  • The BER performance and the capacity variation of a microcell due to power control error(PCE) is analyzed on service types(data and voice, respectively) for the reverse link of an overlaid cell CDMA system. The procedure of analysis is followed as: First, we calculate BER performance according to PCE. Next, we find the minimum SNR for voice service, BER=TEX>$10^{-3}$, and data service, BER=TEX>$10^{-5}$. Then, according to the calculated SNR, we find the maximum capacity of a microcell and macrocell and the capacity of a microcell where interference is considered is found and analyzed with that in perfect power control. We get to the results as follows. The BER performance in 1 dB PCE is similar to that in perfect power control, however, with a increase in PCE, the BER performance is largely degraded. In terms of capacity, it is shown that if the PCE is equal or less than 2 dB, the effect of the PCE on voice service is more than that on data service, but if the PCE is equal or more than 3 dB, effect of the PCE on data service is more than that on voice. Besides, if the PCE is equal or less than 2 dB, both PCE and interference should be considered to calculate the capacity of a microcell, but if the PCE is equal or more than 3 dB, interference can be negligible since the effect of PCE is much stronger than that of interference. Therefore, the microcell should be located where $R_d$, the ratio of a microcell to a macrocell radius, is equal to 0.1, and d, the ratio of the distance between a microcell and a macrocell to the macrocell radius, is equal or more than 0.5, in order to obtain a appropriate microcell capacity against interference. If $\sigma$ is adjusted to less than 2 dB, we may get equal or more than 70% of the maximum microcell capacity.

  • In this paper, we present the design, fabrication and measurement of high efficiency GaN HEMT power amplifier using harmonic matching technique. In order to achieve high efficiency, harmonic load-pull simulation is performed, that is, the optimum load impedances are determined at $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ harmonic frequencies as well as at the fundamental. Then, the output matching circuit is designed based on harmonic load-pull simulation. The measurement of the fabricated power amplifier shows the linear gain of 20 dB and $P_{1dB}$(1 dB gain compression point) of 33.7 dBm at 1.85 GHz. The maximum power added efficiency(PAE) of 80.9 % is achieved at the output power of 38.6 dBm, which belongs to best efficiency performance among the reported high efficiency power amplifiers. For W-CDMA input signal, the power amplifier shows a PAE of 27.8 % at the average output power of 28.4 dBm, where an ACLR (Adjacent Channel Leakage Ratio) is measured to be -38.8 dBc. Digital predistortion using polynomial fitting was implemented to linearize the power amplifiers, which allowed about 6.2 dB improvement of an ACLR performance.

  • The cell search scheme for W-CDMA consists of the following three stages: slot synchronization(1st stage), group identification and frame boundary detection(2nd stage), and long code identification(3rd stage). The performance of the cell search when a mobile station is switched on, which is referred to as initial cell search, is decreased by the initial frequency and timing error. In this paper, we propose the pipeline structured initial cell search scheme using time trackers to compensate for the impact of the initial timing error in the stage 2 and stage 3. The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed scheme is maximal 1.5dB better than that of the conventional one when the initial timing error is near ${\pm}T_c$/2.

  • In this paper, a broadband MIMO antenna using the metal cover that is one of the antenna radiators is designed and implemented on the PCB. The proposed antenna consists of a monopole and an IFA fed by the coupling structure and a metal cover radiator. Therefore, a monopole and an IFA with a metal cover radiator operate simultaneously through a hybrid form of operation. The antenna satisfies VSWR 3:1 at the bands of LTE class 13, class 14, CDMA, GSM900, DCS, PCS, WCDMA, LTE class 40 and WiFi. The maximum ECC of diagonally fed MIMO antenna is 0.186. The measured average gain and efficiency were -5.14~-1.28 dBi and 30.87~74.48 % over the desire bands, respectively.

  • In this paper, a new type predistorter using a low frequency intermodulation signals terms of harmonic generator is proposed. A vector modulator, in which fundamental signal is modulated with low frequency intermodulation signals derived from harmonic generator, generates predistorted third and fifth IM components. Using predistorted signals, intermodulation distortion signals of power amplifier suppressed. The suggested predistorter has been manufactured to operate in Korean PCS base-station transmitting band (1840~1870MHz). The test results show that the third IMD signal level is reduced more than 20dB and the fifth IMD signal is reduced about 10dB for CW two-tone signals. The predistorter improves the Adjacent Channel Power Ratio (ACPR) more than 10dB for CDMA (IS-95) signals.

  • In this paper, we propose an electrically tilting system based on a null-steering in order to solve the problem of the shadowing loss caused by the mechanically tilted antenna system in mobile services. Especially, we improve the downward shadowing loss by eliminating or moving the vertical beampattern nulls between $-30^{\circ}{\sim}0^{\circ}$ to be able to tilt the downward beampattern between $-10^{\circ}{\sim}0^{\circ}$. The antenna has 14.5 dBi gain and side lobe level (SLL) is lower than -18 dB within downward tilting range. The isolation of polarization is greater than 30 dB when running in electric tilt down to $-10^{\circ}$. To verify this paper, we made the base-station antenna for W-CDMA and beam tilting devices, and verified the performances.

  • A linear stacked field-effect transistor (FET) power amplifier (PA) is implemented using a $0.18-{\mu}m$ silicon-on-insulator CMOS process for W-CDMA handset applications. Phase distortion by the nonlinear gate-source capacitance ($C_{gs}$) of the common-source transistor, which is one of the major nonlinear sources for intermodulation distortion, is compensated by employing a PMOS linearizer with improved AM-PM. The linearizer is used at the gate of the driver-stage instead of main-stage transistor, thereby avoiding excessive capacitance loading while compensating the AM-PM distortions of both stages. The fabricated 836.5 MHz linear PA module shows an adjacent channel leakage ratio better than -40 dBc up to the rated linear output power of 27.1 dBm, and power-added efficiency of 45.6% at 27.1 dBm without digital pre-distortion.

  • Even if ICS(Interference Cancellation System) repeater is used in wireless communication system, it has the disadvantage that it must have enough distance between Donor and Service antenna to be isolated. In this paper, new ICS repeater integrated antenna with high insolation characteristics is designed. The proposed antenna is fabricated for 800MHz and measured. Bandwidth and gain are optimized by changing the stub lengths near main patch and power divider, and also by changing the size of parasitic patch. The fabricated antenna has a return loss less than -13 dB, a gain over 3 dBi, and an isolation between the donor and the server antennas less than -56 dB from 824~894 MHz for CDMA mobile communication. Therefore, the proposed antenna structure can be applied to eliminate the shadow area and to expand the coverage area for any other wireless communication bands.

  • Wireless LANs in the 2.4 ㎓ ISM- band create a new Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) problem. We investigated the interference characteristics between such wireless LANs in the case of identical systems, systems with different technical parameters for modulation and demodulation, and using a Gaussian noise source as a disturbance source. Experimental results show that higher throughput is obtained when adjacent wireless LANs use different systems, and that interference characteristics can be evaluated experimentally using a Gaussian noise source. Calculated BER characteristics for the interference agree with experimental measurements, indicating that this calculation method can be used for the design of the wireless LAN network to avoid interference. It is possible to construct an efficient wireless LAN network by combining different wireless LAN systems.

  • This paper describes the design of a FEM(Front End Module) having power detection function for mobile handset application. The designed FEM consists of a MMIC(Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits) power amplifier chip, SAW Tx filter and duplexer, diode power detector and stripline matching circuit. An LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics) technology is adopted for miniaturized FEM. The frequency band is $824{\sim}869$ MHz which is the uplink Tx band of the CDMA mobile system. The size of designed FEM is $7.0{\times}5.5{\times}1.5\;mm^3$, which is an ultra-small size even though the power detector circuit is included. All sub-components of FEM have been developed and measured in advance before being integrated into FEM. The measured output power and gain are 27 dBm and 27 dB, respectively. In addition, the measured ACPR characteristics are 46.59 dBc and 55.5 dBc at 885 kHz and 1.98 MHz offset, respectively.
