In this paper, a Cloud Model based Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm (CMFOA) is presented for structural damage identification, which is a global optimization algorithm inspired by the foraging behavior of fruit fly swarm. It is assumed that damage only leads to the decrease in elementary stiffness. The differences on time-domain structural acceleration data are used to construct the objective function, which transforms the damaged identification problem of a structure into an optimization problem. The effectiveness, efficiency and accuracy of the CMFOA are demonstrated by two different numerical simulation structures, including a simply supported beam and a cantilevered plate. Numerical results show that the CMFOA has a better capacity for structural damage identification than the basic Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm (FOA) and the CMFOA is not sensitive to measurement noise.
In this paper a 3-D continuum damage mechanics formulation for composite laminates and its implementation into a finite element model that is based on the layer-wise laminate plate theory are described. In the damage formulation, each composite ply is treated as a homogeneous orthotropic material exhibiting orthotropic damage in the form of distributed microscopic cracks that are normal to the three principal material directions. The progressive damage of different angle ply composite laminates under quasi-static loading that exhibit the free edge effects are investigated. The effects of various numerical modeling parameters on the progressive damage response are investigated. It will be shown that the dominant damage mechanism in the lay-ups of [+30/-30]s and [+45/-45]s is matrix cracking. However, the lay-up of [+15/-15] may be delaminated in the vicinity of the edges and at $+{\theta}/-{\theta}$ layers interfaces.
The Cuckoo search (CS) algorithm is a simple and efficient global optimization algorithm and it has been applied to figure out large range of real-world optimization problem. In this paper, a new formula is introduced to the discovering probability process to improve the convergence rate and the Tournament Selection Strategy is adopted to enhance global search ability of the certain algorithm. Then an approach for structural damage identification based on modified Cuckoo search (MCS) is presented. Meanwhile, we take frequency residual error and the modal assurance criterion (MAC) as indexes of damage detection in view of the crack damage, and the MCS algorithm is utilized to identifying the structural damage. A simply supported beam and a 31-bar truss are studied as numerical example to illustrate the correctness and efficiency of the propose method. Besides, a laboratory work is also conducted to further verification. Studies show that, the proposed method can judge the damage location and degree of structures more accurately than its counterpart even under measurement noise, which demonstrates the MCS algorithm has a higher damage diagnosis precision.
In the present work, the two-back stress model is proposed and continuum damage mechanics (CDM) is incorporated into the plastic constitutive relation in order to describe the plastic deformation localization and the damage evolution in a deforming continuum body. Coupling between damage mechanics and isothermal rate independent plasticity is performed using the kinematic hardening rule, which in turn is formulated by combining the nonlinear Armstrong-Frederick rule and the Phillips rule. The numerical analyses are carried out within h deformation theory. It is noted that the damage evolution within a work piece accelerates the plastic deformation localization such that the material with lower hardening exponent results in a rapid shear band formation. Moreover, the results from the numerical analysis reflected closely with the micro-structures around the fractured regime. The effects of the various hardening parameters on deformation localization are also investigated. As the nonlinear strain rate description in the back stress evolution becomes dominant, the strain localization becomes intensified as well as the damage evolution.
Fatigue life evaluation of welded structures in a range of high cycles is one of the most difficult problems since extremely small plastic deformation and damage occur during the loading cycles. Moreover, it is very difficult to identify the strong non-linearities of welding, inducing residual stress. In this paper, numerical fatigue test method for welded structures was developed using continuum damage mechanics with inherent strain. Recently, continuum damage mechanics, which can simulate both crack initiation at the micro-scale level and crack propagation at the meso-scale level, has been adopted in the fracture related problem. In order to consider the residual stresses in the welded strictures, damage calculation in conjunction with welding, inducing inherent strain, was proposed. The numerical results obtained from the damage calculation were compared to experimental results.

Elevated water tanks are inverted pendulum type structures where drift limit is an important criterion for seismic design and performance evaluation. Explicit drift criteria for elevated water tanks are not available in the literature. In this study, probabilistic approach is used to determine maximum drift limit for damage state of yielding and damage state of collapse for the elevated water tanks supported on RC frame staging. The two damage states are defined using results of incremental dynamic analysis wherein a total of 2160 nonlinear time history analyses are performed using twelve artificial spectrum compatible ground motions. Analytical fragility curves are developed using two-parameter lognormal distribution. The maximum allowable drifts corresponding to yield and collapse level requirements are estimated for different tank capacities. Finally, a single fragility curve is developed which provides maximum drift values for the different probability of damage. Further, for rational consideration of the uncertainties in design, three confidence levels are selected and corresponding drift limits for damage states of yielding and collapse are proposed. These values of maximum drift can be used in performance-based seismic design for a particular damage state depending on the level of confidence.
This study develops a two stage procedure to identify the structural damage based on the optimized artificial neural networks. Initially, the modal strain energy index (MSEI) is established to extract the damaged elements and to reduce the computational time. Then the genetic algorithm (GA) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) are combined to detect the damage severity. The input of the network is modal strain energy index and the output is the flexural stiffness of the beam elements. The principal component analysis (PCA) is utilized to reduce the input variants of the neural network. By using the genetic algorithm to optimize the parameters, the ANNs can significantly improve the accuracy and convergence of the damage identification. The influence of noise on damage identification results is also studied. The simulation and experiment on beam structures shows that the adaptive parameter selection neural network can identify the damage location and severity of beam structures with high accuracy.
The result of damage detection from on-site measurements is commonly polluted by unavoidable measurement noises. It is widely recognized that this side influence could be reduced to some extent if the sensor placement was properly designed. Although many methods have been proposed to find the optimal number and location of mono-type sensors, the optimal layout of multi-type sensors need further investigation, because a network of heterogeneous sensors is commonly used in engineering. In this paper, a new criterion of the optimal placement for different types of sensors is proposed. A corresponding heuristic is developed to search for good results. In addition, Monte Carlo simulation is suggested to design a robust damage detection system which contains certain redundancies. The validity of these methods is illustrated by two bridge examples.
This study presents the Big Bang and Big Crunch (BB-BC) optimization algorithm for detection of structure damage in large severity. Local damage is represented by a perturbation in the elemental stiffness parameter of the structural finite element model. A nonlinear objective function is established by minimizing the discrepancies between the measured and calculated acceleration responses (AR) of the structure. The BB-BC algorithm is utilized to solve the objective function, which can localize the damage position and obtain the severity of the damage efficiently. Numerical simulations have been conducted to identify both single and multiple structural damages for beam, plate and European Space Agency Structures. The present approach gives accurate identification results with artificial measurement noise.

The present study intends to analyze damage in thin-walled steel cylinders undergoing constant internal pressure and thermal cycles through use of anisotropic continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model coupled with nonlinear kinematic hardening rule of Chaboche. Materials damage in each direction was defined based on plastic strain and its direction. Stress and strain distribution over wall-thickness was described based on the CDM model and the return mapping algorithm was employed based on the consistency condition. Plastic zone expansion across the wall thickness of cylinders was noticeably affected with change in internal pressure and temperature gradients. Expansion of plastic zone over wall-thickness at inner and outer surfaces and their boundaries demarking elastic and plastic regions was attributed to the magnitude of damage induced over thermomechanical cycles on the thin-walled samples tested at various pressure stresses.
