Objectives : This study was designed to investigate anti-obesity effects of DF in a ob/ob mouse model. Methods : Fifteen-week-old ob/ob mice were divided into four groups: a normal lean group given a standard diet, an ob/ob control group given a standard diet, and DF(1) and DF(2) groups given a standard diet with DF(1) (300 mg/kg), and DF(2) (600 mg/kg), respectively. After 10 weeks of treatment, body weight gain, feeding efficiency ratio, blood lipid markers, fat weight and histology were examined. Results : Body weight gain and fat mass were significantly decreased in DF(1) and DF(2) groups compared with control. The extent of decreases was eminent in DF(2) group. Feeding efficiency ratio were significantly decreased in DF(2) group compared with control. Consistent with their effects on body weight gain and fat mass, circulating concentrations of LDL, total cholesterol, free fatty acid, and insulin were decreased in DF(2) group compared with control. The size of adipocytes were significantly decreased by DF(2) compared with control. Consistent with their effects on body weight gain, hepatic lipid accumulation and liver weights were reduced in DF compared with control. Conclusions : In conclusion, these results suggest that DF not only decrease feeding efficiency ratio, and blood anti-obesity biomarkers, but also reduce fat mass, contributing to the improvement of obesity. DF also inhibits hepatic lipid accumulation.
Long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) are vital in cellular compartments, primarily regulating lipid metabolism. Fatty Acid-Binding Proteins (FABPs) facilitate LCFA transport, lipid synthesis, storage, and act as signaling molecules influencing various pathways, including inflammation. FABP4, in particular, is linked to vascular and cardio-related diseases, and it plays a role in macrophage-mediated inflammatory responses. Previous studies have identified FABP4 as not only a representative biomarker for lipogenesis but also as having correlations with immune responses. This study aims to investigate the regulation of the chicken FABP4 (chFABP4) gene by toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) activation and determine the signaling pathways that are involved in chFABP4 transcriptional regulation. We analyzed the transcriptional regulation of chFABP4 in TLR3-stimulated DF-1 cells. The results showed that chFABP4 was up-regulated upon stimulation with polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (PIC), a TLR3 ligand. Notably, chFABP4 transcription was independently regulated in the NF-κB signaling pathway. It was up-regulated in p38 inhibition, demonstrating that the p38 signaling pathway might suppress the transcription of chFABP4 within TLR3-activated DF-1 cells. In contrast, chFABP4 expression was down-regulated in JNK signaling pathway inhibition, suggesting the positive regulation of JNK signaling pathway for chFABP4 transcription in DF-1 cells in response to TLR3 activation, consistent with findings in macrophages. MEK pathway inhibition resulted in a similar regulation to NF-κB signaling. These results suggest that each MAPK contributes differentially to the transcriptional regulation of chFABP4 by in DF-1 cells in response to TLR3 activation.
Electrical conductivity (EC) is a major indicator of soil salinity. Measurement of EC in saturation-paste extract of soil (ECe) is a standard way to evaluate soil salinity. However, many of the data on soil salinity have been obtained by measuring the EC of 1:5 soil-water extract (EC1:5) or salt percentage which is calculated from EC1:5 by multiplying a conversion factor. We analyzed 90 soil samples collected from 9 reclaimed tidelands in Korea, and derived relationships between ECe and dilution factors (DF1:5) which can convert EC1:5 to ECe in 2 soil textural groups at 5 salinity levels. Regression equations between ECe and DF1:5 were DF1:5 = 1.3624In(ECe) + 5.1386($r^2=0.37^{***}$) for soils of more than 50% silt content, DF1:5 = 1.9505In(ECe) + 5.3679($r^2=0.66^{***}$) for soils of less than 50% silt content. And the relationship for all soils investigated was DF1:5 = 1.4001In(ECe) + 5.4865($r^2=0.51^{***}$). From the relationships, conversion factors for calculation of ECe from EC1:5 of salt percentage data were estimated for soils of different textures and salinity levels.
Dietary fiber(DF) intakes of Korean during 1969∼1990 were estimated and the major food sources of fiber were analyzed using the data from the Annual Reports of Korean National Nutrition Survey. The estimated daily DF intake of Korean has gradually decreased during the 22 years, from 24.46g in 1969 to 17.31g in 1990 with a remarkable decline in 1987. The average DF intakes of the rural population were higher than those fo urban's until 1980, but the situation was reversed until 1987 and the regional difference in DF consumption disappeared thereafter. Vegetables, cereals, grain and legumes were the major sources of fiber for Korean in recent 5 years(1986∼1990), providing 32%, 16% and 19% of DF intake respectively. Throughout the 22years, the intakes of DF from cereals and fresh vegetables have been reduced and those from processed vegetables, seaweeds and fruits has been increased. Df intake from legumes continuously increased until 1986, and it decreased thereafter. Rural population consumed more fiber from cereals than the urban's during the 1970s, but thereafter regional difference in cereal fiber intakes became insignificant. Urban population consumed more fiber from legumes and fruits than the rural's through the entire period. The results of this study indicate that the present DF intake of Korean is considerably lower than generally anticipated and is below the tentative recommended DF intake and thus higher DF intake than the present level is needed.

Methods : Eight-week-old C57BL/6N mice were divided into five groups: a normal lean group given a standard diet, an obese control group given a high fat diet, and atorvastatin, DF, and DF+GSH groups given a high fat diet with atorvastatin (10 mg/kg), DF (40 mg/kg), and DF+GSH (80 mg/kg), respectively. After 8 weeks of treatment, body weight gain, blood lipid markers, ALT concentrations, liver weight and histology were examined. Results : 1. Body weight gain was significantly decreased in DF, DF+GSH and atorvastatin groups compared with control. The extent of decreases was eminent in DF+GSH group. 2. Circulating concentrations of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were decreased in DF, DF+GSH and atorvastatin groups compared with control. The decreases were significant in DF+GSH and atorvastatin groups. 3. Liver weights were decreased in DF, DF+GSH and atorvastatin groups compared with control. In particular, liver weight was significantly reduced only in DF+GSH group. 4. Hepatic lipid accumulation was significantly decreased in DF, DF+GSH and atorvastatin groups compared with control, and the magnitude of which was more effective in DF+GSH group than in DF-only group. 5. Circulating ALT concentrations were decreased in DF, DF+GSH and atorvastatin compared with control, but ALS levels were significantly reduced only in DF+GSH group. Conclusions : In conclusion, these results suggest that DF decreases body weight gain, improves blood lipid metabolism, and reduces liver weight and hepatic lipid accumulation, contributing to the improvement of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In addition, these effects were more effective in DF+GSH combination group than in DF-only group.

In addition, these effects were similar between Pakistani and Chinese Ephedra herba-containing Gangjihwan.
The rate constants for the following vibration-to-vibration energy exchange reactions have been calculated theoretically for the temperature range from 300 to 800K and for n = 2 to 5. HF(v=n) + DF(v=0) ${\to}$ HF(v=n-l) + DF(v=l) + ${\Delta}E$(a) DF(v=n) + HF(v=0) ${\to}$ DF(v=n-l) + HF(v=l) + ${\Delta}E$(b) In calculation the loosely-held, non-rigid dimer collision model and semiclassical method have been employed. The results show that the rate constants for the processes (a) are much greater than those for the processes (b). Also, it is found that the rate constants for the processes (a) increase with decreasing temperature and with increasing quantum number, while those for the processes (b) show the opposite tendencies. These findings are explained in terms of the sign and magnitude of the energy mismatch, ${\Delta}E$.
Microorganism (strain DF 218) producing thermostable pretense was isolated from Korean soil and compost. It was Gram-positive, rod-shaped, aerobic, and spore-forming with yellowish white colony color, Temperature range for growth at pH 6.5 was $30-65^{\circ}C$, with optimum growth at $60^{\circ}C$. pH range for growth at $60^{\circ}C$ was 5-7 with optimum of 6.5, which indicates strain DF 218 to be thermophilic. The 16S rDNA sequence of strain DF 218 had 95% sequence similarity with that of Bacillus flexus. Based on physiological properties and phylogenetic analysis, we proposed the isolated strain as Bacillus sp. DF 218. Pretense was produced aerobically at $60^{\circ}C$ for 32 hr in a medium (pH 6.5) containing 1% each trypton, glucose, and NaCl. Its molecular weight was estimated as 61 kDa, with optimum temperature and pH of $60^{\circ}C$ and 7.5, respectively.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect of acupuncture and herbal medicine in patients who had hvpoactivity of the gastric vagus nerve and pyloric valve disturbance simultaneously with function dyspepsia by bowel sounds analysis. Methods : Bowel sounds of 10 patients (male 1, female 9) were recorded and their % of bowel sound (%BS) and ratio of dominant frequency (DF) were analyzed before and after treatment. Hypoactivity of the gastric vagus nerve was considered if % BS was <6%. and pyloric valve disturbance was accepted if DF ratio (e.g.. postprandial DF/fasting DF) was <1. Electroacupuncture at Zusanli (ST36, 3Hz, 30 minutes) and manual acupuncture at other meridian points were applied daily for 2 weeks. Herbal medicine, Pyengwi-san. was administered to all patients (100cc, 3 times/day). Results : DF ratio significantly increased from $0.93\pm0.06$ to $1.06\pm0.04$ after treatment for 2 weeks (p=0.005). 9 of 10 patients were improved to DF ratio>1. %BS also increased from $2.97\pm1.17%$ to $4.49\pm4.27%$. not significantly. 3 patients showed a remarkable elevation, and their %BS reached >6% of normal value. Conclusions : Combined effect of electroacupuncture at Zusanli (ST36), manual acupuncture. and Pyengwi-san was shown effective in the improvement of pyloric valve disturbance more than hypoactivity of gastric vagus nerve on patients with functional dyspepsia.

The purposes of this study were to determine the estimated dietary fiber (DF) intakes per capita/day of Korean as of 2001 by age groups and sex, and to analyze the major food sources of DF using the data on per capita consumption of each food reported in the 2001 Reports of Korean National Nutrition Survey and the newly-established DF database. The mean daily intakes of DF of Korean increased with increasing age until 49 years and thereafter decreased with aging. The intakes of DF/1,000 kcal increased with increasing age until 64 years and thereafter decreased with aging. On the average, the Korean people under age of 49 did not meet adequate intake (AI) of DF (12 g/1,000 kcal) in Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) for the Koreans. The male people less satisfied the AI than the female did. The major food groups contributed to DF intakes of Korean adults were high in the order of vegetables, cereals, fruits, seasonings, legumes and seaweeds. Regardless of age and sex, vegetables, cereals and fruits were three major sources of DF for Koreans who obtained approximately 75% of DF from those sources. It has been shown that rice was the first single food source of DF intake for the age groups less than 12 years, however Kimchi was the first major source for all the age groups over 12 years. The infant and elderly groups obtained more DF from 10 major single food sources than the other age groups did. The results of the study revealed that the present levels of DF intakes of Korean in all age groups except the elderly group are insufficient to meet the AI for DF. Therefore the beneficial effects of DF on health and the increased consumption of DF from the variety of food sources should be emphasized through the continuous nutritional education.
