we analyzed redundant characteristics and reliability. We defined necessary mathematical model for analysis tool. Then we compose a reliability block diagram analysis tool applying such defined analysis model using Simulink blocks. Finally we verified the analysis tool using a commercial tool.

  • Triple modular redundancy (TMR) systems can continue their mission by virtue of their structural redundancy even if one processor is attacked by faults. In this paper, we propose a new fault tolerance strategy by introducing checkpoints into the TMR system in which data saving and fault detection processes are separated while they corporate together in the conventional checkpoints. Faults in one processor are tolerated by synchronizing the state of three processors upon detecting faults. Simultaneous faults occurring to more than one processor are tolerated by re-executing the task from the latest checkpoint. We propose the checkpoint placement and fault detection strategy to maximize the probability of successful execution of a task within the given deadline. We develop the Markov chain model for the TMR system having the proposed checkpoint strategy, and derive the optimal fault detection and checkpoint interval.

  • In this paper, the data recovery performance of systematic erasure codes in burst loss environments is analyzed and the estimation method of redundant data according to loss characteristics is suggested. The burstness of packet loss is modeled by Gilbert model, and the performance of proposed packet loss recovery method in the case of using systematic erasure code is analyzed based on previous study on the loss recovery in the case of using erasure code. The required redundancy data fitting method for systematic erasure code in the condition of given loss property is suggested in the consideration of packet loss characteristics such as average packet loss rate and average loss length.

  • The emergence of Software Defined Networking (SDN) overcomes the limitations of traditional networking architectures. There are some advantages in SDN which are centralized global network view, programmability, and separation of the data plane and control plane. Due to the limitation of data plane storage capacity in SDN, it is necessary to process the redundancy rules of switch. In this paper, we propose a method for active detection and processing of redundant rules. We use the result generated by the customized probe package to detect redundant rules. And by checking the forwarding behavior of probe packets in the data plane, the redundancy rules are further processed. Furthermore, in order to quickly check the dynamic networks, we propose an incremental algorithms for rapidly evolve the network strategies. We conduct simulation experiments on Matlab to verify the feasibility of the algorithm. The influence of some parameters on the result are discussed.

  • Up to the present, many GIS logical data models have been proposed to incorporate time dimension into traditional 2-dimensional (2D space) GIS databases. However, these models are difficult to implementation of multi-dimensional GIS and have problems of significant data redundancy and search performance. This paper proposes a new storage strategy and a separate storage structure, that is composed of current database and past database, in order to reduce data redundancy and improve search performance of temporal query. Also we design moving algorithm for migration from current database to past database, and design efficient search algorithm for temporal query.

  • Time comparison techniques are required for generating and keeping Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and to distribute standard clocks. These techniques play an important role in various fields, including science, finance, military, and communication. Among these techniques, Two-Way Satellite Time and Frequency Transfer (TWSTFT) ensures a relatively high accuracy, with a time comparison accuracy at a nanosecond level. However, TWSTFT systems have some limitations, such as the dependency on extra network links. In this paper, we propose an improved method for TWSTFT system operation and design a message structure for the suggestion. Additionally, we estimate the data rate and redundancy for the new TWSTFT signal with the designed message structure.
