  • Genomic DNA isolated from two geographical ark shell (Scapharca subcrenata) populations was amplified several times by PCR reactions. The ark shell population from Daecheon (ASPD) and from Wonsan (ASPW) in the West Sea and the East Sea of Korean Peninsula, respectively, obtained. The seven arbitrarily selected primers OPA-05, OPA-11, OPB-09, OPB-11, OPB-14, OPC-18 and OPD-07 were shown to generate the loci observed per primer, shared loci by each population, specific loci, unique shared loci to each population and shared loci by the two populations which could be clearly scored. Here, 862 loci were identified in the ASPD population, and 1,191 in the ASPW population: 137 specific loci (15.9%) in the Daecheon population and 84 (7.1%) in the Wonsan population. 407 shared loci by each population, with an average of 58.1 per primer, were observed in the ASPD population. 473 shared loci by each population, with an average of 67.6 per primer, were identified in the ASPW population. The numbers of specific loci in the ASPD and ASPW population were 137 and 84, respectively. Consequently, the average bandsharing value of individuals within the ASPW population was much higher than in the ASPD population. The bandsharing value between individuals' no. 08 and no. 13 was 0.628, which was the highest measured between the two geographical populations. The dendrogram obtained by the seven primers indicated three genetic clusters: cluster 1 (DAECHEON 01-DAECHEON 11), cluster 2 (WONSAN 12 and 14) and cluster 3 (WON SAN 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22). The genetic distance between the two geographical populations ranged from 0.043 to 0.499. Especially, individual no. 10 of Daecheon population was most distantly related to no. 14 of Wonsan population (genetic distance = 0.499).

  • The distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates in Daecheon stream, an urban stream of Busan, was investigated to analyze the community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates. The collection was performed monthly at five(A~E) sites divided into three parts, upper, middle and lower, of stream from January to November, 2004. In physicochemical analysis of environmental factors, water quality parameters such as BOD, COD, conductivity and ABS were relatively increased in sites B and C. Whereas sites A, D and E showed little variations with good water quality parameters. However, water quality parameters in all surveyed sites showed gradual decrease with time toward improvement of water quality. A total of 8,226 individuals including 4 phyla, 6 classes, 9 orders, 302 families and 44 species were identified from five sites. The most dominant group was insect(class Insecta), and order Ephemeroptera and Diptera among insect was the largest member in species(30.6%) and individuals(75.0%) of benthic macroinvertebrates, respectively. The primary dominant species were Gammarus sp. and Ephemera strigata in site A, whereas Chironomus sp. and Brenchiura sowerbyi were dominated commonly in the other sites. In community analysis of benthic macroinvertebrates of Daecheon stream diversity index showed relatively low values, whereas dominance index was significantly high. Diversity index was the highest in site A, whereas the dominance index was the highest in site B. However, diversity index showed gradual increase with time showing adverse mode in dominance index. From these results, it can be suggested that long-term ecological monitoring of benthic macroinvertebrate fauna is needed for sustainable management of Daecheon stream.

  • In order to investigate the generations of rip currents modulated with the tidal elevations at a mega-tidal beach at the West Sea coast, numerical simulations of rip currents over the topography of the Daecheon beach were performed by using a Boussinesq-type wave and current model, FUNWAVE. The mega-tidal coast includes rocky outcrops (i.e., reefs) lying over or under the water surface according to the tidal elevations in the offshore and nearshore bathymetry. The offshore topographically-controlled rip currents were well reproduced due to the alongshore non-uniformities transformed by the tide-modulated topography. This study addressed the generation types of rip currents to occur at the mega-tidal coast with the tide-modulated outcrops and reefs.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of urban sprawl and their ramifications, i.e. segmentation and hierarchization on the spatial structure as well as populational composition, focusing on Daecheon - Village and Daecheoncheon - Network in Busan, and to examine not only the solidarity between constituents transcending the segmented spaces but also the internal values operating inside through the Daecheoncheon - Network. Due to the large - scale housing development in the 1980s to 1990s, Daecheon - Village has been transformed from a rural village to a town. In this process, the original single space became segmented into Daecheon - Village and apartment complex. This spatial segmentation divided the populational composition into old natives and young immigrants. However, the Daecheoncheon - Network created by solidarity between the bodies of two localities enabled the residents to resolve the urgent issues of localities, recognizing their own space of living not as segmented and hierarchic but as the communal site of life and one village where they will live together. Daecheoncheon-Network was the movement and network to connect natives and immigrants transcending the segmented space and went so far as to make a motive to create one community with the value of 'symbiosis.'

  • Mineral composition and grain size analyses of the sandstone from the Early Jurassic Daedong Group distributed in Mungyeong, Daecheon, Kimpo and Yeoncheon areas were made for the study of provenances and depositional environments. The most of the analyses are obtained from Mungyeong area, with some preliminarly works from Daecheon, Kimpo and Yeoncheon areas. All sandstones from the study area are characterized by high content of quartz ranging from 59.8 to 87.2 percent of total constituents. Many of quartz which has rounded dust ring seems to come from aeolian sediments. Content of feldspar is very low except Daecheon area where it ranges from 1.8 to 10.0 percent. Sandstones from Mungyeong, Kimpo and Yeoncheon areas are classified as quartz and quartzose arenite/wacke, while those from Daecheon area are classified as quartzose and lithic arenite/wacke. According to the character of the sandstones, provenance could be quartzose sandstone and quartzite. Results of grain size analysis of C-M and sorting versus skewness suggest that depositional environment seems to be fluvial, while log-probability curve pattern lacustrine environment. It is hard to derive a definite conclusion of sedimentary environment by the grain size analysis.

  • The ichthyofauna and fish community were studied in Daecheon Stream from April to October 2012. During the survey period a total of 42 species belonging to 13 families were collected. Dominant species by number was Zacco platypus(32.3%) and Tridentiger brevispinis(12.8%). In biomass, the dominant species was Z. platypus(27.7%) and Chelon haematocheilus(11.9%). Also, eight Korean endemic fish species and one endangered species (Rhodeus pseudosericeus) were collected. In addition, two exotic species(Carassius cuvieri and Micropterus salmoides) and migration fish species(Anguila japonica) were observed. Based on the length-weight relationship of Z. platypus, the b value was 3.21~3.29, and the condition factor(K) was 0.89 on average with stable condition. According to similarity analysis, fish communities in Daecheon Stream were divided into three groups; the upper reaches near a reservoir(St. 1), the middle reaches (St. 2 to 4) and the lower reaches near a weir(St. 5). Dominant species at each group were Zacco koreanus(St. 1), Z. platypus(St. 2 to 4) and T. brevispinis(St. 5). This result suggested that artificial structures such as dam and a weir have a marked effect on the distribution of fish communities in Daecheon Stream.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the health effects of exposure to oil-contaminated water in G village near the area of Daecheon beach on which air force had test fired. Methods: Eighty residents consented and were divided into three groups; 33 residents(drinking well water and still living there), 23 residents(drinking well water but do not live there any more), and 24 residents(did not drink well water but live there now: control group). Data were collected from August to September, 2010 from the survey questionnaires, general health examination, specific functional test, and biological marker tests. Results: Current residents showed higher levels of body mass index, blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose that are related to adult diseases. 64 participants received specific test for cancer. Only one person had esophageal cancer. Perchloroethylene was not found in the Urine Samples. Current residents showed a higher level of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, an indicator of oxidative damage, and there was a statistically significant difference after correcting the confounding variables. Conclusion: We need education programs for managing the risk factors that are related to adult diseases in people who are now living in this village. We also need to expand further studies for investigating oxidative damage indicators.

  • In order to systematically and scientifically manage the organic and heavy metals against sediment at Daecheon Port, this study conducted particle composition, organic materials and heavy metals irradiation studies of sediments. Analysis of the grain size composition of sediments in the target study area showed the distribution characteristics of the mix of sand, silt and clay. That is, Station C (Stn. C) showed superior by fine-grained sediment, Station A and B (Stn. A and B) showed superior by coarse-grained sediment. The organic matter(COD, TOC, and IL) of Stn. C was appeared to be heavily polluted more than Stn. A and B. These data for the spatial properties in sediment showed that organic matter was related positively to the sediment silt-clay content. Also, in the case of heavy metals contamination in surface sediments, Stn. C was higher than Stn. A and B. Particularly, at the Stn. C, high organic matter concentration and C/N ratio value( >10) indicated that the sediment was composed highly of land-derived organic matter. From these results, it considered that the correlation analysis among to silt-clay, organic matter and heavy metal was found to have a good interrelationship.
