  • Structural larger timber have some weak points as like much longer drying time at lower MC(15%), a considerable check developing and the difficulty for the chemicals injection, so it is necessary to develop lighter structural size member for using the new Hanok, heavy timber construction, living necessaries, furniture and industrial goods. The developed skin timber can be a good raw material for those uses. Skin timber is a hollowed timber which be bored out of its considerable cross-sectional area. The intention of this study was the evaluation of compressive capacity of skin timber. Specially, skin timbers which have more than 200mm in sizes were used to analyze the compressive capacity. From the results of this study, the following conclusions have been made: 1. Though considerable inner parts were bored out, both pine skin timber and larch skin timber showed a good compressive capacity to that of non-bored solid timber. 2. According to ASTM, pine skin timber showed various failure types, but Splitting type, Brooming and end rolling type were main failure types for the larch skin timber. 3. Pine skin timber didn't show the significance between cylindrical shape and rectangular shape, but larch skin timber showed the significance between two shapes. Therefore, for the larch skin timber, cylindrical shape and rectangular shape should be used as a column uses and beam uses respectively. 4. Pine skin timber and larch skin timber didn't show the significance on the compressive capacity. There is not much difference of compressive capacity between them, so it can be possible to select on the user convenience.

  • Cylindrical worm reducers are generally used in various fields and forms throughout the industry, and demand is increasing due to their role as an integral part of the industry. Market trends require high-load, high-precision components, and small-sized reducers with large loads. When using a cylindrical worm reducer, a reducer designed with a reduced center distance while maintaining the same output torque results in gear wear. To overcome this difficulty, an enveloping worm gear reducer is introduced and studied. In this paper, three types of end mill tools are used to evaluate the tooth profile accuracy for each tool shape during machining of the tooth profile for a non-developed surface worm thread. The effect of the endmill shape on the accuracy of the tooth profile was analyzed by performing 3D modeling of the surrounding worm tooth profile based on the Hindley method. In this study, we analyzed tooth profile accuracy, tooth surface roughness, and tooth surface machining time, etc. Through the study, efficient machining conditions for the enveloping worm gears and the influence of parameters on the process were presented.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to measure the insertion torque of orthodontic miniscrews regarding changes in their shape, diameter, and length. Methods: Torque values were measured during continuous insertion of the miniscrews into solid rigid polyurethane foam, using a torque tester of driving motor type with a regular speed of 3 rpm. Orthodontic miniscrews (Biomaterials Korea, Seoul, Korea) of cylindrical type and taper type were used. Results: Increasing the length and diameter of the miniscrews increased the maximum insertion torque value in both cylindrical and taper type screws. Insertion torque was increased at the incomplete head of the cylindrical type screw, and at the tapered part of the taper type screw. The insertion torque value of miniscrews was influenced most by diameter, then shape and length. As a result, it was shown that the diameter of the screw had the most influence on insertion torque, and the taper type screw had a higher torque value than the cylindrical type screw. Conclusion: Therefore, a large diameter or taper type screw are adequate for areas of thin cortical bone with a large interdental space, and a small diameter or cylindrical type screw are adequate in the mandibular molar area or the midpalatal area having thick cortical bone.

  • Control of vibrations against extraordinary excitations such as wind and earthquake is very important to the protection of life and financial concerns. One of the methods of structural control is to use Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD), however due to the nature of TLD only one sloshing frequency can be created when the water is sloshing. Among various ideas proposed to compensate this problem, by changing the angle of some rotatable baffles embedded inside a TLD, a frequency range is created such that these baffles are tuned manually at different frequencies. In this study, the effect of cross sectional shape of container with rotating baffles on seismic behavior of TLD is experimentally studied. For this purpose, rectangular and cylindrical containers are designed and used to suppress the vibrations of a Single Degree-Of-Freedom (SDOF) structure under harmonic and earthquake excitations considering three baffle angles. The results show that the rectangular-shaped damper reduces the structural response in all load cases more than the damper with a cylindrical shape, such that maximum differences of two dampers to reduce the structural displacement and structural acceleration are 5.5% and 3% respectively, when compared to the cases where no baffles are employed.

  • Various core shapes of cylindrical drains are used for accelerating primary consolidation for soft clay deposits, but serious harmful disadvantages on drainage capacity may occur on cylindrical drains due to confining Pressure when they are installed in that soil. In this study, two different core shapes of cylindrical drain are used to evaluate the drainage capacity with consideration of clogging effects on their filter jackets for an applied confining pressure. Column tests with radial drainage system were conducted under confining pressure of 50 kPa for 13 days. Two parameters which are discharge and accumulated volume of water drained were measured as the time elapsing. From this experimental study, the results showed that at the Initial stage before the clogging developed enough, the cylindrical drain with angular-type-plastic-core could produce discharge twice higher (maximum) than those with round-type. After 13 days had passed on, cylindrical drain with angular-type-plastic-core could produce discharge only 20% higher than those with round-type one. Eventually, there is a possibility that the efficiency of using angular-type-cylindrical-drain will be similar to the round-type one as the clogging develops more.

  • A stability problems of isotropic shells under pure bending is investigated based on the classical shells theory. The governing equations of stability problem presented by Donnell and Love, are developed and the solutions for the cylindrical shells are obtained by using Galerkin method. Bending moment is applied at the ends of the cylindrical shell as a from of distributed load in the shape of sine curve. For the isotropic materials, the result of the general purpose structural analysis program based on the finite element method are compared with the critical moment obtained from the classical shell theories. The critical loads for the cylindrical shells with various geometry can not be evaluated with a simple equation. However, accurate solutions for the stability problems of cylindrical shells can be obtained through the equilibrium equation developed in the study.

  • In this paper, the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method is developed for dynamic analysis of non-symmetric nanocomposite cylindrical shell equations of elastic wave motion with nonlinear grading patterns under shock loading. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposite cylinder are obtained based on a micro-mechanical model. In this study, four kinds of grading patterns are assumed for carbon nanotube mechanical properties. The displacements can be approximated using shape function so, the multiquadrics (MQ) Radial Basis Functions (RBF) are used as the shape function. In order to discretize the derived equations in time domains, the Newmark time approximation scheme with suitable time step is used. To demonstrate the accuracy of the present method for dynamic analysis, at the first a problem verifies with analytical solution and then the present method compares with the finite element method (FEM), finally, the present method verifies by using the element free Galerkin (EFG) method. The comparison shows the high capacity and accuracy of the present method in the dynamic analysis of cylindrical shells. The capability of the present method to dynamic analysis of non-symmetric nanocomposite cylindrical shell is demonstrated by dynamic analysis of the cylinder with different kinds of grading patterns and angle of nanocomposite reinforcements. The present method shows high accuracy, efficiency and capability to dynamic analysis of non-symmetric nanocomposite cylindrical shell, which it furnishes a ground for a more flexible design.
