To confirm a new evaluation tedhnique for biodegradability of biopolymer microsphers in vivo condition, magnetic microsphere sytem was adopted for tracing the microspheres injected and lodged in micr. Microsphers of poly(DL-lactic acid), poly(L-alctic acid) and poly(DL-lactide-coglycolide)(PLGA) were prepared by solvent-extraction method and their organ distribution and biodegradation in mice was examined. Magnetic microspheres lodged in mice organs were recollected from the homogenates of mice organs with a constant flow magnetic separation apparatus. Recollected microspheres were observed by scanning electron microscopy and also were assayed for their magnetite ocntent by atomic absorption spectrophotometry to evaluate the biodegradability of polymeric microspheres. This method seems to be practical and simple to estimate the biodegradability of biopolymers over the conventional methods.
This is a cross-sectional study to evaluate the serum lipid levels of children living in Pusan in 1996. The distribution of age is from 2 years old to 12 years old. In female children mean total cholesterol is $171.4{\pm}26.2mg/dl$, triglyceride is $104.7{\pm}50.6mg/dl$, HDL-cholesterol is $54.4{\pm}14.8mg/dl$, and LDL-cholesterol is $95.4{\pm}32.9mg/dl$. In male children mean total cholesterol is $167.9{\pm}25.2mg/dl$, triglyceride is $6{\pm}45.5mg/dl$, HDL-cholesterol is $55.4{\pm}11.7mg/dl$, and LDL-cholesterol is $94.4{\pm}23.6mg/dl$. The percentile of serum lipid levels is measured in children. The 95th percentile of serum total cholesterol is 210mg/d1 in male children, and 214mg/d1 in female children. And, the 95th percentile of serum triglyceride is 184mg/d1 in male children, and 191mg/d1 in female children. And, the 95th percentile of LDL-cholesterol is 133mg/d1 in male children, and 135mg/d1 in female children. Serum total cholesterol is positively .Elated to age(r=0.18), height(r=0.08), weight (r=0.17), obesity index(r=0.12), and negatively .elated to father's education level (r=-0.13), mother's education level(r=-0.13). Serum triglyceride is positively related to weight(r=0.23), age(r=0.31) and negatively .elated to father's education level(r=-0.12), mother's education level(r=-0.18). Serum HDL-C was positively reated to mother's education level(r=0.07) and negatively .elated to height(r=-0.12), weight(r=-0.09). Conclusively, the serum lipid levels of children living in Pusan is generally so high that the family and school must try to control the serum lipid levels.
Two feeding trials were conducted to assess the relative bioavailability (RBV) of methionine hydroxy analogue calcium salt (MHA-Ca) in comparison to DL-methionine (DL-Met). Male Ross 308 (1-38 days) and Cobb 500 chickens (1-42 days) were used in studies 1 and 2, respectively. Experimental diets based on wheat and soybean meal or sorghum and soybean meal were fed during three phases. In both experiments graded levels of DL-Met and MHA-Ca were supplemented to Met+Cys deficient basal diets. Additionally, in experiment 1, increasing levels of a DL-Met preparation diluted with corn starch to 65% purity (DL-Met65) were supplemented. Birds were kept in floor pens and feed and water were available ad libitum. Body weights and feed consumption were recorded at the beginning and end of the experimental periods and weight gain and feed efficacy were computed subsequently. At the end of the experiments, a number of birds were slaughtered for carcass evaluation (dressing percentage, breast meat yield). Dose response data were analysed by both ANOVA and nonlinear common plateau asymptotic regression. In both experiments birds responded significantly to increasing levels of either methionine source. However, RBV of MHA-Ca compared to DL-Met was markedly (in many cases significantly) below 84%, the value which would have been expected from MHA-Ca's chemical characteristics. Excluding some extremely low RBV figures of trial 2, RBV of MHA-Ca averaged to about 63% in relation to DL-Met. In addition, supplementation of DL-Met65 allowed confirmation of nonlinear common plateau asymptotic regression to be suitable to determine RBV.
The polymeric matrices coated with poly(DL-lactide) were prepared using chitosan derivatives such as chitosan, chitosan hydrochloride, and sulfonated chitosan for application of drug delivery systems. The drug release study using prednisolone as a model drug was performed in the hydrochloride solution at pH 1.2. The release rate of drug was decreased according to the increased content of matrices. The release rate of prednisolone according to the kinds of polymeric matrices coated were decreased in the order to chitosan, sulfonated chitosan, and chitosan hydrochloride. Drug release rate of polymeric matrices coated with poly(DL-lactide) was not only two times slower than noncoated one, but also the burst effect of initial period of drug release was decreased in comparison with noncoated one. From these results, it was expected that these formulations based on the chitosan derivative matrices coasted with poly(DL-lactide) were acceptable drug delivery devices for a sustained-release dosage form of drug.
Objectives: This study was carried out to establish the normal values of Serum Total Cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol by age and sex for healthy adult and the frequency of dyslipidemia as a risk factor of coronary atherosclerosis. Methods: Total cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol measured among 14,485 in general growing people (8,712 males and 5,773 females) aged 20 to 69 years and analyzed to use the auto-analyzer Hitach 7600 in enzyme method. Result: 1. The levels of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and atherogenic index were slightly positively correlated with age in both sexes. The mean values of serum lipid profiles were $190{\pm}32.9mg/dl$ in men and $181{\pm}32.8mg/dl$ in women for cholesterol, $50.1{\pm}11.4mg/dl$ in men and $54.5{\pm}12.0mg/dl$ in women for HDL-cholesterol, $3.9{\pm}1.0$ in men and $3.4{\pm}0.8$ in women for atherogenic index. 2. Mean values of total cholesterol and atherogenic index higher in men than in women at the age 20-40 years but significantly higher in women than in men at the age group 60 years.(p<0.001) 3. The frequency of hypercholesterolemia(${\geq}200mg/dl$) and low HDL-cholesterol(<35mg/dl) were increased with age in both sexs, significantly higher in women at the age group 60 years. The frequency of hypercholesterolemia(${\geq}200mg/dl$) and low HDL-cholesterol(<35mg/dl) in men and women was 37.5%, 25.3%, and 5.5%, 2.8%. Their requencies were higher in men than in women. Conclusion: Theses findings suggest that the mean concentrations of total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol in men and women vary with age. The frequency of hypercholesterolemia(${\geq}200mg/dl$) in men and women was about 31.4% and increased with age.
In Iri industrial area, Heavy metals in ait of the factories, 10 metal and 8 non-metal factories, were examined for ten months(from Feb. to Nov, 1991). The methals in blood, urin and hair of 232 employees who have worked in the factories were also examined at the same time The results are summarized as follows 1. Heavy metals Pb, Cd and Mn in the metal factories were 0.031mg/m$^{3}$, 0.0065mg/m$^{3}$, and 0. 035mg/m$^{3}$ respectively, but 0.017mg/m$^{3}$, 0.021mg/m$^{3}$ and 0.014mg/m$^{3}$ in non-metal factories. 2. Heavy metals such as Pb, Cd and Mn in blood from employees in the metal factories were measured : 22.36$\mu$g/dl, 0.27$\mu$g/dl and 1.26$\mu$g/dl respectively, The values in the non-metal factories were 19.84$\mu$g/dl, 0.21$\mu$g/dl and 1.24$\mu$g/dl. 3. Heavy metals such as Pb, Cd and Mn in hair from employees in the metal factories were measured 8.92mg/kg, 0.33mg/kg and 3.71mg/kg respectively, but 8.14mg/kg, 0.31mg/kg and 3.26 rng/kg in the non-metal factories.
The present investigation was undertaken to study whether tumor-associated macrophages of Daltons lymphoma (DL), a spontaneous transplantable T cell lymphoma can be activated to tumoricidal state by alcoholic extract of Tinospora cordifolia (ALTC). In vivo administration of ALTC (200 mg/kg body weight) in DL-bearing mice resulted in an enhanced RNI production and an augmented cytotoxic response of tumor-associated macrophages. Earlier we had reported that DL-bearing mice show a regression of thymus and an enlargement of spleen. In vivo administration of ALTC to DL-bearing hosts resulted in a decrease in the weight of spleen and counts of splenocytes along with an increase in the weight of thymus as compared to control DL-bearing mice. In vivo administration of ALTC in DL-bearing mice also resulted in an increase in the proliferation of splenocytes/thymocytes and BMC. The results of this study indicate that the ALTC upon in vivo administration in DL-bearing shows immuno-modulatory effects and thus may have clinical significance.
