  • A new cultivar 'Daewang' strawberry was developed by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science for forcing culture in 2010. The cultivar 'Daewang' was originated from the cross between 'Maehyang', a high firmness cultivar and 'Wongyo 3111', a high sugar content in 2006. The cultivar shows erect plant type, vigorous growth habit, early flower bud differentiation with 12-15 flowers per cluster from planting on healthy nursery. Fruits of 'Daewang' are conical type having a bright red skin color, and 16-17 g in an average weight. 'Daewang' is suitable for forcing culture as time required for dormancy breaking ranged between 50 and 100 hours. This cultivar has excellent taste for high sugar/acid ratio as sugar content of $11.1^{\circ}Brix$, acidity of 0.39% with abundant texture and can be harvested by late spring because the fruit firmness of 'Daewang' was $18.2g{\cdot}mm^{-2}$ that was about $7.9g{\cdot}mm^{-2}$ higher than $10.3g{\cdot}mm^{-2}$ of 'Akihime' cultivar. But although total yield is not significantly different from 'Akihime' cultivar, its marketable yield is remarkably higher than that of 'Akihime' cultivar. Disease and pest resistance of 'Daewang' have a tendency to sensitive powdery mildew, anthracnose and spotted spider.

  • A new soybean cultivar 'Daewang' was released by Agricultural Research & Extension Services, Gangwon Province in 2008. The Goals of breeding the variety was for large seed size, high yield, lodging tolerance and resistance to diseases such as soybean mosaic virus (SMV) and bacterial pustule. 'Daewang' was derived from the cross of GWS91, which has yellow seed coat, large seed size and late maturity, and 'Seokryang-putkong', which has large seed size and early maturity. The preliminary, advanced and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection were carried out from 2002 to 2007. It has a determinate growth habit with purple flower, yellow seed coat, yellow hilum and large seed weight (33.6 g per 100 seeds). The maturity date of 'Daewang' is 16 days later than the 'Taekwang'. It has a high content of total isoflavone ($1,851{\mu}g/g$). The average yield of 'Daewang' was 2.68 MT/ha in the regional yield trials (RYT) carried out in four locations in Gangwon province from 2004 to 2007 which was 4 percent higher than the check cultivar 'Taekwang'.

  • In this study, four cultivars of strawberry commonly grown in South Korea, 'Daewang', 'Seolhyang', 'Maehyang', and 'Ssanta', were evaluated for several qualities, including the presence of phytochemicals, sugar content, organic acids, and fruit hardness. The plants were cultivated on a high-bench bed system in a plastic greenhouse and drip irrigated. Fruit samples were collected three times in February 2013 to analyze the fruit characteristics. We found that the fruit hardness of the 'Daewang', 'Maehyang', and 'Ssanta' cultivars was greater than that of 'Seolhyang', however 'Seolhyang' showed the highest moisture content of all the cultivars, indicating that fruit hardness was negatively associated with moisture content. Furthermore, 'Seolhyang' was found to have the highest levels of phenolic compounds and anthocyanins compared to the other cultivars. 'Maehyang' had the highest amount of total sugars. 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang' accumulated higher amounts of total organic acids. As a result, 'Daewang' and 'Maehyang' were expected to be preferred by consumers because they had the highest ratio of sugar to total acid in their fruit.

  • The objective of this study was to find out the optimum number of fruiting per a flower cluster on 5 domestic strawberry cultivars (Fragaria${\times}$ananassa Duch.), 'Daewang', 'Ssanta', 'Okmae', 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang'. Therefore, three ways of fruit thinning, 4~5 fruiting, 7~9 fruiting and all fruiting per a flower cluster were compared. After fruit thinning, the first fruit weights were increased from the second flower cluster on 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang', but from the third one on 'Daewang' and 'Ssanta'. There was no difference in first fruit weight by the flower thinning ways on 'Okmae'. The mean fruit weights of all the cultivars were increased and sugar contents also were increased, but acidities were decreased. The peduncle lengths were shortened by fruit thinning, but there was no difference in number of leaf, petiole length and crown diameter. Marketable yields by 4~5 fruiting per a flower cluster than all the fruit setting were higher 4.3% and 6.6% respectively on 'Daewang' and 'Maehyang'. In contrast, the yields were higher 3.1%, 3.5% and 9.1% in 7~9 fruiting per a flower cluster than all fruiting on 'Ssanta', 'Okmae' and 'Seolhyang' respectively. As the result, we could improve the fruit quality and could increase marketable yield by fruit thinning with matching flowering characteristics of those strawberry cultivars.

  • Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of low temperature-darkness treatment on floral initiation in four kinds of Korean strawberry cultivars. Mother plants were planted on March 29 and daughter plants were raised for the experiment. Temperature treatment was done for 7, 14, and 21 days keeping $13^{\circ}C$ in cooling storage from August 29, September 5 and September 14 to September 21. After the treatment, flower bud initiation was examined by a microscope, and the seedlings were transplanted on hydroponic system with Yamazaki's strawberry solution of EC $0.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ to check the flowering. 'Ssanta' and 'Maehyang' showed early flower bud initiation in 7 days treatment than 'Seolhyang' by microscope check. 'Ssanta', 'Daewang', and 'Maehyang' showed early flower bud initiation in 14 days treatment than 'Seolhyang'. There were no differences among the treatments in 21 days treatment. Percentage of flowering of 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang' by low temperature-darkness treatment didn't show any difference but 'Daewang' and 'Ssanta' showed high percentage of flowering. It suggested that low temperature-darkness treatment technique can be use for improving early flowering and yield of 'Ssanta' and 'Daewang' cultivars.

  • The aim of this work was to study the changes in fruit quality and antioxidant activity depending on ripening levels, storage temperature and storage periods in two strawberry cultivars (Fragaria ${\times}$ ananassa cvs. Daewang and Seolhyang). Fully ripe strawberry fruits (100% colored fruits) and unripe strawberry fruits (50% colored fruits) were harvested and then stored at $4^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, respectively. Hardness, phytochemicals, sugars, organic acids and antioxidant activity of strawberry fruits were measured after storage for 5 and 10 days, respectively. When fruit hardness was compared between the two cultivars, 'Daewang' showed a greater degree of fruit hardness than 'Seolhyang'. 'Daewang' also showed higher amounts of phenolic compounds and sucrose than 'Seolhyang'. In contrary to this, 'Daewang' was shown to contain lower amounts of anthocyanin and fructose than 'Seolhyang'. However, antioxidant activities of both cultivars were almost identical. When the effects of storage temperature were examined on fruit hardness, fruits stored at $4^{\circ}C$ showed a higher degree of hardness than those stored at $15^{\circ}C$. During the period of fruit storage at $4^{\circ}C$ or $15^{\circ}C$, both cultivars showed marked decline in the contents of phenolic compounds as well as sucrose. Contrastingly, they showed higher amounts of anthocyanin and glucose after 10 days of storage. On the other hand, the contents of organic acids in strawberry fruits were influenced only by the period of storage, not depending on cultivars or temperatures. Antioxidant activities of fully ripe fruits declined remarkably after 10 days of storage, as compared to unripe fruits which showed a minor decrease or increase. When fully ripe fruits of both cultivars were stored at different temperatures, those stored at $15^{\circ}C$ showed a significant decrease in the antioxidant activity as compared to those stored at $4^{\circ}C$. However, changes of antioxidant activity in unripe fruits were minor. These observations in order to supply high quality strawberry suggest that fully ripe strawberry fruits should be harvested for the short-term storage and the appropriate ripe level fruit should be harvested for the long-term storage. Storage temperature is appropriate at $4^{\circ}C$.

  • Raising seedlings is important for fruit crops and is especially significant for strawberries as it accounts for 80% of their cultivation. However, there are few studies on raising seedlings of strawberries by hydroponics. Since strawberries show clear differences in growth characteristics based on cultivar, it is necessary to develop suitable fertilizer formula, concentration and pH for each cultivar, and also to examine the amount of nutrient feeding appropriate for each medium type. A key to raising seedlings of strawberries by hydroponics is the development of strategies to manage the concentration of nutrient solution. The mother plants of 'Daewang' strawberries were planted on hydroponics benches filled with cocopeat on March 28, 2012. Three nutrient solution treatments were employed during the term of raising seedlings: a type that supplied EC $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ nutrient solution for 30 days and only water for 20 days [0.6 (30) + 20]; a type that supplied EC $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ nutrient solution for 30 days and only water for 20 days [1.2 (30) + 20]; and a type that supplied EC $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ nutrient solution for 50 days [1.2 (50)]. The plants were then planted on hydroponics benches filled with cocopeat on September 20, and managed with EC $0.6-0.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ strawberry nutrient solution developed by Yamazaki. After planting, shoot growth, flowering rate and fruit quality of the first cluster were investigated. The petiole length, leaf length, leaf width and crown diameter showed the highest grown in the [1.2 (50)] treatment, followed by [1.2 (30) + 20], and then [0.6 (30) + 20], indicating that the higher concentration of nutrient solution was preferable for raising seedlings. However, the growth differences among treatments gradually disappeared as growth continued, and the crown diameter especially grew to exhibit almost no difference at all among treatments. The point of flowering came first in [0.6 (30) + 20], followed by [1.2 (30) + 20] and then [1.2 (50)]. The [0.6 (30) + 20] treatment showed much earlier flowering than other treatments, which implies that low-concentration nutrient solution may be beneficial to the flowering of 'Daewang' strawberries while raising seedlings. There was no statistically significant difference among treatments in fruit length, fruit diameter and fruit firmness. Fruit weight in [1.2 (50)] treatment was significantly higher than other treatments. However, soluble solids of fruit was the lowest in [1.2 (50)] treatment. Together, the results of this experiment imply that it is better to supply EC $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ solution for 30 days and then supply only water for 20 days to adequately manage concentration of nutrient solutions during the period of raising seedlings of strawberries by hydroponics.

  • This study was conducted to examine the morphological characteristics of those Azalea Cultivars(hereinafter, Azalea Cultivars) that are mainly used for landscaping in Korea in order to prepare classification criteria. As testing materials, major Azalea Cultivars cultivated in large quantities by its producing companies were collected. Thereafter, the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the traits of Azalea Cultivars were investigated in the way of characteristic investigation for new cultivars of azalea used by the Korea Seed and Variety Service in order to classify them and prepare the classification criteria. Since cultivar names have not been established for Azalea Cultivars for landscaping thus far, the data were compiled using the names used by cultivating companies. According to the results, Azalea Cultivars cultivated in Suncheon, Jeonnam mainly for landscaping were 10 in number; Beni, Daewang, Three, Zasanhong, Hancheol, Sancheoljuk, Gyeobsancheoljuk, Baekcheoljuk, Akado, and Seok-am. Among them, the cultivars Beni, Daewang, and Three could not be easily distinguished from each other because they are commonly called Yeongsanhong by cultivating companies and the shapes of their leaves and flowers are similar to each other. In particular, the flower color of Beni was 'bright red', that of Daewang was 'vivid purple', and that of Three was 'bright purple'. In addition, Zasanhong and Hancheol were similar to each other in shape the degree of expression of spots on the flowers and the gloss on the front side of the leaves of Hancheol were higher and stronger compared to that of Zasanhong. Sancheoljuk flowered in early April, earlier compared to other Azalea Cultivars. Gyeobsancheoljuk is an elementary species of Sancheoljuk and it had double flowers although all other traits were similar to those of Sancheoljuk. Although Baekcheoljuk was easily distinguished because it had white flowers, its leaves were similar to those of Akado the reason why these two cultivars could not be easily distinguished from each other. The cultivar Akado flowered early May later compared to other Azalea Cultivars and its flowers were relatively large in diameter as with Baekcheoljuk and Sancheoljuk. Finally, the cultivar Seok-am was easily distinguished because it had smaller leaves compared to other cultivars and it flowered late as with the cultivar Akado.

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimal MS medium strength to improve sprouting rate of apical meristem of strawberry 'Seolhyang' in vitro. Strawberry apical meristems at size (0.2 mm to 0.3 mm) with leaf primordials were cultured on the MS media with four strength levels, ($1/4{\times}$, $1/3{\times}$, $1/2{\times}$, and $1{\times}$) and the sprouting rate and growth characteristics were evaluated after eight weeks after cultivation. Shoot rate of 'Daewang' apical meristems was 93.6%whereas 'Seolhyang' apical meristems were sprouted with 31.6% on $1{\times}$ MS medium strength. Different sprouting rates were observed in 'Seolhyang' apical meristem with 31.6% in $1{\times}$ medium, 75.0% in $1/2{\times}$ medium, and 94.4% in $1/3{\times}$ medium. The sprouting rate was improved with the decrease of medium strength, but the shoot rate in $1/4{\times}$ medium decreased up to 54.5%. Shoot length was 0.9 cm in $1{\times}$ medium, 1.2 cm in $1/2{\times}$ medium, 1.6 cm in $1/3{\times}$ medium, and 1.9 cm in $1/4{\times}$ medium. Shoot length was longer as medium strength decreased and numbers of leaves and roots were not significant differences among the medium strengths. As a result, sprouting rate was highest and plant growth was best in $1/3{\times}$ MS medium compared to the others.

  • This study was conducted to examine the state of confusion about those azalea cultivars(hereinafter, Azalea Cultivars) that are used among practicians in landscaping businesses(designers, constructors, and producers). Which Azalea Cultivars would be delivered when they were ordered to producers using the names of Azalea Cultivars notified by the Public Procurement Service. In addition, the situations of azalea cultivar planting designs in the planting design drawings of three apartments completed recently and whether the Azalea Cultivars on the design drawings were the same as those Azalea Cultivars that were actually planted were examined. When Azalea Cultivars were ordered using the notified names, three Azalea Cultivars; Beni, Three, and Daewang were delivered for the name Yeongsanhong and two Azalea Cultivars; Zasanhong and Hancheol were delivered for the name Zasanhong. Yeongsanhong was perceived as a common name of Beni, Three, and Daewang by producers. Therefore, this caused confusion between producers and purchasers. In the case of Zasanhong, as the traits of Zasanhong are similar to those of the cultivar Hancheol, the producers or purchasers might have been unable to clearly distinguish between the cultivars and thus two cultivars might have been delivered without being distinguished from each other. The names of Azalea Cultivars used in planting design drawings were the names notified by the notifying agencies or comprehensive and unclear names such as azalea and Yeongsanhong. Completely different Azalea Cultivars from those written in planting design drawings were planted in actual construction sites in many cases. These situations should have occurred because designers did not write accurate cultivar names in planting design drawings and constructors could not accurately perceive the classification characteristics of individual Azalea Cultivars but planted those Azalea Cultivars with similar flowers colors or those that could be easily bought to fit the conditions of construction sites.
