  • In this paper, wave absorbing characteristics of a horizontal submerged punching plate are investigated throughout the calculation and the experiment. The punching plate with the array of circular holes can force the flow to separate and to form eddies of high vorticity and cause significant energy loss. As an analytic tool, the linear water wave theory and the eigenfunction expansion method is applied. Darcy's law that the normal velocity of the fluid passing through the punching plate is linearly proportional to the pressure difference between two sides of the punching plate is assumed. The proportional constant called the porous coefficient is deeply dependent to the porosity. To obtain the relationship between the porosity and the porous coefficient the systematic model test for the punching plates with 6 different porosities is conducted at 2-dimensional wave tank. It is found that the porous coefficient is linearly proportional to the porosity(b=57.63P-0.9717). It is also noted that the optimal porosity value is near P=0.1 and the optimal range of submergence depth is $d/h\\leq0.2$ within entire frequency range.

  • In this paper, the wave forces on a cylindrical aquaculture fish cage, which consists of the porous mesh with the uniform porosity, are analyzed using matched eigenfunction expansion method. The boundary condition on the porous net is derived based on the Darcy's law, which implies that the velocity of the fluid passing through the net is linearly proportional to the pressure difference between two sides of the net. The wave forces and wave responses are investigated by changing the porous parameter of porous net as well as the submerged position (floating type, bottom-mounted type) of an aquaculture fish cage. It is found that the wave forces on a bottom-mounted type are largely decreased compared with that on a floating type. Also, the porosity of the netting structure plays an important role in reducing the wave forces and the wave elevation in the vicinity of an aquaculture fish cage.

  • Based on the hydroelastic theory and the matched eigenfunction expansion method(MEEM), the dynamic behavior of the porous flexible net sheet and wave forces have been investigated in monochromatic waves. The net sheet is installed vertically with the submergence depth. Top end of a net sheet is fixed and its lower end is attached by a clump weight. It is assumed that the initial tension is sufficiently large so that the effects of dynamictension variation can be neglected. The boundary condition on the porous flexible net sheet is derived based on Darcy's fine-pore model and body boundary condition. The developed analytic model can be extended to the impermeable/permeable vertical plate and the impermeable flexible membrane. The analytical model was used to study the influence of design parameters(wave characteristics, porosity, submergence depth, initial tension) on the response characteristics and wave load of the net sheet.

  • On the basis of flow resistance theory the conceptual model and related mathematical descriptions is proposed for resistance modeling of groundwater flow in CPM(continuum Porous medium), DFN(discrete fracture network) and fractured-porous medium. The proposed model is developed on the basis of finite volume method assuming steady-state, constant density groundwater flow. The basic approach of the method is to evaluate inter-block flow resistance values for a staggered grid arrangement, i.e. fluxes are stored at cell walls and scalars at cell centers. The balance of forces, i.e. the Darcy law, is utilized for each control volume centered around the point where the velocity component is stored. The transmissivity (or permeability) at the interface is assumed to be the harmonic average of neighboring blocks. Flow resistance theory was utilized to relate the fluxes between the grid blocks with residual pressures. The flow within porous medium is described by three dimensional equations and that within an individual fracture is described by a two dimensional equivalent of the flow equations for a porous medium. Newly proposed models would contribute to develop flow simulation techniques with various matrix characteristics.

  • numerical model is developed to estimate gas flow in the landfill site. Darcy's law, the mass conservation law, and the ideal gas state equation are combined to compose the governing equation for the steady-state and transient-state gas flows. The finite element method (FEM) is used as the numerical solution scheme. Two-dimensional radial symmetric triangular ring element is used to discretize the simulation domain. The steady state model developed in this study is compared with AIRFLOW that is a commercial model developed by Hydrologic Inc. Mass balance test is performed on the transient gas flow simulation. The developed model is applied to analyze the gas extraction experiment performed by Daewoo Institute of Construction Technology at the Nanjido landfill in 1993. The developed model was registered at Korea Computer Program Protection Foundation.

  • Increases in excess pore water pressure without change of surcharge load were reported in clay underneath embankment at Berthierville and Olga sites after the end of construction. These abnormal phenomena could not be explained by classical consolidation theory. This paper presents a nonlinear viscoplastic model to interpret an increase in pore water pressure on natural clay, The proposed model can consider the combined processes of pore water pressure dissipation according to Darcy's law and pore water pressure generation due to viscoplastic strain, as well as time-dependent viscoplastic behaviour and strain rate dependency of preconsolidation pressure. The calculated results using numerical analysis are compared with measured ones under embankments built on soft clay at Berthierville and Olga in Quebec, Canada. It may be possible to explain the phenomenon of excess pore water pressure increase after the end of construction using the proposed nonlinear viscoplastic model.

  • This paper presents a preliminary study for air-tightness evaluation of vacuum tube structures for super-speed tube railway systems. The formula for flow rate of the air caused by the pressure difference of the inside and outside of the tube structure is derived based on Darcy's law. A test is then performed to measure the air-permeability of concrete with various compressive strengths, the result of which is used for analytical simulation of the air intrusion for a tube structure with a preliminarily defined section. It has been shown that concrete with the compressive strength of at least more than 50MPa is recommended for effective operation and maintenance of the vacuum pump systems, as the air-permeability of concrete is inversely proportional to the exponent of its compressive strength.

  • In order to increase the stability of existing breakwater, new caissons are installed on the back or the front of existing caissons. It is very important to evaluate wave force and wave run-up according to the change of porosity among caissons and the energy loss due to separation effects. In this study, we use the eigenfunction expansion method with Darcy's law, which describes the flow of a fluid through a porous plate, to analyze the characteristics of wave on circular breakwater of double array for various porous coefficients. To verify the numerical method, the comparison between present results and Sankarbabu et al. (2008) is made. The wave force and the wave run-up acting on each dual cylindrical caisson are calculated for various parameters by considering the energy loss and the change of porosity.
