A new mechanical-electrical hybrid passive dam ping treatment is proposed to improve the performance of structural vibration control. The proposed hybrid passive damping system consists of a constrained layer damping treatment and a shunt circuit. In a passive mechanical constrained layer damping, a viscoelastic material damping layer is used to control the structural vibration modes in high frequency range. The passive electrical damping is designed for targeting the vibration amplitude in the low frequency range. The governing equations of motion are derived through the Hamilton's principle. The obtained mathematical model is validated experimentally. The presented theoretical and experimental techniques provide invaluable tools for controlling the multiple modes of a vibrating structure over a wide frequency band.

Active control of flexural vibrations of smart laminated composite beams has been carried out using piezoceramic sensor/actuator and viscoelastic material. The beams with passive constrained layer damping have been analyzed by formulating the equations of motion through the use of extended Hamilton's principle. The dynamic characteristics such as damping ratio and modal damping of the beam are calculated for various fiber orientations by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity.
The purpose of this study is to propose a procedure for evaluating quantitatively the increase of the equivalent damping ratio of a structure with passive/active vibration control systems subjected to a stationary wind load. A Lyapunov function governing the response of a structure and its differential equation are formulated first. Then the state-space equation of the structure coupled with the secondary damping system is solved. The results are substituted into the differential equation of the Lyapunov function and its derivative. The equivalent damping ratios are obtained from the Lyapunov function of the combined system and its derivative, and are used to assess the control effect of various damping devices quantitatively. The accuracy of the proposed procedure is confirmed by applying it to a structure with nonlinear as well as linear passive/active control systems.

This paper proposes CDC (Continuous Damping Control) algorithm and verifies in multi-body dynamic vehicle. In order to distinguish a road profile on driving, waviness calculated by the filtered vertical-accelerations of sprung and unsprung masses is introduced. Sky-hook control is used at a low waviness road and constant damping level control is used at a high waviness road, where the hard damping level is determined by waviness, roll rate, acceleration, and deceleration. The damping levels of ride, anti-roll, anti-squat, and anti-dive modules are calculated by tuning parameters which is dependent upon vehicle velocity. Therefore this high tunable algorithm is useful to improve the ride and handling performance under various driving conditions. In the simulations, tire and dampers are modelled by SWIFT (Short Wavelength Intermediate Frequency Tire) model and 1st order delay model, and results are compared with conventional damper's.
Ferrofluids are a special category of smart nanomaterials which shows normal liquid behavior coupled with superparamagnetic properties. One of the earliest and most prospective applications of ferrofluids is in damping, which has prominent advantages compared with conventional damping devices: simplicity, flexibility and reliability. This paper presents the basic principles that play a major role in the design of ferrofluid damping devices. The characteristics of typical ferrofluid damping devices including dampers, vibration isolators, and dynamic vibration absorbers are compared and summarized, and then recent progress of vibration energy harvesters based on ferrofluid is briefly described. Additionally, we proposed a novel ferrofluid dynamic vibration absorber in this paper, and its damping efficiency was verified with experiments. In the end, the critical problems and research directions of the ferrofluid damping technology in the future are raised.

The purpose of this study is to propose the general method for evaluating the equivalent damping ratios of a structure with supplemental response control dampers. We define Lyapunov function of which derivative can be expressed in autoregressive form and evaluate the equivalent damping ratios by using Lyapunov function and its derivative. This Lyapunov function may be called as generalized structural energy. In this study, it is assumed that the response of a structure is stationary random process and control dampers do not affect the modal shapes of a structure, and the structure has proportional damping. Proposed method can be used to get the equivalent damping ratios of a structure with non-linear control dampers such as friction dampers as well as linear control dampers. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method. we evaluate the equivalent damping ratios of a structure with viscous dampers. AMDs. and friction dampers. The equivalent damping ratios from proposed method are compared to those from eigenvalue analysis for linear control dampers. and those from time history analysis for non-linear control dampers. respectively.
The droop-based control strategy is widely applied in the interfacing inverters for distributed generation. This can be a problem since low-frequency stability issues may be encountered in droop-based microgrid. The objective of this paper is to classify, evaluate and compare various low-frequency damping methods. First, low-frequency stability problems are analyzed and an equivalent model of a droop-controlled inverter is investigated to classify the damping methods into the source-type damping strategies and the impedance-type damping strategies. Moreover, the lead-lag compensation network insertion control is proposed as a beneficial part of the source-type damping strategies. Then, the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of damping methods are theoretically evaluated and experimentally tested. Furthermore, the damping methods are comprehensively compared to illustrate the application field of each method. Finally, the synthesis of different damping methods to enhance the low-frequency stability is discussed and experimental validation is presented.
Inerter-based damping devices (IBBDs), which consist of inerter, spring and viscous damper, have been extensively investigated in vehicle suspension systems and demonstrated to be more effective than the traditional control devices with spring and viscous damper only. In the present study, the control performance on cable vibration reduction was studied for four different inerter-based damping devices, namely the parallel-connected viscous mass damper (PVMD), series-connected viscous mass damper (SVMD), tuned inerter dampers (TID) and tuned viscous mass damper (TVMD). Firstly the mechanism of the ball screw inerter is introduced. Then the state-space formulation of the cable-TID system is derived as an example for the cable-IBBDs system. Based on the complex modal analysis, single-mode cable vibration control analysis is conducted for PVMD, SVMD, TID and TVMD, and their optimal parameters and the maximum attainable damping ratios of the cable/damper system are obtained for several specified damper locations and modes in combination by the Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm. Lastly, optimal design of PVMD is developed for multi-mode vibration control of cable, and the results of damping ratio analysis are validated through the forced vibration analysis in a case study by numerical simulation. The results show that all the four inerter-based damping devices significantly outperform the viscous damper for single-mode vibration control. In the case of multi-mode vibration control, PVMD can provide more damping to the first four modes of cable than the viscous damper does, and their maximum control forces under resonant frequency of harmonic forced vibration are nearly the same. The results of this study clearly demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of PVMD in cable vibration control.

The absorbing material is mostly used to changing the acoustic energy to the heat energy in the passive control, and that consists of the porous media. That controls an air borne noise while the stiffened plates, damping material and additional mass control a structure borne noise. The additional mass can decrease the sound by mass effect and shift of natural frequency, and damping material can decrease the sound by damping effect. The passive acoustic control using these kinds of control materials has an advantage that is possible to control the acoustic in the wide frequency band and the whole space at a price as compared with the active control using the various electronic circuit and actuator. But the space efficiency decreased and the control ability isn't up to the active control. So it is necessary to maximize the control ability in the specific frequency to raise the capacity of passive control minimizing the diminution of space efficiency such an active control. Therefore, the characteristics of control materials and the optimum layout of control materials that attached to the boundary of structure-acoustic coupled cavity were studied using sequential optimization on this study.

The Active Constrained Layer Damping(ACLD) combines the simplicity and reliability of passive damping with the low weight and high efficiency of active control to attain high damping characteristics. The proposed ACLD treatment consists of a viscoelastic damping which is sandwiched between an active piezoelectric layer and a host structure. In this manner, the smart ACLD consists of a Passive Constrained Layer Damping(PCLD) which is augmented with an active control in response to the structural vibrations. The arc type shell model is introduced to describe the interactions between the vibrating host structure, piezoelectric actuator and viscoelastic damping. The system is modeled by applying ARMAX model and changing a state-space form through the system identification method. An optimum control law for the piezo actuator is obtain by LQR(Linear Quadratic Regulator) method. The performance of the ACLD system is determined and compared with PCLD in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the ACLD treatment. Also, the actuation capability of a piezo actuator is examined experimentally by varying thickness of viscoelastic material(VEM).
