To study the dispersion factors of silica sol prepared from fumed silica powder, we prepared silica sol under an aqueous system using a batch type bead mill. The dispersion properties of silica sol have a close relationship to dispersion factors such as pH, milling time and speed, the size and amount of zirconia beads, the solid content of fumed silica, and the shape and diameter of the milling impellers. Especially, the silica particles in silica sol were found to show dispersion stability on a pH value above 7, due to the electrostatic repulsion between the particles having a high zeta potential value. The shape and diameter of the impellers installed in the bead mill for the dispersion of fumed silica was very important in reducing the particle size of the aggregated silica. The median particle size ($D_{50}$) of silica sol obtained after milling was also optimized according to the variation of the size and amount of the zirconia beads that were used as the grinding medium, and according to the solid content of fumed silica. The dispersion properties of silica sol were investigated using zeta potential, turbiscan, particle size analyzer, and transmission electron microscopy.
Most factories deal with toxic or flammable chemicals in their industrial processes. These hazardous substances pose a risk of leakage due to accidents, such as fire and explosion. In the event of chemical release, massive casualties and property damage can result; hence, quantitative risk prediction and assessment are necessary. Several methods are available for evaluating chemical dispersion in the atmosphere, and most analyses are considered neutral in dispersion models and under far-field wind condition. The foregoing assumption renders a model valid only after a considerable time has elapsed from the moment chemicals are released or dispersed from a source. Hence, an initial dispersion model is required to assess risk quantitatively and predict the extent of damage because the most dangerous locations are those near a leak source. In this study, the dispersion model for initial consequence analysis was developed with three-dimensional unsteady advective diffusion equation. In this expression, instantaneous leakage is assumed as a puff, and wind velocity is considered as a coordinate transform in the solution. To minimize the buoyant force, ethane is used as leaked fuel, and two different diffusion coefficients are introduced. The calculated concentration field with a molecular diffusion coefficient shows a moving circular iso-line in the horizontal plane. The maximum concentration decreases as time progresses and distance increases. In the case of using a coefficient for turbulent diffusion, the dispersion along the wind velocity direction is enhanced, and an elliptic iso-contour line is found. The result yielded by a widely used commercial program, ALOHA, was compared with the end point of the lower explosion limit. In the future, we plan to build a more accurate and general initial risk assessment model by considering the turbulence diffusion and buoyancy effect on dispersion.

The finite element model based on the 2-D advection-dispersion equation incorporating the dispersion tensor that is calculated using velocity field data was developed in order to analyze more accurately 2-D mixing of pollutants for meandering streams. The proposed model was tested using the straight channel that inclined at 45o in the Cartesian coordinate system. The simulation results showed that dispersion tensor model using velocity field data gives an accurate solution. The suitability of the proposed model in analyzing actual pollutant mixing in meandering channels was demonstrated by comparing the simulation results with experimental data obtained from the tracer tests in the laboratory flume. Comparison results showed that the proposed model with dispersion tensor can represents more accurately the mixing phenomena of the pollutants in the meandering channels in which the direction of the primary flow is varying periodically along the channel.

In this paper a shrinkage estimator for the measure of dispersion of the inverse Gaussian distribution with known mean is proposed. Also we compare the relative bias and relative efficiency of the proposed estimator with respect to minimum variance unbiased estimator.
A new method is proposed for the analysis of optical properties of stationary transverse electirc (TE) nonlinear waves in the five-layer waveguide which consists of a linear guiding layer with two nonlinear bounding layers sandwiched between a semi-infinite clad and a substrate. By using the relation of the interface electric fields, we obtain the generalized form of nonlinear dispersion equations as an analytic and flexible form. In order to verify the dispersion equation, we apply the dispersion equation to the analysis of the symmetric five-layer waveguide. The nonlinear dispersion curves for several thicknesses of the nonlinear thin film is also presented.
Various Eulerian-Lagerangian numerical models for the one-dimensional longtudinal dispersion equation are studied comparatively. In the models studied, the transport equation is decoupled into two component parts by the operator-splitting approach ; one part governing advection and the other dispersion. The advection equation has been solved using the method of characteristics following flud particles along the characteristic line and the result are interpolated onto an Eulerian grid on which the dispersion equation is solved by Crank-Nicholson type finite difference method. In solving the advection equation, various interpolation schemes are tested. Among those, Hermite interpo;ation po;ynomials are superor to Lagrange interpolation polynomials in reducing both dissipation and dispersion errors.

Multivariate control charts for effectively monitoring every component in the dispersion matrix of multivariate normal process are considered. Through the numerical results, we noticed that the multivariate control charts based on sample statistic $V_i$ by Hotelling or $W_i$ by Alt do not work effectively when the correlation coefficient components in dispersion matrix are increased. We propose a combined procedure monitoring every component of dispersion matrix, which operates simultaneously both control charts, a chart controlling variance components and a chart controlling correlation coefficients. Our numerical results show that the proposed combined procedure is efficient for detecting changes in both variances and correlation coefficients of dispersion matrix.

The $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ algebraic stress model (KEASM) was applied to atmospheric dispersion simulation using the Lagrangian particle dispersion model and was compared with the most popular turbulence closure model in the field of atmospheric simulation, the Mellor-Yamada (MY) model. KEASM has been rarely applied to atmospheric simulation, but it includes the pressure redistribution effect of buoyancy due to heat and momentum fluxes. On the other hand, such effect is excluded from MY model. In the simulation study, the difference in the two turbulence models was reflected to both the turbulent velocity and the Lagrangian time scale. There was little difference in the vertical diffusion coefficient $\sigma$$_{z}$. However, the horizontal diffusion coefficient or calculated by KEASM was larger than that by MY model, coincided with the Pasquill-Gifford (PG) chart. The applicability of KEASM to atmospheric simulations was demonstrated by the simulations.s.

A new dispersion model for dense gas is constructed in the Lagrangian framework. Prediction of concentration by the proposed model is compared with measure data obtained in the experiment conducted in Thorney Island in 1984. Two major effects of dense gas dispersion, gravity slumping and stratification effect, are successfully incorporated into LDM (Lagrangian dense gas model). Entrainment effect is naturally modelled by introducing stochastic dispersion model with the effect of turbulence suppression by stratification. Not only various releasing conditions but also complex terrain can be extended to, although proposed model is appropriate for flat terrain.

The effects of (1) phonon dispersion on thermal conductivity model and (2) differentiation of group velocity and phase velocity are examined for germanium. The results show drastic change of thermal conductivity regardless of the same relaxation time model. Also the contribution of transverse acoustic (TA) phonon and longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon on the thermal conductivity at high temperatures is reassessed by considering more rigorous dispersion model. Holland model, which is commonly used for modeling thermal conductivity, underestimates the scattering rate for TA phonon at high frequency. This leads the conclusion that TA is dominant heat transfer mode at high temperatures. But according to the rigorous consideration of phonon dispersion, the reduction of thermal conductivity is much larger than the estimation of Holland model, thus the TA at high frequency is expected to be no more dominant heat transfer mode. Another heat transfer mechanism may exist at high temperatures. Two possible explanations we the roles of (1) Umklapp scattering of LA phonon at high frequency and (2) optical phonon.
