Surface treatment of sol-gel bioglass is required to increase its biomedical applications. In this study, a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment in atmospheric pressure was performed on the surface of [$SiO_2-CaO-P_2O_5-B_2O_3$] sol-gel derived glass. The obtained bioglass was treated by plasma using discharge current 12 mA with an exposure period for 30 min. The type of discharge can be characterized by measuring the discharge current and applied potential waveform and the power dissipation. Apatite formation on the surface of the DBD-treated and untreated samples after soaking in simulated body fluid (SBF) at $37^{\circ}C$ is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). We observed a marked increase in the amount of apatite deposited on the surface of the treated plasma samples than those of the untreated ones, indicating that DBD plasma treatment is an efficient method and capable of modifying the surface of glass beside effectively transforming it into highly bioactive materials.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop a new sterilization plasma device that would be proficient at sterilizing and removing pathogenic bacteria and viruses, and applicable to air purification systems. Methods: In order to understand the performance characteristics, the discharge characteristics of a packed bed DBD reactor and the ozone reduction characteristics of an ozone filter installed at the outlet of the reactor were investigated. Results: The novel packed-bed DBD reactor was proposed, and it was confirmed that the plasma discharge was uniformly and stably discharged throughout the entire layer, and sufficient ozone was generated for sterilization. The ozone filter was tested for three methods: adsorption, adsorption-decomposition, and catalytic decomposition. When the filter thickness was 30 mm, the ozone concentrations were 0.03 ppm, 0.01 ppm, and 0.21 ppm, respectively. The adsorption and adsorption-decomposition methods satisfied the EPA standard of less than 0.05ppm, but the catalytic decomposition method did not. Conclusions: It was confirmed that the adsorption-decomposition method has relatively excellent ozone filter performance and can provide the best ozone filter.

This study was conducted to explore the potential for use of atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge plasma (atmospheric pressure DBD plasma) as a non-thermal sterilization technology for microorganisms in dried red pepper. The effects of key parameters such as power, exposure time and distance on the sterilization efficiency and the quality of red dried pepper by the atmospheric pressure DBD plasma treatment were investigated. The results revealed that the plasma treatment was very effective for sterilization of Staphylococcus aureus, with 15 min of treatment at 1.0 kW and 20 mm sterilizing 82.6% of the S. aureus. Increasing the power or exposure time and decreasing the exposure distance led to improved sterilization efficiency. The atmospheric pressure DBD plasma treatment showed no effect on the ASTA (American spice trade association) value or hardness of dried red pepper. Furthermore, no effects of atmospheric pressure DBD plasma treatment were observed on the sensory properties of dried red pepper. To assess the storage stability, the dried red pepper was treated with atmospheric pressure DBD plasma (1.5 kW power, 15 min exposure time and 10 mm exposure distance), then stored for 12 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the ASTA value, hardness and capsaicin concentration of dried red pepper were maintained.
Plasma ozone is utilized in a variety of applications in the field of sterilization due to its high sterilization performance. Dielectric materials used in DBD(dielectric barrier discharges) are mainly polymer, quartz and ceramics. These dielectric layers have the advantage of limiting the amount of supplied electron charge and allowing plasma to occur evenly on the surface of dielectric. Actually, the target or environment for sterilization is often a complex structure, so research and academic study are needed by utilizing the concept of space sterilization. In this study, the device is applied to generate DBD plasma at atmospheric pressure for disinfection due to the effectiveness in producing radicals and ozone. The generator of plasma ozone is a basic structure of dielectric barrier discharge by placing ceramic tube dielectrics and stainless steel electrical conductors at regular intervals. Various applications can be developed based on the proposed design method. Plasma ozone generation for space sterilization device is recognized as an excellent sterilization device. Through the design and verification of the device, we intend to establish an optimal design of the spatial sterilization device and provide the basis data for sterilization applications.
The adhesion strength of metal plating on PC was studied. In this study, surface was treated by chemical agents or DBD(dielectric barrier discharge) plasma to imporve the adhesion. The surface roughness, contact angle, gloss of plating and adhesive strength were measured. Adhesion strengths of Ni plating on prepared PC by NaOH and KOH solution were $12.3kgf/cm^2$ and $7.5kgf/cm^2$, respectively. The highest adhesion strength was obtained in the plasma treated one, $27.8kgf/cm^2$.

A combined process of non-thermal plasma and catalytic techniques has been investigated to treat toxic gas compounds in air. The treated gas in the present study is $CH_3$CN that has been known to be a simulant of toxic chemical agent. A planar type dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) reactor has been used to generate non-thermal plasma that produces various chemically active species, O, N, OH, $O_3$, ion, electrons, etc. Several different types of adsorbents and catalysts, which are MS 5A, MS 13X, Pt/alumina, are packed into the plasma reactor, and have been tested to save power consumption and to treat by-products. Various aspects of the present techniques, which are decomposition efficiencies along with the power consumption, by-product analysis, reaction pathways modified by the adsorbents and catalysts, have been discussed in the present study.
We have grown, for the first time to our knowledge, N-doped ZnO thin films on sapphire substrate by employing novel dielectric barrier discharge in pulsed laser deposition (DBD-PLD). DBD guarantees an effective way for massive in-situ generation of N-plasma under the conventional PLD process condition. Low-temperature photoluminescence spectra of the N-doped ZnO film provided near band-edge emission after thermal annealing process. The emission peak was resolved by Gaussian fitting to find a dominant acceptor-bound exciton peak ($A^0X$) that indicates the successful p-type doping of ZnO with N.
