  • Precision stages for 6-DOF positioning, actuated by PZT stacks, which are fed back by gap sensors and guided by flexure hinges, have enlarged their application territory in micro/nano manufacturing and measurement area. The precision stages inherently have such limitations as the nonlinearity between input and output in piezoelectric stacks, feedback signal noise in precision capacitive gap sensors and low material damping in precision kinematic linkages of mechanical flexures. To surmount these limitations, the precision stage is modeled with physics-based variables, which are identified by transient response correspondence, and a gain margin calculation algorithm using the Prandtl-Ishlinskii model and describing function is newly developed to assess system performance more precisely than linear controller design schemes. Based on such analyses, a precision positioning controller is designed. Excellent positioning accuracy with rapid settlement accomplished by the controller is shown in step responses of the closed-loop system.

A nonlinear structural experiment platform with adjustable plastic hinges: analysis and vibration control

  • The construction of an experimental nonlinear structural model with little cost and unlimited repeatability for vibration control study represents a challenging task, especially for material nonlinearity. This paper reports the design, analysis and vibration control of a nonlinear structural experiment platform with adjustable hinges. In our approach, magnetorheological rotary brakes are substituted for the joints of a frame structure to simulate the nonlinear material behaviors of plastic hinges. For vibration control, a separate magnetorheological damper was employed to provide semi-active damping force to the nonlinear structure. A dynamic neural network was designed as a state observer to enable the feedback based semi-active vibration control. Based on the dynamic neural network observer, an adaptive fuzzy sliding mode based output control was developed for the magnetorheological damper to suppress the vibrations of the structure. The performance of the intelligent control algorithm was studied by subjecting the structure to shake table experiments. Experimental results show that the magnetorheological rotary brake can simulate the nonlinearity of the structural model with good repeatability. Moreover, different nonlinear behaviors can be achieved by controlling the input voltage of magnetorheological rotary damper. Different levels of nonlinearity in the vibration response of the structure can be achieved with the above adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control algorithm using a dynamic neural network observer.

좌굴방지 가새가 설치된 건물의 지진응답 (Seismic Response of Structures with Buckling-Restrained Braces)

  • 본 연구에서는 죄굴이 방지된 비부착 가새가 설치된 철골조 건물의 에너지 소산능력과 지진응답에 대하여 연구하였다. 먼저 조화하중을 받는 단자유도계 구조물을 대상으로 변수분석을 수행하고 가새의 최적항복강도를 구하였다. 다자 유도계 골조구조물의 비선형 시간이력 해석을 통하여 다양한 크기와 강도를 가진 가새가 설치된 구조물의 지진응답을 분석하고, 가새의 적당한 층별 분배방법을 찾기 위하여 여러 가지 분배방법을 적용하였다. 해석결과에 따르면 일반적으로 가새의 강성이 증가함에 따라 구조물의 최대변위는 감소하였다. 그러나 구조물의 고유주기 및 하중에 따라 가새의 강성이 커짐에 따라 구조물의 최대 변위와 누적된 손상이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.

Site specific ground motion simulation and seismic response analysis for microzonation of Kolkata

  • The spatial variation of ground motion in Kolkata Metropolitan District (KMD) has been estimated by generating synthetic ground motion considering the point source model coupled with site response analysis. The most vulnerable source was identified from regional seismotectonic map for an area of about 350 km radius around Kolkata. The rock level acceleration time histories at 121 borehole locations in Kolkata for the vulnerable source, Eocene Hinge Zone, due to maximum credible earthquake (MCE) moment magnitude 6.2 were generated by synthetic ground motion model. Soil investigation data of 121 boreholes were collected from the report of Soil Data Bank Project, Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Surface level ground motion parameters were determined using SHAKE2000 software. The results are presented in the form of peak ground acceleration (PGA) at rock level and ground surface, amplification factor, and the response spectra at the ground surface for frequency 1.5 Hz, 3 Hz, 5 Hz and 10 Hz and 5% damping ratio. Site response study shows higher PGA in comparison with rock level acceleration. Maximum amplification in some portion in KMD area is found to be as high as 3.0 times compared to rock level.

축방향철근 연결상세에 따른 철근콘크리트 원형교각의 내진성능 (Seismic Performance of Circular RC Bridge Columns with Longitudinal Steel Connection Details)

  • 철근콘크리트 교각의 소성힌지 구간에서의 축방향철근의 겹침이음은 내진성능면에서 바람직하지 않으나, 축방향철근의 겹침이음을 피하는 철근상세가 현실적으로 어려운 실정이며 현행 도로교설계기준에는 축방향철근 겹침이음 금지에 관한 특별한 설계기준이 없는 상태이다. 본 연구는 반복하중을 받는 철근콘크리트 원형교각의 축방향철근 연결상세에 따른 내진성능을 평가하기 위해 축방향철근 연결상세에 따른 7개 그룹 총 21개의 원형나선철근 기둥 시험체에 대한 준정적실험을 수행하였다. 실험결과 축방향철근이 겹침이음 되어있는 시험체의 경우, 단일 축방향철근으로 구성된 시험체보다 낮은 내진성능을 나타내었으며 특히, 모든 축방향철근이 겹침이음 되어있는 경우 내진성능이 상당히 저하되었다. 그러나, 축방향철근을 기계적 연결장치로 연결한 시험체의 경우 단일축방향철근 상세를 가지는 시험체와 유사한 내진성능을 나타내었다. 본 연구의 최종목적은 철근콘크리트 교각의 시공성 향상을 위한 축방향철근 연결상세의 제시 및 한정연성 내진설계를 위한 실험적 기초자료의 제공과 함께 성능단계별 축방향철근 연결상세에 따른 성능 및 손상평가를 위한 정량적 수치와 경향을 제공하기 위한 것이며, 극한변위, 극한드리프트비율, 변위연성도, 응답수정계수, 등가점성감쇠비, 잔류변형지수, 유효강성 등의 주요 내진성능평가 변수들에 대한 분석결과를 나타내었다.

Quasi-static test of the precast-concrete pile foundation for railway bridge construction

  • Precast concrete elements in accelerated bridge construction (ABC) extends from superstructure to substructure, precast pile foundation has proven a benefit for regions with fragile ecological environment and adverse geological condition. There is still a lack of knowledge of the seismic behavior and performance of the precast pile foundation. In this study, a 1/8 scaled model of precast pile foundation with elevated cap is fabricated for quasi-static test. The failure mechanism and responses of the precast pile-soil interaction system are analyzed. It is shown that damage occurs primarily in precast pile-soil interaction system and the bridge pier keeps elastic state because of its relatively large cross-section designed for railways. The vulnerable part of the precast pile with elevated cap is located at the embedded section, but no plastic hinge forms along the pile depth under cyclic loading. Hysteretic curves show no significant strength degradation but obvious stiffness degradation throughout the loading process. The energy dissipation capacity of the precast pile-soil interaction system is discussed by using index of the equivalent viscous damping ratio. It can be found that the energy dissipation capacity decreases with the increase of loading displacement due to the unyielding pile reinforcements and potential pile uplift. It is expected to promote the use of precast pile foundation in accelerated bridge construction (ABC) of railways designed in seismic regions.

  • 본 연구에서는 비내진 교각의 내진성능과 휨-전단 거동을 파악하고자 형상비 4.5인 정사각형의 중실 및 중공단면 철근콘크리트 교각실험체를 제작하여 일정한 축력하에서 변위비 등급을 증가시켜 가면서 횡하중을 가력하는 실험을 수행하였다. 본 연구는 철근콘크리트 교각의 한정연성 내진설계를 위한 실험적 기초자료의 제공과 함께 성능단계별 교각성능 및 손상평가를 위한 정량적 수치와 경향을 제공하기 위한 것이며, 파괴거동, 극한변위, 극한드리프트비율, 변위연성도, 응답수정계수, 등가점성감쇠비, 잔류변형지수, 유효강성, 철근 변형률 등의 주요 내진성능 인자들에 대한 분석결과와 비선형 해석 결과를 나타내었다.

Design and calibration of a semi-active control logic to mitigate structural vibrations in wind turbines

  • The design of a semi-active (SA) control system addressed to mitigate wind induced structural demand to high wind turbine towers is discussed herein. Actually, the remarkable growth in height of wind turbines in the last decades, for a higher production of electricity, makes this issue pressing than ever. The main objective is limiting bending moment demand by relaxing the base restraint, without increasing the top displacement, so reducing the incidence of harmful "p-delta" effects. A variable restraint at the base, able to modify in real time its mechanical properties according to the instantaneous response of the tower, is proposed. It is made of a smooth hinge with additional elastic stiffness and variable damping respectively given by springs and SA magnetorheological (MR) dampers installed in parallel. The idea has been physically realized at the Denmark Technical University where a 1/20 scale model of a real, one hundred meters tall wind turbine has been assumed as case study for shaking table tests. A special control algorithm has been purposely designed to drive MR dampers. Starting from the results of preliminary laboratory tests, a finite element model of such structure has been calibrated so as to develop several numerical simulations addressed to calibrate the controller, i.e., to achieve as much as possible different, even conflicting, structural goals. The results are definitely encouraging, since the best configuration of the controller leaded to about 80% of reduction of base stress, as well as to about 30% of reduction of top displacement in respect to the fixed base case.

장방형 띠철근을 이용한 팔각형 플레어 RC 기둥의 내진성능 (Seismic Performance of Octagonal Flared RC Columns using Oblong Hoops)

  • 횡방향철근은 기둥의 소성힌지구간에 충분한 구속효과, 축방향철근의 좌굴방지와 연성거동을 확보하기 위해 적용된다. 기둥에서 사각형 후프 띠철근과 보강 띠철근의 조립 및 배근방법은 시공이 까다롭고 많은 횡방향철근량이 요구된다. 본 논문에서, 이러한 문제점들을 해결하기 위하여 장방형 단면과 플레어 기둥의 횡구속을 위한 장방형 후프 띠철근을 사용한 새로운 횡구속 방법이 제안되었다. 개발된 장방형 후프 띠철근 상세는 장방형 단면과 플레어 기둥의 시공성과 경제성을 향상시켜줄 수 있는 하나의 대안으로서 적용 가능한 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구의 최종목적은 철근콘크리트 교각의 시공성 향상을 위한 장방형 후프 띠철근 상세의 제시와 실험적 기초자료의 제공과 함께 하중단계별 성능 및 손상평가를 위한 정량적 수치와 경향을 제공하기 위한 것이며, 극한변위, 극한드리프트비율, 변위연성도, 응답수정계수, 등가점성감쇠비, 잔류변형지수, 유효강성 등의 주요 내진성능평가 변수들에 대한 분석결과를 나타내었다.

Dynamic experimental study on single and double beam-column joints in steel traditional-style buildings

  • In order to study the failure mode and seismic behavior of the interior-joint in steel traditional-style buildings, a single beam-column joint and a double beam-column joint were produced according to the relevant building criterion of ancient architectural buildings and the engineering instances, and the dynamic horizontal loading test was conducted by controlling the displacement of the column top and the peak acceleration of the actuator. The failure process of the specimens was observed, the bearing capacity, ductility, energy dissipation capacity, strength and stiffness degradation of the specimens were analyzed by the load-displacement hysteresis curve and backbone curve. The results show that the beam end plastic hinge area deformed obviously during the loading process, and tearing fracture of the base metal at top and bottom flange of beam occurred. The hysteresis curves of the specimens are both spindle-shaped and plump. The ultimate loads of the single beam-column joint and double beam-column joint are 48.65 kN and 70.60 kN respectively, and the equivalent viscous damping coefficients are more than 0.2 when destroyed, which shows the two specimens have great energy dissipation capacity. In addition, the stiffness, bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity of the double beam-column joint are significantly better than that of the single beam-column joint. The ductility coefficients of the single beam-column joint and double beam-column joint are 1.81 and 1.92, respectively. The cracks grow fast when subjected to dynamic loading, and the strength and stiffness degradation is also degenerated quickly.
