Significance of seabed interaction on fatigue assessment of steel catenary risers in the touchdown zone

  • The challenges involved with fatigue damage assessment of steel catenary riser (SCR) in the touchdown zone (TDZ) are primarily due to the non-linear behaviour of the SCR-seabed interaction, considerable uncertainty in SCR-seabed interaction modelling and geotechnical parameters. The issue of fatigue damage induced by the cyclic movements of the SCR with the seabed has acquired prominence with the touch down point (TDP) interaction in the TDZ. Therefore, the SCR-seabed response is critical for reliable estimation of fatigue life in the TDZ. Various design approaches pertaining to the lateral pipe-soil resistance model are discussed. These techniques have been applied in the finite element model that can be used to analyse the lateral SCR-seabed interaction under hydrodynamic loading. This study investigates the sensitivity of fatigue performance to geotechnical parameters through a parametric study. In this study, global analyses are performed to assess the influence of vertical linear seabed springs, the lateral seabed model and the non-linear seabed model, including trench evolution into seabed, seabed normalised stiffness, re-penetration offset parameter and soil suction resistance ratio, on the fatigue life of SCRs in the TDZ.

Earthquake Damage Assessment of Lifelines and Utilities (라이프라인과 공공설비의 지진피해 평가)

  • This paper focuses on the earthquake hazard delineation and physical loss estimation for lifelines and utilities. Emphasis is given to geographic information systems(GIS) and their application to pipeline networks in evaluating the spatial characteristics of earthquake effects. The paper examines the GIS databases for water supply performance obtained for the 1994 northridge. Relationships among buried lifeline damage and various seismic parameters are examined, and the parameters that are statistically most significant are identified. Using GIS data from the Northridge earthquake, the relationships among pipeline repair rate, type of pipe, diameter, and various seismic parameters are assessed.

  • For the purpose of monitoring by ultrasonic test of the ball bearing conditions in rotating machinery, a system for their diagnosis was developed. ultrasonic technique is used to detect abnormal conditions in the bearing system. And various data such as frequency spectrum, energy and amplitude of ultrasonic signals, and ultrasonic parameters were acquired during experiments with the simulated ball bearing system. Based on the above results and practical application for power plant, algorithms and judgement criteria for diagnosis system was established.

  • A pressure-based BOIK model considering Shock to Detonation Transition(SDT) and damage due to external fragment or bullet stimuli impact on energetic materials and analytical approach for determination of free parameters are proposed. The rate of product mass fraction(${\lambda}$) consists of ignition term that represents the initiation due to shock compression and growth term that describes propagation of detonation wave and strain term representing the morphological deformation induced by external impact.

  • In this paper, the stability of SA(Spectral Acceleration) fragility curves is studied for the two sets of elastic modulus of concrete. In doing that, general purpose structural analysis program and generally used probability density function are used. The results of structural analysis are represented by Bernoulli distribution which says damage or no damage. By the use of Maximum Likelihood Method, two parameters of lognormal distribution - median and standard deviation - are found. With them, the fragility curves are constructed.

  • During the storage and transport of fruits in the bulk state, significant damage by dead load may occur. To reduce such damage, the prediction model of allowable pile depth, duration and optimum thickness of packaging cushion for fruits was developed in this study. From the preliminary experiment and some assumptions, the derived equations were verified to be a good prediction of the above three parameters.

  • Caloric restriction (CR) has been associated with health benefits and these effects have been attributed, in part, to modulation of oxidative status by CR; however, data are still controversial. Here, we investigate the effects of seventeen weeks of chronic CR on parameters of oxidative damage/modification of proteins and on antioxidant enzyme activities in cardiac and kidney tissues. Our results demonstrate that CR induced an increase in protein carbonylation in the heart without changing the content of sulfhydryl groups or the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase (CAT). Moreover, CR caused an increase in CAT activity in kidney, without changing other parameters. Protein carbonylation has been associated with oxidative damage and functional impairment; however, we cannot exclude the possibility that, under our conditions, this alteration indicates a different functional meaning in the heart tissue. In addition, we reinforce the idea that CR can increase CAT activity in the kidney. Moreover, CR caused an increase in CAT activity in kidney, without changing other parameters.   • In this paper, the effect of J-R curve changes on the determination of parameters in a failure model owing to the presence or absence of a side groove in a C(T) specimen is investigated. A stress-modified fracture strain model is implemented for FE damage simulations. C(T) specimens were taken from SA508 grade 1a low-alloy steel piping material, and some of them were processed with a side groove. Fracture toughness tests were performed at room temperature and at $316^{\circ}C$. The parameters of the failure model were determined by damage simulations using the J-R curves obtained from the tests. Finally, the results show that the determination of failure model parameters is not affected by variations in J-R curves owing to the presence or absence of a side groove.

Development of A Methodology for In-Reactor Fuel Rod Supporting Condition Prediction (노내 연료봉 지지조건 예측 방법론 개발)

  • The in-reactor fuel rod support conditions against the fretting wear-induced damage can be evaluated by residual spacer grid spring deflection or rod-to-grid gap. In order to evaluate the impact of fuel design parameters on the fretting wear-induced damage, a simulation methodology of the in-reactor fuel rod supporting conditions as a function of burnup has been developed and implemented in the GRIDFORCE program. The simulation methodology takes into account cladding creep rate, initial spring deflection, initial spring force, and spring force relaxation rate as the key fuel design parameters affecting the in-reactor fuel rod supporting conditions. Based on the parametric studies on these key parameters, it is found that the initial spring deflection, the spring force relaxation rate and cladding creepdown rate are in the order of the impact on the in-reactor fuel rod supporting conditions. Application of this simulation methodology to the fretting wear-induced failure experienced in a commercial plant indicates that this methodology can be utilized as an effective tool in evaluating the capability of newly developed cladding materials and/or new spacer grid designs against the fretting wear-induced damage.

  • This paper presents a system identification (SI) scheme in time domain using measured acceleration data. The error function is defined as the time integral of the least squared errors between the measured acceleration and the calculated acceleration by a mathematical model. Damping parameters as well as stiffness properties of a structure are considered as system parameters. The structural damping is modeled by the Rayleigh damping. A new regularization function defined by the L1-norm of the first derivative of system parameters with respect to time is proposed to alleviate the ill-posed characteristics of inverse problems and to accommodate discontinuities of system parameters in time. The time window concept is proposed to trace variation of system parameters in time. Numerical simulation study is performed through a two-span continuous truss subject to ground motion.
