Guided Wave Calculation and Its Applications to NDE

  • This paper describes the calculation technique for guided wave propagation with a semi-analytical finite element method (SAFEM) and shows some results of numerical calculation and guided wave simulation for plates, pipes and railway rails. The SAFEM calculation gives dispersion curves and wave structures for bar-like structures. Dispersion curve software for a pipe is introduced, and also dispersion corves for a rail are given and experimentally verified. The mode conversions in a plate with a defect and in a pipe with an elbow or a defect are shown as examples of our guided wave simulations.

  • In this paper, The Influence of chromatic fiber dispersion on the transmission distance of MMW(millimeter-wave) link is analyzed and discussed. It is shown that dispersion significantly limits the transmission distance in intensity modulated direct detection and heterodyne links operating in the above 20㎓ frequency region by inducing a carrier to noise penalty on the transmitted signal. We analyze and discuss the influence of dispersion induced CNR(Carrier to Noise Ratio) penalty for direct detection and heterodyne method from simulation.

  • Water movements at nine different layers were observed from July 31 to August 2, 1976 at station H, which has water depth 42 meters and 3km far from the coast of Wolsong, and dispersion coefficients were computed from these current data, then relative magnitudes of dispersion coefficients were calculated at each layers. Relative magnitudes of dispersion coefficients based on the surface value are 62% at 5m layer, 24% at 10m layer, 20% at 15m and 20m layers, 17% at 25m layer, 24% at 30m layer, 28% at 35m layer and 15% at bottom layer, respectively.

  • In order for disperse dye based ink to be fitted with the critical requirements of ink jet printing, this study was undertaken to investigate the effects of 6 different dispersants on the milling efficiency of insoluble dye particles and dispersion stability of the final ink. It was found that a polystyrene dispersant with high molecular weight exerted relatively better dispersion stability which may be associated with its steric stabilization effect in the ink solution.

  • A centrifugal atomization process for uranium fuel was developed in order to fabricate high uranium density dispersion fuel for advanced research reactors. Spherical powders of $U_3Si$ and U-Mo were successfully fabricated and dispersed in aluminum matrices. Thermal and mechanical properties of dispersion fuel meat were characterized. Irradiation tests at the research reactor HANARO confirm the excellent performance of high uranium density dispersion fuel.

  • In this paper, a new scheme to calculate the weighting factor of the 2-D isotropic-dispersion finite difference time domain(ID-FDTD) is proposed. The weighting factor in [1] was formulated in free space, so that it may not be optimal in dielectric media. Therefore, the weighting factor was reformulated by considering the material properties and using the least mean square method. As a result, a minimum numerical dispersion error for any dielectric media is guaranteed.

  • In an earlier work, we proposed the chromatic dispersion monitoring technique of non-return to zero (NRZ) signal based on clock-frequency component (CFC) through numerical simulations. However, we have not yet shown any experimental demonstration or analytic derivation of it. In this paper, we show an experimental demonstration and analytic derivation of the proposed chromatic dispersion monitoring technique. We confirm that the experimental results and the analytic results correspond with the simulation results. We also demonstrate that monitoring range and accuracy can be improved by using a simple clock-extraction method.

  • The effects of several experimental parameters on the formation of stable Ni nanoparticles dispersion were investigated. The suspensions of Ni nanoparticles were produced in organic solvents using Hypermer KD-2 as a dispersant. The transmission profiles, particle size distribution, zeta potential, and visual inspection results were used to discuss the stability of the dispersion. The optimal conditions for the formation of stable dispersion are evaluated.

Improvement of System Performance Through Concentrated RDPS in WDM Transmission Links with Dispersion Management (분산 제어가 적용된 WDM 전송 링크에서 집중 RDPS를 통한 시스템 성능 개선)

  • System performance improvement through the concentrated residual dispersion per span (RDPS) in special transmission fiber spans in optical transmission links with dispersion management (DM) for wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) transmission is investigated through the comparison with the performance in optical transmission links with uniform RDPS in every fiber spans. It is confirmed that, in optical links with RDPS of 0 ps/nm uniformly distributed in the rest fiber spans, if RDPS of 300 ps/nm and 1,320 ps/nm are concentrated in 5th-13th fiber spans and 6th-13th fiber spans, respectively, then the best performance is obtained. It is also confirmed that optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) controlled by precompensation and postcompensation are 10 ps/nm and -10 ps/nm, respectively, in all two cases, and the effective launching power range below 1 dB eye opening penalty (EOP) in the concentrated RDPS of 300 ps/nm and 1,320 ps/nm are improved by 2 dB and 6 dB than optical transmission links with the uniformly distributed RDPS, respectively.

  • For the preparation of carbon-slurry fuel, the effects of process parameters on the carbon dispersion stability in the liquid fuel have been investigated. The dispersion stability of carbon-slurry fuels could be monitored by measurements of particle size and carbon contents in the different positions, and observation of dispersion states after centrifuging. Through the application of various additives, it was found that NB463S84 based on polyolefin succinimde showed the best dispersion and longest stability life of carbon-slurry fuel. Also, PIBSI (polyisobutenyl succimide) with the similar functional groups to NB463S84 was effectively synthesized and same dispersion stability was verified by application to carbon-slurry fuel. Finally, the possibility of practical use of carbon-slurry fuels was confirmed by application of the mixing conditions obtained from g scale to kg scale preparation.
