  • In this paper a heuristic method for identifying individual pipes in water pipe networks to determine specific sections of the pipes that need to be replaced due to deterioration. An appropriate minimum pipe length is determined by selecting the pipe length that has the greatest variance of the average cumulative break number slopes among the various pipe lengths used. As a result, the minimum pipe length for the case study water network is determined as 4 m and a total of 39 individual pipe IDs are obtained. The economically optimal replacement times of the individual pipe IDs are estimated by using the threshold break rate of an individual pipe ID and the pipe break trends models for which the General Pipe Break Prediction Model(Park and Loganathan, 2002) that can incorporate the linear, exponential, and in-between of the linear and exponetial failure trends and the ROCOFs based on the modified time scale(Park et al., 2007) are used. The maximum log-likelihoods of the log-linear ROCOF and Weibull ROCOF estimated for the break data of a pipe are compared and the ROCOF that has a greater likelihood is selected for the pipe of interest. The effects of the social costs of a pipe break on the optimal replacement time are also discussed.

  • In this study, a numerical model describing the shallow-water equations is newly developed by using a TVD scheme. The model has a second-order accuracy in time and space and is free from nonphysical oscillations, even in the vicinity of large gradients. Because a upwind based TVD scheme requires a Riemann solver, the HLLC scheme is employed in this model. To calibrate the applicability and accuracy, the developed model is used to simulate dam-break waves in an ideal channel and a sloshing flow n a paraboloidal basin. Agreements between numerical predictions and analytical solutions are very resonable.

  • The dynamic behavior of numerous grains interacting with each other can be easily observed. In this study, this dynamic behavior was analyzed based on the contact between numerous grains. The discrete element method was used for analyzing the dynamic behavior of each particle and the neighboring-cell algorithm was employed for detecting their contact. The Hertzian and tangential sliding friction contact models were used for calculating the contact force acting between the particles. A GPU-based parallel program was developed for conducting the computer simulation and calculating the numerous contacts. The dam break experiment was performed to verify the simulation results. The reliability of the program was verified by comparing the results of the simulation with those of the experiment.

  • The DAMBRK is applied to Janghyeon and Dongmak reservoirs in Namdaecheon basin, where two reservoirs were failed due to Typhoon Rusa in 2002. Relaxation scheme is added to DAMBRK to consider the tributary cross-section because two reservoirs are in tributary valleys. In addition, this study suggests the method to utilize the reservoir breach formation time of ASDSO (2005) and empirical formulas for peak break outflow from dam to reduce the uncertainty of reservoir breach formulation time. The single break of Janghyeon reservoir and consecutive break of Janghyeon and Dongmak reservoirs with the suggested method are considered. While the breach discharge from reservoirs rushes down, the discharge and water surface elevation along the river are predicted, and the predictions show the attenuation phenomena of reservoir break floodwave. The applicability of the model is validated by comparing the predicted height with field surveyed data, and showing good agreements between predictions and measurements.

  • Present study investigated the influence of time step size, turbulent eddy viscosity, and the number of layer on rapid and unsteady propagation of dam break flow. When the time step size had a value such that it resulted in Cr of 0.89, a significant numerical oscillation was observed in the vicinity of the wave front. Higher turbulent viscosity ensured smooth and mild slope of velocity and water stage compared with the flow behavior by no viscosity. The vertical velocity at the lower layer positioned near the bottom showed lower velocity compared with other layers.

  • This study suggests a new hydrostatic pressure distribution corrected for nonuniform flow over a channel of large slope. For analyzing shallow-water flows over large slope accurately, it is developed a finite-volume model incorporating the pressure distribution to the shallow water equations. Traveling speed of the hydraulic jump downstream a parabolic bump in the drain case is quite reduced by the weakened bottom gradient source term in the model with the pressure correction. In simulating the dam-break flow over a triangular sill, it is identified that the model with pressure correction could capture the water surface by the digital imaging measurements more than the model without that. Due to the pressure correction decreasing the reflected flows on and increasing overflows over the sill, there are good agreements in the experiment and the simulation with that. Therefore, this model is expected to be applied to such practical problems as flows in the spillway of dam or run-up on the beach.

  • Petrov-Galerkin finite element model for analyzing dynamic wave equation is applied to gradually and rapidly varied unsteady flow. The model in verified by applying to hydraulic jump, nonlinear disturbance propagation in frictionless horizontal channel and dam-break analysis. It shows stable and accurate results compared with analytical solutions for various cases. The model in applied to a surge propagation in a frictionless horizontal channel. Three-dimensional water surface profiles show that the computed result converges to the analytical one with sharp discontinuity. The model is also applied to the Taehaw River to analyze unsteady floodwave propagation. The computed results have good agreements with those of DWOPER model in terms of discharge and stage hydrographs.

  • The serious problem facing two-dimensional finite element hydraulic model is the treatment of wet and dry areas. This situation is encountered in most practical river and coastal engineering problems, such as flood propagation, dam break analysis and so on. Especially, dry areas result in mathematical complications and require special treatment. The objective of this study is to investigate the wet and dry parameters that have direct relevance to model performance in situations where inundation of initially dry areas occurs. Several numerical simulations were carried out, which examined the performance of the marsh porosity method of RMA-2 model to investigate for application of parameters. Experimental channel with partly dry side slopes, straight channel with irregular geometry and Han river were performed for tests. As a result of this study, effectively applied marsh porosity method provide a reliable results for flow distribution of wet and dry area, it could be further developed to basis for extending to water quality and sediment transport analysis.

  • Several reservoirs that were managed by local governments and the Korea Rural Community Corporation have recently collapsed. One of them is the Goeyeon reservoir in Yeongcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do that collapsed mainly around the spillway due to heavy rain at 9 O'clock, on 21 August 2014. The Goeyeon reservoir was an aging agricultural reservoir over 70 years since it was built. In this study, the collapse situation of the reservoir was reproduced through the DAMBRK model. Flood inundation maps were reconstructed for the breach outflow of the dam analyzed by the DAMBRK model. We estimated the breach duration and outflow of the reservoir as compared with the inundation image taken by the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) at the time when the Goeyeon reservoir collapsed. The results of this study are expected to be useful for predicting damage in the downstream inundation area when a reservoir collapses.
