Corrosion of metallic structures arises when an electric current flows from the metal into the electrolyte such as soil and water. The potential difference across the metal-electrolyte interface, the driving force for the corrosion current, can emerge due to a variety of temperature, pH, humidity and resistivity etc.. With respect to a given structure, a stray current is to be defined as a current flowing on a structure that is not part of the intended electrical circuit. Stray currents are caused by other cathodic protection installations, grounding systems and welding posts, referred to as steady state stray currents. But most often traction systems like railroads and tramlines are responsible for large dynamic stray currents. This type of stray current is generally results from the leakage of return currents from large DC traction systems that are grounded or have a bad earth-insulated return path. This paper investigates the reports, which is made for protecting the electrical corrosion by the DC traction stray current before the construction period.
In DC electric railway systems, the feeding currrnt is not permitted to flow backward in almost all the substations and the pantograph voltages at the regenerating cars rise extremely by the voltage drop of the resistance of the feeder line. In order to prevent the overrise of the pantograph voltage in power regenerating cars, the squeezing circuits for the regenerative current are equipped and this leads to double losses, which are an extra worn-out of the brake-shoes and an ineffective use of regenerative power. In this study, the insertion of resistors in the feeder line system is proposed as a possible method for the effective utilization of the regenerative power in the electric railways. Also it is investigated how the output voltages of substations affect the effective use of regenertive capability. The investigation results show that the energy savings and the reduction of the worn-out of the brake-shoe can be achieved at the same time by the insertion of resistors in the feeder line system.
Grounding fault and short of the DC power supply systems are detected and protected by high-speed circuit breaker, linked breaking device, ground relay and fault selective device, all of which are installed and operated in substaions. however, there have been many cases in which the protective devices did not detect grounding of of the over head catenary systems on concrete support for an extended period of time. Such cases often cause severe damages to the supports with high grounding resistances. If grounding accidents occur repetitively, the earth current and the rise of earth potential can damage not only passenger and staff but also electric facilities and equipment, necessitating high cost and endeavor to restore. The following study points out various problems that can be occurred occur as a result of high impedance grounding accident, and proposes a new system which can protect and intercept them.

The traction motors in electric multiple unit (EMU) trains are powered by AC-DC-AC converters, and the DC link voltage is generated by single phase PWM converters, with a fluctuation component under twice the frequency of the input catenary AC grid, which causes fluctuations in the motor torque and current. Traditionally, heavy and low-efficiency hardware LC resonant filters parallel in the DC side are adopted to reduce the ripple effect. In this paper, an analytical model of the ripple phenomenon is derived and analyzed in the frequency domain, and a ripple control scheme compensating the slip frequency of rotor vector control systems without a hardware filter is applied to reduce the torque and current ripple amplitude. Then a relatively simple discretization method is chosen to discretize the algorithm with a high discrete accuracy. Simulation and experimental results validate the proposed ripple control strategy.
DC railway systems have been adopted in the urban rail train. When EMU decelerates using electric breaking, regenerative power occurs. extra power is forcibly wasted by resisterIf DC transit system has inverter for reusing regenerative power, energy efficiency in DC transit system will be increased. in this paper present developed regenerative power inverter and its field test result.
In this paper, the details of electric traction voltages which are widely used for metro and mainline trains are presented. The problems encountered in catenaries, pressure of the pantograph pan, catenary contact cross sectional area, materials etc are well covered. Catenary height from the rail for main line, bridges, sheds etc is discussed. The catenary running details and switching of one catenary to another are explained. The dead zones in 3 phase grid as well as in DC are presented here. The pantograph structure, blades, shoes etc. for AC/DC EMUs are dealt. The schematic diagram for electrification systems used for railways are given and explained with typical electrical parameters of Indian Railways.
At the railway feeding system, a role of dead section is very important. Because, dead section is essential installation that AC feeding system meets DC feeding system or phase is changed between AC feeding systems. But, in dead section it is possible that an electric train meets interruption. In Korea, a study on the dead section isn't yet accomplished in depth. Accordingly. In this paper, when electric train is in dead-section power quality problem on electric train was dealt. Modeling and simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC was accomplished to analyze.
In this study, we propose a control algorithm to reduce the unbalanced characteristics of a three-phase system power caused by the unbalanced load of the AC electric railway. Then, we verify its performance through the design of a power compensator and experiments applying it. Like electric railway systems, a Scott transformer is applied, and the load and single-phase back-to-back converters are connected to the M-phase and T-phase outputs. The back-to-back converter monitors the difference in active power between the unbalanced loads in real-time and compensates for the power by using bidirectional characteristics. The active power is performed through PI control in the synchronous coordinate system, and DC link overall voltage and voltage balancing control are controlled jointly by M-phase and T-phase converters to improve the responsiveness of the system. To verify the performance of the proposed power compensation device, an experiment was performed under the condition that M-phase 5 kW and T-phase 1 kW unbalanced load. As a result of the experiment, the unbalance rate of the three-phase current after the operation of the power compensator decreases by 58.66% from 65.04% to 6.38%, and the excellent performance of the power compensator proposed in this study is verified.
This paper presents harmonic evaluation of an IAT(Intra Airport Transit) system in Incheon International Airport. It will be used electric vehicles with 80 kW per car that are produced Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, and one car is constructed with SIV(Static Inverter), VVVF(Variable Voltage and Variable Frequency) and two induction motor. The operated vehicles in the IAT system are rapidly changing DC load, and at a feeding substation, 3-phase electric power is transferred to DC 750 V by rectifier. Since, vehicles are also changing continuously, the voltages for the DC load fluctuate in the IAT system, and moreover, the fluctuating voltages generate high-order harmonics. This means that there is the difficulty in maintaining power quality in KEPCO systems' side. Therefore, the power quality of the IAT system in Incheon International Airport is evaluated using PSCAD/EMTDC simulator in the paper. The THD(Total Harmonic Distortion) of voltages and TDD(Total Demand Distortion) of currents, indices are calculated for the IAT system using the results of PSCAD/EMTDC dynamic simulation.
