Among nondestructive damage detection methods, impedance-based methods have been recognized as an effective technique for damage identification in many kinds of structures. This paper proposes a method to detect cracks in metal structures by combining electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) responses and artificial neural networks (ANN). Firstly, the theories of EMI responses and impedance-based damage detection methods are described. Secondly, the reliability of numerical simulations for impedance responses is demonstrated by comparing to pre-published results for an aluminum beam. Thirdly, the proposed method is used to detect cracks in the beam. The RMSD (root mean square deviation) index is used to alarm the occurrence of the cracks, and the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) ANN is employed to identify the location and size of the cracks. The selection of the effective frequency range is also investigated. The analysis results reveal that the proposed method accurately detects the cracks' occurrence, location, and size in metal structures.
PE piping, which has advantages in terms of construction convenience and economy, is widely used for underground burial in the domestic urban gas field. These PE pipes use squeeze-off in many sites to block gas flow during maintenance and repair work. Squeeze-off refers to a method of compressing a PE pipe to block fluid flow, and damage may occur due to the nature of construction in which the pipe is deformed by physical force. In order to prevent damage to PE pipes due to squeeze-off, the main points to be reflected in the squeeze-off operation procedures such as proper compression range, use pressure, and diameter were derived through damage assessment and confidential test according to the compression rate. The compression experiment for PE pipe damage assessment was conducted while changing the compression rate (20%~40%), the pressure of use (2.8 kPa, 25 kPa, 70 kPa), and the pipe diameters (63 mm, 90 mm, 110 mm). As a result of damage assessment according to the compression rate, damage occurred in pipes with compression rates of 45%(110mm) and 73%(63mm), which are for analyzing the effect of excessive compression. In addition, the leakage test was conducted using Ar(argon) during the squeeze-off, and as a result of the experiment, leakage occurred under the conditions of 70kPa and 110mm of pipe. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that squeeze-off for airtightness should be carried out in pipes within a range not exceeding 25 kPa and 90 mm pipes, and the appropriate compression rate to prevent damage to PE pipes is 30%.

Results from study on physiological responses to $SO_2$ of Quercus spp. selected for restoration of vegetation damaged by air pollution in the field study were as follows. Tolerance of Quercus aliena, Q. acutissima and Q. mongolica used in this study to $SO_2$ was higher in that order and tolerance of these plants to $SO_2$ was high comparatively among trees composing of major forest vegetation of Korea including natural forests and plantations. Stomatal resistance of these plants was increased after exposure to $SO_2$ and range of increase was different among species. From discrepancy between order of tolerance to $SO_2$ and range of increase in stomatal resistance, we were estimated that resistance mechanisms of Quercus spp. were different among species as mechanism originated in avoidance and resistance, respectively. Water potential of plant leaves reduced after exposure to $SO_2$, degree of reduction accorded with order of tolerance to $SO_2$. Reduction of water potential of plants after exposure to $SO_2$ was initiated before appearance of visible damage in plant leaves and water potential of plants exposed to $SO_2$ of low concentration, in which plants were not showed viaible damage was also reduced.
Metcalfa pruinosa was considered to be a very harmful invasive species, due to its high species density in nature and wide range of its host plants. M. pruinosa was distributed in 28 sites among 143 sites. M. pruinosa has wide range and diverse host plants of 52 families 110 species including crop, fruits and forest trees. At present, the identified host plant of M. pruinosa are composed of 62 families and 145 species in total since their first appearance was reported. M. pruinosa was found in roadside 46.7%, followed by forests 33.3% and orchard 20%. Nymphs and adults cause damage to crop and orchard by sucking juice, outbreak of fungi through secretion of wax, and reduction of plant assimilation due to the nectar of nymphs. Also, it reduces the merchantable quality of fruits and thus causes economic damage. It is judged that M. pruinosa has been moved along major road via the traffic vehicles.
A study was performed to understand self-excited pressure fluctuations in the lean premixed flames and to evaluate the effect of Helmholtz resonator on the pressure fluctuations. As low-frequency pressure fluctuations have been reported to cause fatal damage to the combustor and the entire system, Helmholtz-type resonators, which reduce the damage by low-frequency pressure fluctuation in the combustor, are attached to the channel of unburned mixture flow. It is found that the range of low-frequency pressure fluctuations of flame mode 2 is narrowed by the attachment of Helmholtz resonators. From this result, if Helmholtz-type resonators are applied to actual gas turbine combustor, it is confirmed that Helmholtz resonators attached on the fuel discharge hole are also effective for narrowing the range of flame mode 2

In liquid hydrogen storage tanks, tank damage or leakage in the surrounding pipes possess a major risk. Since these tanks store huge amounts of the fluid among all the liquid hydrogen process facilities, there is a high risk of leakage-related accidents. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a risk assessment of liquid hydrogen leakage for a grid-type liquid hydrogen storage tank (lattice-type pressure vessel (LPV): 18 m3) that overcame the low space efficiency of the existing pressure vessel shape. Through a commercially developed three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics program, the geometry of the site, where the liquid hydrogen storage tank will be installed, was obtained and simulations of the leakage scenarios for each situation were performed. From the computational flow analysis results, the pool formation behavior in the event of liquid hydrogen leakage was identified, and the resulting damage range was predicted.

Consequence analysis using an ALOHA program is conducted to calculate the accidental impact ranges in the cases of hydrogen leakage, explosion, and jet fire in a hydrogen fueled combined cycle power plant. To evaluate the effect of weather conditions and topographic features on the damage range, ALOHA is executed for the power plants located in the inland and coastal regions. The damage range of hydrogen leaked in coastal areas is wider than that of inland areas in all risk factors. The obtained results are expected to be used when designing safety system and establishing safety plans.
In this paper, the previous damage models for structures and their components under seismic repeated loading were reviewed systematically. A failure criterion for steel members under severe cyclic excitations as in strong earthquakes was described. A new approach to seismic damage assessment for steel members was proposed. This method was based on a series of the experimental and numerical investigations for steel members under very low cyclic loading. In this study, very low cyclic loading means repetitive loading, 5 to 20 loading cycles, within the large plastic range. The proposed damage assessment method was focused on the local strain history at the cross-section of the most severe concentration of deformation.

In this paper the feasibility of Nondestructive Damage Detection (NDD) in large structures is demonstrated via simulating vibration monitoring of such structures. The theory of NDD for truss type structures is formulated. To examine the feasibility of the theory, a finite element model of a 3-D truss structure, which consists of sixteen bays and includes 246 elements, is developed to simulate damage. Four damage cases are simulated numerically and the cases range from the structure being damaged in one location to the structure being damaged in three locations. For the given modal parameters, this study reveals very good results for small amounts of damage as well as large damage.
This study was intended to analyze how well people with right hemisphere damage can understand Korean proverbs. This study used a between-subject design and within-subjects design where all subjects participate in the three experiments for 10 hospitalized patients of whose average age is 66.1 years old and 10 normal adults in the same age range. Experiment 1 was to make up Korean proverb related stories and suggest it in written, Experiment II was to suggest a picture presenting a Korean proverb and the proverb itself directly, and Experiment III was to make up a story related to a Korean proverb and tell it auditory. Five Korea proverbs were used for each experiment; 15 in total. The results were as follows: First, there was a significant difference in understanding of Korean proverbs between normal adults and people with right hemisphere damage. Second, there was no significant difference of understanding between them by stimulating methods to suggest Korean proverbs. Third, people with right hemisphere damage had a tendency to interpret Korean proverbs literally as a total wrong reaction was composed of 55.36%. Considering the above the results, it can be said that people with right hemisphere damage have less understanding of Korean proverbs than normal adults, which is not affected by a way of or a condition of suggesting Korean proverbs in people with RHD, and they are inclined to make literal interpretation of Korean proverbs as they are.
