Background: Since 2010, Korea has maintained a DNA database of those convicted of or awaiting trial for certain crimes. There have been proposals to expand the list of crimes included in this database, or conversely, omit certain crimes if they are committed during protests. An understanding of the feelings of the public as we consider the ethical, legal, and social aspects of a DNA database and as revisions to laws are made is required. Methodology: Questions related to the DNA database were included in the nationally representative Korean Academic Multimode Open Survey (KAMOS) panel (June-August 2016). Results: Of 2,000 randomly selected panel members, 1,013 respondents participated in this survey, including 89.2% who supported the existence of a criminal DNA database. The current system of storing DNA profiles until a suspect's acquittal or a convict's death was supported by 79.5% of respondents. In addition, 70.8% of respondents agreed with the expansion of crime categories included in the criminal database. Many (93.4%) respondents favored genetic testing and data storage to determine the identity and cause of death for people who die of unnatural causes. Some differences in attitude related to social class were noted, with those who self-identified as members of the upper class more likely to support the database and its expansion to include additional crimes than those who self-identified as middle or lower class. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that Koreans generally support the criminal DNA database.

DNA typing is the typical technology in the forensic science and plays a significant role in the personal identification of victims and suspects. Short tandem repeat (STR) is the short tandemly repeated DNA sequence consisting of 2~7 bp DNA units in specific loci. It is disseminated across the human genome and represents polymorphism among individuals. Because polymorphism is a key feature of the application of DNA typing STR analysis, STR analysis becomes the standard technology in forensics. Therefore, the DNA database (DNA-DB) was first introduced with 4 essential STR markers for the application of forensic science; however, the number of STR markers was expanded from 4 to 13 and 13 to 20 later to counteract the continuously increased DNA profile and other needed situations. After applying expanded STR markers to the South Korean DNA-DB system, it positively affected to low copy number analysis that had a high possibility of partial DNA profiles, and especially contributed to the theft cases due to the high portion of touch DNA evidence in the theft case. Furthermore, STR marker expansion not only contributed to the resolution of cold cases but also increased kinship index indicating the potential for improved kinship test accuracy using extended STR markers. Collectively, the expansion of the STR locus was considered to be necessary to keep pace with the continuously increasing DNA profile, and to improve the data integrity of the DNA-DB.

Over five thousand higher fungal specimens were collected from 32 forest areas of Chungcheong and Gyeongsang province from 2012 to 2013. We obtained 513 strains and 3,120 ITS sequences. Mushrooms were first identified with macro- and micro-scopic characters, and their identification was confirmed on the basis of ITS sequences. Voucher specimens were designated for each species found in Korea. Construction of DNA barcoding Database is currently underway with sequences of 409 species. During the development of the database, some new species were recognized, along with several Korean new records. When the system has been completed, it will provide essential molecular information for metagenomic and phylogenetic researches for higher fungi.

DNA microarray data analysis is a new technology to investigate the expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously. Since DNA microarray data structures are various and complicative, the data are generally stored in databases for approaching to and controlling the data effectively. But we have some difficulties to analyze and control the data when the data are stored in the several database management systems or that the data are stored to the file format. The existing analysis tools for DNA microarray data have many difficult problems by complicated instructions, and dependency on data types and operating system. In this paper, we design and implement network-based analysis tool for obtaining to useful information from DNA microarray data. When we use this tool, we can analyze effectively DNA microarray data without special knowledge and education for data types and analytical methods.
Recent proteomic studies of protein domains require high-throughput and systematic approaches. Since most experiments using protein domains, the modules of protein-protein interactions, require gene cloning, the first experimental step should be retrieving DNA sequences of domain encoding regions from databases. For a large scale proteomic research, however, it is a laborious task to extract a large number of domain sequences manually from several inter-linked databases. We present a new methodology to retrieve DNA sequences of domain encoding regions through automatic database cross-referencing. To extract protein domain encoding regions, it traverses several inter-connected database with validation process. And we applied this method to retrieve all the EGF domain encoding DNA sequences of homo sapiens. This new algorithm was implemented using Python library PAMIE, which enables to cross-reference across distinct databases automatically.
The National BioResource Project of Japan is a governmental project to promote domestic/international research activities using biological resources. The project has 27 biological resources including three cereal resources. The core center and sub-center which historically collected the cereal resources were selected for each cereal program. These resources are categorized into several different types in the project; germplasm, genetic stocks, genome resources and database information. Contents of rice resources are wild species, local varieties in East and Southwest Asia & wild relatives, MNU-induced chemical mutant lines, marker tester lines, chromosome substitution lines and other experimental lines. Contents of wheat resources are wild strains, cultivated strains, experimental lines, rye wild and cultivated strains; EST clones and full-length cDNA clones. Contents of barley resources are cultivar and experimental lines, core collection, EST/cDNA clones, BAC clones, their filters and superpool DNA. Each resource is accessible from the online database to see the contents and information about the resources. Links to the genome information and genomic tools are also important function of each database. The major contents and some examples are presented here.
