  • Seasonal fluctuation of groundwater level by pumping amount and stream discharge at the riverbank filtrate site adjacent to the Nakdong River in Daesan-Myeon was characterized. Groundwater level fluctuation shows increase in wet season (June, July, August and September) and decrease in dry season (the other months). Seasonal variation of pumping amount shows similar trend to the groundwater fluctuation due to higher consumption of potable water in summer. The relation of specific capacity, Nakdong River and pumping quantity was analyzed. The logarithmic relationship between specific capacity and the stream discharge gives high correlation coefficient, 0.96. This fact indicates that the increase of stream discharge rate reduces the rate of drawdown in the pumping area in wet season.

  • The high Fe and Mn contents in riverbank filtered groundwater often provoke problems on the water quality, We analyzed the mineral and chemical compositions of the soil samples taken from the different depths of the fluvial deposits at various locations in the riverbank filtration area, Daesan-Myeon. The groundwater chemistry data were also collected from the equivalent depths with the soil samples at the boreholes in July and December, 2005. The relationships between the enrichment characteristics of Fe and Mn in the groundwater and the mineralogical and physicochemical properties of the fluvial deposits were carefully analyzed. The results indicate that the Fe and Mn contents in the groundwater vary with seasonally and show different enrichment behaviors.

  • Hydraulic conductivity of unconsolidated media can be determined by aquifer tests, laboratory tests and empirical equations based on grain size analysis. Commonly, the different methods give different hydraulic conductivities. Grain size measurements were done to determine hydraulic conductivity, using 184 soil samples collected from eight boreholes in a riverbank filtration area, Daesan-Myeon, Changwon City, Korea, Pumping tests were conducted at the riverbank filtration area. The average hydraulic conductivity by the empirical relations from grain size measurements comes out around $10^{-2}m/s$, 22 to 55 times higher than by the pumping test analyses. The hydraulic conductivity obtained from the empirical equations is interpreted to have a relationship with steady-state condition while that obtained from the pumping tests is interpreted to have a relationship with unsteady-state condition. Thus, hydraulic conductivity obtained from various methods should be critically analyzed for reasonable management of groundwater development.

  • The standard shift-share analysis decomposes a region's sectoral growth into three components: national, industry-mix, and regional-shift effects. Nevertheless, the three components of the traditional shift-share are not related to the behavior of the regional economies that are neighbors of the region under analysis. We incorporate a spatial structure within this basic formulation, and consider spatial interaction in the decomposition analysis. Daesan Port's export grew steadily at an annualized average rate of 4.0% during 2011-2017, and its rank, in terms of export performance, was 13 in 2010; this rose to 6 in 2016, then declined slightly to 7 in 2017 before reaching 6 as of June, 2018. However, not all ports have a similar growth path. The Onsan Port's share declined from 27.4% in 2011 to 21.0% to 2017, whereas the share of petroleum product exports of Daesan Port increased rapidly, from approximately 8.5% in 2011 to 16.0% in 2017. The standard shift-share analysis shows that petroleum products and basic petrochemicals have a positive regional in dustry-mix effect, but petrochemistry materials and synthetic resins have a negative sign, indicating that the former's exports grow faster than national export, while the increase of the latter's export is slower than national one. The spatial shift-share model indicates that for both petroleum products and basic petrochemicals, Incheon and Ulsan Ports have a positive value for the neighbor-nation regional shift effect and a positive value for the region-neighbor regional shift effect. This paper also shows that Yeosu Port for petroleum products; Ulsan Port for basic petrochemicals; Ulsan, Onsan and Yeosu Ports for petrochemistry materials; and Ulsan, Busan, and Incheon Ports for synthetic resins have a positive value for the neighbor-nation regional shift effect but a negative value for the region-neighbor regional shift effect.

  • Design techniques for minimizing the damage caused by leakage of $H_2S$ gas, contained in natural gas and petroleum, have been widely studied abroad in chemical plants that purify and process natural gas and petroleum. However, there is no domestic engineering practice and regulation of $H_2S$. In accordance with the circumstances, this study proposes the quantitative criteria of process equipment to install $H_2S$ toxic gas detector as 500 ppm and explains the valid basis. The $H_2S$ gas dispersion radius up to IDLH 100 ppm is calculated by ALOHA under previous $H_2S$ gas leak accident scenario. The weather conditions of modeling include the conditions of Ulsan, Yeosu and Daesan, the three major petrochemical complexes in Korea. The long radius up to 100 ppm was derived in order of Ulsan, Daesan, Yeosu. For emergency safety the dispersion radius up to 100 ppm of the $H_2S$ gas obtained in this study should be extended to apply the additional $H_2S$ toxic gas detector, and local climate conditions should be considered.

  • The Chungju and Seosan Groups have been known usually as Precambrian formations in Korea. But their relative and absolute ages have been controvericial problem in relation with other geologic system such as so-called Ogcheon and Yeoncheon Systems in Korea. This study has mainly focused on the corelation of the Chungju Group with the Seosan Group in their stratigraphy, structure, metamorphism, and iron ore deposits. In the process of study, the auther surveyed and reclassified the Chungju and Seosan Groups and corelated with Gyeonggi and Ogch cheon metamorphic belts and got some new data. The Chungju iron-bearing formations showing transtitional relation with the Gyeonggi Gneiss Complex and the Jangamri Formation consisting mainly of pebble bearing calcarious phyllite, should be seperated from the Gyemyeongsan formation which is mainly composed of metavolcanic rocks. The Jangamri Formation and the coaly phyllite, which can be corelated respectively with the Hwaggangri Formation and Changri Formation in Ogcheon Group, are repeated in the Gyemyeonsan and Munjuri Formations with the overturned anticlinal folding(F1). So the Chungju Group which was defined as an indipendant geologic unit from the Ogcheon Group should be limited only on the Chungju iron Formation. The Seosan Group can be classified stratigraphically such as Seosan Formation consisting of iron-bearing quartzite and mica schist, Daesan Formation overlying unconformably on the Seosan Formation and Gyeonggi Gneiss Complex. Taean Formation overlying unconformably on the Daesan Formation should be seperated from Seosan Group. There are many similarity in the stratigrphy, structure, and metamorphic facies between Chungju and Seosan Groups exept the metavolcanic rocks in the Gyemyeongsan and Munjuri Formations and the pebble bearing calcareous phyllite in the Jangamri Formation. The two Groups were deformed with two kinds of differant stages, the first shows $N30^{\circ}-40^{\circ}E$ trend of fold axis, the second $N70^{\circ}-80^{\circ}W$ respectively. The Seosan Formation, which is the lowest formation in Seosan Group and bearing the iron formation, was metamorphosed at 2500 m. y. before. These age is similar with the metamorphic age of Gyeonggi metamorphic belt and with the age of Algoman and Kenoran Orogenies which devide the Precambrian into Archean and Proterozoic Era. So the Seosan Formation, which is included in some migmatitic rocks of Gyeonggi Gneiss Complex, is the oldest formation in Korea and can be corelated with the Anshan Group which bears the oldest iron formation in China. The metamorphic facies of the Precambrian metamorphism in Seosan area is simillar with that of Chungju area, showing high temperature-low pressure amphibolite facies which is corelated with the Gyeonggi metamorphic belt, the oldest metamorphic belt in Korea ($650^{\circ}-680^{\circ}C$, 3.2-4.4 Kb). The high temperature intermediate pressure amphibolite facies in Seosan area with the low temperature-intermediate presure greenschist facies of Taean formation is corelated with that of Ogcheon Group ($590^{\circ}-640^{\circ}$ C, 5.2-6.3 Kb). The Chungju and Seosan iron formations were deposited in Archean, showing geochemical composition of Precambrian iron formations. The Chungju iron formation was mainly formed by the chemical precipitation, on the other hand, the Seosan iron formation was formed by alternated action of chemical and detrital depositions.

  • Objectives: The water fluoridation program has been implemented since 2008 at the Daesan water treatment plant, Changwon City. The aim of this study is to evaluate caries preventive effect of permanent teeth from community water fluoridation program Methods: Evaluation surveys were conducted on 8-, 10- and 12-year olds in the fluoridated and non-fluoridated area of Uichang-gu and Seongsan-gu, Changwon City in 2015. The number of the subjects in 2015 was 722 in fluoridated area and 707 in non-fluoridated area. The caries preventive effect of permanent teeth by community water fluoridation was estimated by the differences in adjusted DMFT and DMFS scores between the program and control groups. Cofounders of mean number of fissure-sealed teeth or surfaces, and number of subjects by gender were adjusted to estimate the caries preventive effect of permanent teeth. Results: The mean DMFT score or DMFS score of children aged 8-, 10- and 12-years adjusted for the number of fissure-sealed teeth or surfaces in fluoridated area were significantly lower than those in non-fluoridated area in 2015. The caries preventive effect of permanent teeth estimated based on the difference of mean DMFT scores adjusted for fissure-sealed teeth, age and number of subjects by gender between control and program group among children was 37.3%. Conclusions: These results suggest that the caries preventive effect of permanent teeth from water fluoridation program at Daesan water treatment plant, Changwon City was so high that the water fluoridation program should be developed in other regions in Korea.

  • The author studied the soil microarthropoda's fauna, vertical distribution, seasonal fluctuation, and the relationship between the number of soil microarthropoda and environmental factor(pH) in survey area. 3949 soil microarthropoda were collected in survey area. They included Arachnida(48.6%), Collembola(23.5%), Hymenoptera(l9.9%), and Isoptera, etc. Fresh length was the longest(1l3.6 mm) in broad-leaf forest on Mt. Chilgap which is non-industrial complex area, and the shortest(46.8 mm) in pine forest at Yochon industrial complex. The population density of soil microarthropoda was the highest in summer and the lowest in winter. The number of soil microarthropoda was higher in Mt. Keryong and Chilgap, non-industrial complex area, than Yochon and Daesan, industrial complex area. The number of soil microarthropoda increased from spring to summer and decreased from autumn to winter. Vertically, soil microarthropoda were more abundant in the second layer subsoil(0∼5 cm) in spring, in the first layer(5∼10 cm) in summer and autumn, and in the third layer(0∼15 cm) in winter. Diversity index was higher in non-industrial area(1.02) than industrial complex area(0.73). Biodiversity index was the highest in the second soil layer, in pine forest on Mt. Keryong(l.60) and the lowest in the third soil layer, in broad leaf-forest, at Daesan industrial complex(0.24).

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate port use and the distribution of risk factors in 15 major ports in Korea, delineating the risk of each port after classifying the ports into four risk groups based on estimated risks. The placement of response vessels is then analyzed accordingly. Based on the results, danger was estimated to be especially high in ports where large-scale petrochemical facilities are located, such as Yeosu Gwangyang ports (1.85), Ulsan port (1.33) and Daesan port (1.25). The ports showing the next highest degree of danger were Pusan (0.95) and Incheon (0.83), which have significant vessel traffic, followed by Mokpo (0.71) and Jeju (0.49), which expanded their port facilities recently and saw an increase in large vessel traffic. Next is Masan (0.44), for which many fishing permits in the vicinity. When the relative ratios of each port were graded based on the Yeosu Gwangyang Ports, which showed the highest risk values, and risk groups were classified into four levels, the highest risk groups were Yeosu Gwangyang, Ulsan, Daesan and Pusan, with Incheon, Mokpo, Jeju, and Masan following. Pyeongtaek Dangjin, Pohang, Gunsan, and Donghae Mukho were in the mid-range danger group, and the low risk groups were Samcheonpo, Okgye, and Changsungpo. Among these, all response vessel placement ports specified by current law were above the mid-range risk groups. However, we can see that ports newly included in mid-range risk group, such as Mokpo, Jeju, and Donghae Mukho, were excluded from the pollution response vessel placement system. Therefore, to prepare for marine pollution accidents these three ports should be designated as additional response vessel placement ports.
