  • DBS(Doppler Beam Sharpening) algorithm is a way to improve azimuth resolution performance in radar. Since DBS image includes the is information about the search area of radar, various clutter components exist besides the target to be detected. To detect and track the desired target in a DBS image, it must be able to identify a target and the clutter components. In this paper, we describe how to use image size and terrain information(DTED) to identify the target in a DBS image. By using morphological filter and chain code, it acquires image size and excludes the clutter components. By matching with DTED, we determine target.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate whether medication and deep brain stimulation (DBS) have differential effects on the speed and amplitude of bradykinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Five PD patients with implanted DBS electrodes (age: $60.6{\pm}7.4yrs$, H&Y stage: $3.1{\pm}0.2$) participated in this study. FT (finger tapping) movement was measured using a gyrosensor system in four treatment conditions: Med (Medication)-off/DBS-off, Med-off/DBS-on, Med-on/DBS-off and Med-on/DBS-on. Quantitative measures representing average speed and amplitude of FT movement included root-mean-squared (RMS) angular velocity and RMS angle. One-way repeated measures ANOVA showed that RMS angular velocity of Med-on/DBS-on was significantly greater than those of Med-off/DBS-off and Med-off/DBS-on (p < 0.01) whereas RMS angle was not different among conditions (p = 0.06). Two way repeated measures ANOVA showed that only medication improved RMS angular velocity (p < 0.01), whereas both medication and DBS had no significant effect on RMS angle (p > 0.02). Effect size of RMS angular velocity was greater than that of RMS angle in both medication and DBS. This suggests that medication and DBS have differential effects on FT bradykinesia and velocity and amplitude impairments may be associated with different functional aspects in PD.

  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is a novel therapy developed to treat Parkinson's disease. We report a patient who underwent bilateral DBS of the PPN and subthalamic nucleus (STN). He suffered from freezing of gait (FOG), bradykinesia, rigidity and mild tremors. The patient underwent bilateral DBS of the PPN and STN. We compared the benefits of PPN-DBS and STN-DBS using motor and gait subscores. The PPN-DBS provided modest improvements in the gait disorder and freezing episodes, while the STN-DBS failed to improve the dominant problems. This special case suggests that PPN-DBS may have a unique role in ameliorating the locomotor symptoms and has the potential to provide improvement in FOG.

  • In this paper, we have researched designing a microstrip antenna, which will be replaced for a parabolic antenna. A microstrip antenna has been used in extremely limited field, but if it is applied to practical life like a DBS receiving antenna, we expect that it will be used in various way. First of all, if we use a microstrip antenna for a DBS receiving antenna, it should be guaranteed characteristics of broadband frequency. Therefore, the goal of this paper is designing an antenna which guarantees broadband frequency band for a DBS reception. Also, experiment with Koreasat, we have researched the propriety of this antenna for the DBS receiving antenna.

  • We prepared blocking layers by adding 0.0 ~ 0.6 wt% nano diamond blends (DBs) to $TiO_2$ blocking layers to improve the energy conversion efficiencies (ECEs) of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). TEM and micro-Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the microstructure and phases of DBs, respectively. Optical microscopy and FE-SEM were used to analyze the microstructure of the $TiO_2$ blocking layer with DBs. UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy was used to determine the absorbance of the working electrodes. A solar simulator and a potentiostat were used to determine the photovoltaic properties and the impedance of the DSSCs with DBs. From the results of the DBs analysis, we determined a 6.97 nm combination of nano diamonds and graphite. We confirmed that ECE increased from 5.64 to 6.48 % when the added DBs increased from 0.0 to 0.2 wt%. This indicates that the effective surface area and electron mobility increased when DBs were added to the $TiO_2$ blocking layer. Our results indicate that the ECE of DSSCs can be enhanced by adding an appropriate amount of DBs to the $TiO_2$ blocking layers.

  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) has been found to be effective treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). This study aims to evaluate the effect of DBS for rigidity during DBS surgery. Six Parkinsonian patients who received STN-DBS surgery participated in this study. The examiner imposed flexion and extension of a patient's wrist randomly. Resistance to passive movement was quantified by viscoelastic properties (two damping constants for each of flexion and extension phase and one spring constant throughout both phases). All Viscoelastic constants decreased by DBS (p<0.01). Specifically, reduction in damping constant during flexion ($B_f$) was greater than those of damping constant during extension ($B_e$) and of spring constant (p<0.05). $B_f$ would be appropriate for evaluation of effect of DBS for rigidity during DBS surgery.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the counter ion binding constant (B) for the mixed micellizations of DBS (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate), SDS (sodium dodecylsulfate), and Brij 30 (polyoxyethylene(4) lauryl ether) at $25^{\circ}C$ in pure water were determined by the use of electric conductivity and surface tension measuring methods. Various thermodynamic parameters ($X_i,\;{\gamma}i,\;C_i,\;a_i^M,\;{\beta}$, and ${\Delta}H_{mix}$) were calculated and compared with each other mixed surfactant system by means of the equations derived from the nonideal mixed micellar model. The results show that the SDS molecule interacts more strongly with Brij 30 molecule than DBS molecule and that the SDS/Brij 30 mixed surfactant system has the greatest negative deviation from the ideal mixed micellar model and the SDS/DBS mixed system has followed almost the ideal mixed micellar model.

  • Objective : Neuropathic pain causes patients feel indescribable pain. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is one of the treatment methods in neuropathic pain but the action mechanism is still unclear. To study the effect and mechanism of analgesic effects from DBS in neuropathic pain and to enhance the analgesic effect of DBS, we stimulated the ventral posterolateral nucleus (VPL) in rats. Methods : To observe the effect from VPL stimulation, we established 3 groups : normal group (Normal group), neuropathic pain group (Pain group) and neuropathic pain+DBS group (DBS group). Rats in DBS group subjected to electrical stimulation and the target is VPL. Results : We observed the behavioral changes by DBS in VPL (VPL-DBS) on neuropathic pain rats. In our study, the pain score which is by conventional test method was effectively decreased. In specific, the time of showing withdrawal response from painful stimulation which is not used measuring method in our animal model was also decreased by DBS. Conclusion : The VPL is an effective target on pain modulation. Specifically we could demonstrate changes of pain response duration which is not used, and it was also significantly meaningful. We thought that this study would be helpful in understanding the relation between VPL-DBS and neuropathic pain.

Various thermodynamic parameters (Xi, $\gamma$i, Ci, aiM, $\beta$, and ${\Delta}H_{mix}$) were calculated and compared for each mixed surfactant system by means of the equations derived from the nonideal mixed micellar model. There sults show that the molecules of DBS interact more strongly with Brij 35 than Brij 30 and that the DBS/Brij35 mixed system has greater negative deviation from the ideal mixed micellar model than the DBS/Brij 30mixed system.
