Asphalt concrete pavement can be widely seen on urban streets, highways, parking lots, and bike trails. Asphalt concrete pavement is relatively temperature sensitive materials due to the viscoelastic behavior, which can be defined as flexible performance in summer and rigid performance in winter. In terms of maintenance, it can be fixed quite easily if damaged. In addition, asphalt concrete pavement is generally found to be black and grey in color. However, several colors can be adopted to change the appearance of plain old boring, black and grey. Generally, there are two types of color systems in hot mix asphalt concrete materials. One system uses colored cementitious material that is applied to pavement surface through coating the surface of the asphalt pavement. The major disadvantage to this system requires a careful skill set to be used on the construction site in order to prevent taking off the cementitious material. The other coloring system colors the asphalt hot mixtures through using color additives. The main advantage to this system is that the asphalt pavement layer is colored using the same techniques that are already used in paving. The disadvantage is that the colors are limited to mainly reds and browns. In this study, a suggested color additive was evaluated, based on rutting, moisture sensitivity, and fatigue cracking performance.

The freshwater lakes located at the fringe of urban cities are a habitat for diverse organisms. However, they are facing severe danger of environment deterioration and water pollution caused by reckless development of the area. In this study, an ecological management plan was suggested to promote the biodiversity through appointing management area based on the research and analysis data of flora and fauna as well as maintain biodiversity and harmonize utilization of freshwater lakes such as Duryang Reservoir at Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do. Base on the data of ecological research and analysis, this study conducted research on biotope assessment, wild life habitat assessment and presence of protected species. As a result, the ecosystem conservation area including multi-layer structured natural forests, waterside and wetland that are home to various species and the edge area with high habitat diversity were recognized as highly preservable regions. Management areas were ecologically disturbed region, highly polluted commercial district and damaged waterside caused by fishing. Proactive management must be implemented through vegetation management such as vegetation transition and shrub planting as well as establishing pollutant management system. The deterioration of waterside and forest vegetation of freshwater lake has a direct influence on biodiversity and water quality. Therefore, the conservation area and development area should be totally separated from each other, and the development area must be restored and managed strictly.

Human epidermal stem cells(ESCs) residing in the basement membrane of the skin have an important role in maintenance of skin homeostasis of epidermal layer. Although, ESCs provide new cells to repair damaged tissue in response to tissue injury, subsets of stem cells remain in the quiescent state protected from differentiation and senescence for prolonged survivals. In this perspective, the stem cell niche, which is specific microenvironment composed of niche cells and an extracellular matrix(ECM), supplies the relevant signal to save stem cells from microenvironmental damages. The expression of stemness marker on the surface of ESCs contributes to the attachment on their ECM of the basement membrane, which lead to growth potential and apoptotic resistance against environmental stimuli. In this study, we observed that UV irradiation, a major factor of environmental stimuli, reduced the expression of α2, β1 and α6 integrin in ESCs. Rhus Semialata M extract(RSE) showed inhibitory effect on the UVB-induced reduction of integrin expression. Furthermore, RSE could upregulate the expression of Col-IV and Laminin, which contribute to the attachment of ESCs. These results indicated that RSE could be a potent ingredient for the protection of ESCs from UV irradiation by increasing the expression of integrin and substrate ECM components at their niche.

The Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella, is one of the most important pests of stored food in the food processing industry worldwide. To control the Indian meal moth, methyl bromide, phosphine, high carbon dioxide, sulfuryl fluoride and plant essential oil fumigation have been considered. However, these treatments have disadvantages. For example, depleting the ozone layer, showing resistance in insect, low control efficacy or need high cost for treatment. Chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) is strong disinfectant and insecticide. The gas caused a malfunction in enzymes. The oxidative stress induced by $ClO_2$ gas treatment damaged to a physiological system and all life stages of P. interpunctella. The gaseous $ClO_2$ is a convincing alternative to methyl bromide for controlling P. interpunctella. The gaseous $ClO_2$ was generated by a chlorine dioxide generator (PurgoFarm Co., Ltd., Hwasung, Korea). It generated highly pure $ClO_2$ gas and the gas blown out through a vent into a test chamber. Gas entry to the chamber was automatically controlled and monitored by a PortaSene II gas leak detector (Analytical Technology, Collegeville, PA, USA). The properly prepared eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults of P. interpunctella were used in this experiment. Data were analyzed using SAS 9.4. Percentage data were statistically analyzed after arcsine-root transformation. Analysis of variance was performed using general linear model, and means were separated by the least significant difference test at P < 0.05. Fumigation is an effective management technique for controlling all stages of P. interpunctella. We found that $ClO_2$ gas treatment directly effects on egg, larvae, pupae and adults of P. interpunctella. The gas treatment with proper concentration for over a day achieved 100 % mortality in all stages of P. interpunctella and short time treatment or low concentration gas treatment results showed that the egg hatchability, pupation rate, and adult emergency rate were lowered compare with untreated control. Also, abnormal pupae or adult rate were increased. Gaseous $ClO_2$ treatment induced insecticidal reactive oxygen species (ROS), and it resulted in fatal oxidative stress in P. interpunctella. Taken together, these results showed that exposure proper concentration and time of the gas control all stages of P. interpunctella by inducing fatal oxidative stress. Further studies will be required to apply the gas treatment under real-world condition and to understanding physiological reaction in P. interpunctella caused by oxidative stress.
The effects of iron on gill tissue and metabolic rate represented by oxygen consumption of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus were determined. The effects were further studied by means of survival rate of the fish exposed to a serial concentrations of iron. The olive flounder exposed to iron concentrations over 0.93 mg/$\ell$ showed curvature and terminal clubbing of gill lamellae at 2 weeks post-exposure. In iron concentration 4.89 mg/$\ell$, gill of the fish were seriously damaged just after 2 weeks, showing hyperplasia of filament epithelia, deformation of lamella epithelia, chloride cell damage, and separation of lamella epithelial layer, Gills exposed to 9.78 mg/$\ell$ iron concentration resulted in fusion and necrosis of the lamellae after 2 weeks. Significant decreases of metabolic rate of the fish were observed after 4 weeks at iron concentration 0,93 mg/$\ell$ and after 2 weeks at iron concentrations over 4.89 mg/$\ell$. Survival rate of the olive flounder decreased significantly after 4 weeks at the iron concentration over 4.89 mg/$\ell$. These results lead us to conclude that, as far as the iron effects are concerned, its concentrations should not exceed at least more than 0.93 mg/$\ell$ in the fish farm and coastal waters for normal growth of the olive flounder.
High alumina refractory used in a coal gasifier was analyzed and the degradation mechanism by molten slag was investigated. The depth of refractory severely damaged by slag varied between 12~40 mm, including the adhered slag layer. The sample also showed the cracks formed in parallel to the slag/refractory interface. The degree of degradation varied with the micro-structures in the refractory. Fused alumina grains showed the uneven boundary and pore formation just along the edges, while the tablet alumina showed the slag penetrated between sintered alumina around which the formation of Al-Fe phase was observed. Calcium aluminate cements were not observed at the high temperature zone near the slag/refractory interface, probably due to dissolution into molten slag. Around large grains of alumina, rod shape alumina, which appeared to be recrystallized during cooling, were observed, and large pores were also formed around those grains. Therefore, in high alumina refractories, hot molten slag dissolves the bonding phase and rod-shape alumina phase is recrystallized upon cooling. During this process, cracks are developed due to structural change, and the degradation occurs by physical causes such as structural spalling.
The simple microgel electrophoresis of single cells, a 'comet assay', on fruit seeds enabled the rapid identification of irradiated fruits by comparing the intact non-irradiated cells and the damaged cells of irradiated fruits. Grapes and plums were irradiated with 0.1, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0 kGy and strawberries, peaches, apples, and nectarines were irradiated with only 1.0 kGy. Seeds were isolated, crushed, and the suspended cells were embedded in an agarose layer. After lysis of the cells, they were subjected to microgel electrophoresis for 2 minutes, and then stained. The DNA radiation-induced fragmentation of all the fruits stretched and migrated out of the cells forming a tail toward the anode giving the appearance of a comet, while the undamaged cells appeared as intact nuclei without tails. Grape and plum seeds irradiated at 0.5 kGy and higher showed significant increases in tail length. With increasing the irradiation doses, longer extention of the DNA from the nucleus toward the anode was observed. Strawberry, peach, apple, and nectarine seeds irradiated with 1.0 kGy also showed the longer tails than non-irradiated ones. DNA comet assay as a rapid and inexpensive screening technique could be an officially validated method for the detection of irradiated fruits.

The LPR(License plate recognition) system has been developed to efficient control for complex traffic environment and currently be used in many places. However, because of light, noise, background changes, environmental changes, damaged plate, it only works limited environment, so it is difficult to use in real-time. This paper presents a heuristic segmentation algorithm for robust to noise and illumination changes and introduce a real-time license plate recognition system using it. In first step, We detect the plate utilized Haar-like feature and Adaboost. This method is possible to rapid detection used integral image and cascade structure. Second step, we determine the type of license plate with adaptive histogram equalization, bilateral filtering for denoise and segment accurate character based on adaptive threshold, pixel projection and associated with the prior knowledge. The last step is character recognition that used histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) and multi-layer perceptron(MLP) for number recognition and support vector machine(SVM) for number and Korean character classifier respectively. The experimental results show license plate detection rate of 94.29%, license plate false alarm rate of 2.94%. In character segmentation method, character hit rate is 97.23% and character false alarm rate is 1.37%. And in character recognition, the average character recognition rate is 98.38%. Total average running time in our proposed method is 140ms. It is possible to be real-time system with efficiency and robustness.
Distribution of rhEGF in the skin, plasma and several organ tissues following topical application of $^{125}I-rhEGF$ (0.4${\mu}$Ci) solution in 25% Pluronic F-127 on 154$mm^2$ normal and damaged (burned and stripped) skins of hairless mice was examined. The radioactivity in the stripped skin tissues increased as a function of time, and was 10-20 times higher than that in the normal and burned skins. The fractions of intact drug in the skin tissues were 40-60% for the normal and burned skins, and 60-80% for the stripped skin. It indicates that the stratum corneum layer behaves as a barrier for the dermal penetration of the drug. The radioactivity in the plasma was much higher for the stripped skin than for the normal and burned skins. However, the concentration of intact drug in the stripped skin was comparable to those in the normal and burned skins indicating most severe degradation (or metabolism) of the drug in the stripped skin. As a result, the fraction of intact drug in the plasma was lowest for the stripped skin (<10%). Body organ distribution of the drug was much higher for the stripped skin. The concentration in the stomach. Both in total radioactivity and intact drug, showed more than 10-times higher value than in the other organs (liver, kidney and spleen). The fraction of intact drug in each organ tissue was below 10-20%. And generally lowest for the stripped skin. The lowest fraction of the drug for the stripped skin could not be explained by the activity of the aminopeptidases in the skin since it was lower for the stripped skin than for the normal skin. Thereover, the fraction of intact drug appears to be determined by the balance between dermal uptake and systemic elimination of the drug, for example. The mechanism of dermal uptake of rhEGF was examined by topical applying 200${\mu}$l of 25% Pluronic F-127 solution containing 0.4 ${\mu}$Ci of $^{125}I-rhEGF$ and 0.14${\mu}$Ci of $^{14}C$-inulin (a marker of passive diffusion). The radioactivity of $^{125}I-rhEGF$ at each sampling time point (0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 8hr) was correlated (p<0.05) with the corresponding radioactivity of $^{14}C$-inulin. It appears to indicate the rhEGF may be uptaken into the skins mainly by the passive diffusion. This hypothesis was supported by the constant specific binding of EGF to the skin homogenates regardless of the skin models. Receptor mediated endocytosis (RME) appears to contribute negligibly, if any, to the overall uptake process.

Reactive ion etching (RIE) technique for maskless surface texturing of mc-silicon solar wafers has been applied and succeed in fabricating a grass-like black-silicon with an average reflectance of $4{\pm}1%$ in a wavelength range of 300~1,200 nm. In order to investigate the optimized texturing conditions for mass production of high quantum efficiency solar cell Surface characteristics such as the spatial distribution of average reflectance, micrscopic surface morphology and minority carrier lifetime were monitored for samples from saw-damaged $15.6{\times}15.6\;cm^2$ bare wafer to key-processed wafers as well as the mc-Si solar cells. We observed that RIE textured wafers reveal lower average reflectance along from center to edges by 1% and referred the origin to the non-uniform surface structures with a depth of 2 times deeper and half-maximum width of 3 times. Samples with anti-reflection coating after forming emitter layer also revealed longer minority carrier lifetime by 40% for the edge compared to wafer center due to size effects. As results, mc-Si solar cells with RIE-textured surface also revealed higher efficiency by 2% and better external quantum efficiency by 15% for edge positions with higher height.
